Cannes: Call it a 'Night'

You know what’s awesome about Cannes? They boo. I don’t mean a low grumble of displeasure as the credits roll. I mean hissing, whistling and hooting. Well, when We Own the Night screened last night — a period cop drama starring Mark Wahlberg, Eva Mendes, and Joaquin Phoenix — it didn’t just get booed. It got KILLED. Walking out of the screening, Missy and I didn’t know what puzzled us more: the deeply silly plot about a drug addicted nightclub owner who virtually overnight becomes a super-cop, or the fact that Sony pre-emptively paid $11.5 million for the movie before it even screened at the festival.

Ouch.

A hilarious and oddly fitting end for the Cannes film festival. Pretty much every other movie has screened, and every party has been attended. The bottom line? It was a good year. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to pass out on my keyboard.

The French Boo- It’s what they do. From what I hear, Cannes was pretty uneventful this year. The fashion was pretty hot – here are some photos: http://collegecandy.com/style/2779

I don’t care about boos, I’m excited to see We Own the Night even if (and perhaps because) it’s basically The Departed with Joaquin instead of Leo and NYC instead of Boston.

You’re right, the French boo. I can’t believe it’s that bad of a movie, not with the cast including my fav. Mark Wahlberg. And James Gray is a terrific director. I heard somewhere that apparently Phoenix is phenomenal…

Any word on Gael Garcia Bernal’s directorial debut, DEFICIT? Didn’t it have its world premiere at Cannes this year?

I’m French and all I can say is that we never boo films. Maybe the critics boo but they aren’t all French at Cannes!

Can’t wait to see it. The French hate American movies.
