Yesterday, May 31, marked the cutoff point for eligibility in the 2007 Emmy race, and that means today I can begin ranting about how it’s a matter of vital national importance that Ugly Betty’s Vanessa (L. Yeah) Williams (pictured) and Battlestar Galactica’s Michael Hogan score nominations come July 19.
As you may recall, I was "hellaciously upset" when the Golden Globes snubbed L. Yeah for a supporting actress nod back in December, but with a whole season of Betty underneath her white fur hat, there’s no way she can be denied. I mean, all those fusty voters need to do is peruse some of her finest moments on YouTube — the carnivorous foot-soak, the seeing-eye gay, the violent stairwell altercation with Marc — and they’ll have to put her name on the ballot. There is not a single woman on the small screen who scores bigger or more consistent laughs than Williams — and her ill-fated mid-season romance with Ted LeBeau (Brett Cullen) proved she can do more than just high camp.
In the drama department, as much as I’d love to see Battlestar get some long-overdue Emmy respect, I’m not terribly optimistic. It’s sci-fi, after all, and that’s a tough sell at the Emmys. That said, if voters check out even a small sampling of Hogan’s MVP-worthy work as one-eyed Col. Saul Tigh — from his execution of his tragically traitorous wife to that mind-blowing season-finale revelation — then they’ll have to overlook their narrow view of what constitutes a quality drama and give him a place on the Supporting Actor ballot. Hogan might end up carrying the hopes of Battlestar’s entire awesome cast and crew, but if anyone can handle the task, it’s him.
I could go on all day with a wishlist of potential longshot or first-time nominees — Medium’s Jake Weber, 30 Rock’s Tracy Morgan, Lost’s Elizabeth Mitchell, Brothers & Sisters‘ Matthew Rhys and Sally Field — but instead, I’ll let you guys take over. Which actors, writers, and shows deserve Emmy nominations? Let the revolution begin in the comments section below!

Definitely “Brothers and Sisters” for Best Drama, Writing, Direction, and acting all around. The best new show of the past two years. And also “Jay Leno” consistently the funniest and most entertaining of all the talk show hosts.
I know I will hear it from the haters and she has been nominated every year but Edie Falco in the Sopranos consistently delivers.
Neil Patrick Harris is consistently hilarious on “How I Met Your Mother”
“Gilmore Girls” had a rough last season, but the show’s emotional center – the wildly talented Lauren Graham – has never been nominated! Emmy voters, show some love to the first six seasons of Lorelai Gilmore! She was one of the coolest moms in TV history.
Its been said time and time again. but this time its her last chance. Lauren Graham deserves not only a nomination but a win for Gilmore Girls!
With so many of last year’s nominees no longer on the air, the Best Actress in a Comedy category is fairly open for new faces. As a result, I think Tina Fey will get a nomination, and part of me feels that Lauren Graham gave enough strong performances as Lorelai this year to maybe get one last kick at the can.
And how, Michael, can Sally Field be considered a longshot candidate? She’s both a) Sally Field and b) brilliant in Brothers & Sisters.
Add me to the Lauren Graham pile. If they don’t nominate her, Patricia Heaton and Jennifer Aniston should be forced to give her theirs. Kelly Bishop deserves some love too.
I’d throw in Connie Britton and Kyle Chandler for best actor and actress, Friday Night Lights for drama and direction, and Adam Brody for The OC.
Just about every single person needs a nomination for Friday Night Lights – Best Show, Best Actor (Kyle Chandler), Best Actress (Connie Britton), Best Supporting (Zach Gilford, Gaius Charles, Scott Porter, Adrianne Palicki). Just about everyone from The Office, too – Jenna Fischer, Rainn Wilson, Steve Carell – Best Comedy, too. Matthew Fox and Elizabeth Mitchell from Lost. Michael C. Hall for Dexter.
But seriously, Friday Night Lights needs to win everything. I’m not joking.
If Michael Emerson (Ben on Lost) doesn’t get an Emmy nod, there is SERIOUSLY something wrong in this world. And even though I know it won’t happen, I’ll still root for Michael Urie (Marc on Ugly Betty) to get one too.
LOST: the writers, directors, best drama, and a handful of acting nods
Friday Night Lights, The Wire and Lost all need Best Drama nods.
Tichina Arnold should get one for Everybody Hates Chris. Sally Field and Rachel Griffiths need them. Kyle Chandler. Jaime Pressly. Neil Patrick Harris. Kenneth from 30 Rock. Josh Holloway proved himself this year too.
But my big three would be in the Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Race. My 3 favorite women on TV
Connie Britton as Tami on FNL
Adrianne Palicki as Tyra on FNL
Elizabeth Mitchell as Juliet on Lost.
Those are some of my less obviou choices that will be ignored by most.
Allison Mack as CHLOE on SMALLVILLE
the friday night lights cast, crew, writers, directors. really. when connie britton had that BRILLIANT scene telling her daughter she’s not ready to have sex…well, if that doesn’t deserve an emmy, nothing does.
Do the emmy people actually watch television? If they did then surely Battlestar Galactica would get some love. I am with you on the Micheal Hogan thing…
Rachel Griffiths and Patricia Wettig both deserve noms for “Brothers & Sisters.” Ditto Alec Baldwin for “30 Rock” and nearly everybody on “The Office.”
Hmm, I guess Connie Britton would be a lead actress. I would trade all my other dream noms just to see her win.
If Hugh Laurie is denied an Emmy nomination for his brilliant portrayal of House again this year, I will start a riot! He is, by far, the best character on television and it’s because Laurie is a genius. Also, can they please show some love to the supporting cast on The Office? Jenna Fischer, Rainn Wilson, and John Krascinksi are more then deserving of an Emmy nod. Steve Carell is a gimmie. The man is just brilliant.
Rainn Wilson must be nominated. He completely owns that role.
Definitely Lauren Graham for Gilmore Girls. I disagree that you have to look back to the first 6 seasons for an emmy-worthy performance. Although this season had a shaky beginning, her performance in the karyoke scene in one of the last few episodes was emmy worthy in and of itself.
Peter MacNichol should get a supporting actor nod for being, by far, the best thing on an otherwise disappointing season of ‘24′.
Give some Emmy love for Sandra Oh in Grey’s. Her performance on the ferry conclusion and finale is enough for her to win.
I have no faith that BSG will ever be acknowledged, bu this argument starts and ends with Michael Hogan as Best Supporting Actor. The “evil men” speech, the execution of Ellen, the “not all of us” line, and the “My name is Saul Tigh” speech are four of the best moments of the last year. If Hogan doesn’t get a nomination, they shouldn’t even give out the award anymore. The fact that I can’t, in good conscience, even argue for James Callis while Hogan’s around is a testament to how stellar Hogan’s been this year.
Also, do they have a guest star Emmy? If So, the actor that played Defense Attorney Romo Lampkin should be nominated, too.
Lauren Graham. Oy with the poodles alredy.
30 Rock deserves some big time credit. Give Tina Fey an Emmy for this show, please!
Lauren Graham!
The Office. The Office. The Office. And James Morrison, the actor who plays Bill Buchanan in 24 — always consistent, always great.
Yes I think Vannessa needs a nom. But I also think there are several others on Ugly Betty that MUST get a supporting comedy nom and they are Becki Newton as Amanda, Mark Indelicato as Justin, and Michael Urie as Marc. These 3 steal every scene they’re in! They are amazing!
Some longer shots:
Walton Goggins “The Shield”
Michael Emerson and Elizabeth Mitchell “Lost”
Peter Macnicol “24″
Ethan Suplee “My Name is Earl”
Donald Faison and John C. McGinley (WAAAAYYYY overdue) “Scrubs”
Kevin Dillon “Entourage”
Robert Iler (for his fantastic work as AJ these past few episodes) “The Sopranos”
I’m sure I’m forgetting more.
I’d nominate everyone involved with “Lost” and “Friday Night Lights.” IMHO, “Lost” is the BEST drama series ever.
Michael C. Hall – Dexter.
