On the Scene: the 'Dancing With The Stars' finale

The final showdown of Dancing with the Stars came and went, but it certainly was an evening to remember, not just for new winners Apolo Anton Ohno and Julianne Hough, but also for every former contestant and audience member seated in the ballroom Tuesday night. The energy, as Bruno would say, was electrifying.

Of course, for Joey Fatone, it’s time to hang up those dancing shoes. And Laila Ali, put away that glitter, girl, and say goodbye. You gave your best, but we guess your best wasn’t good enough. Still, it was a good ride made all the more enjoyable by some fierce competition. So what did they all have to say before hopping on a private jet to New York, where Good Morning America beckoned? Read on for some post-show bites…

Carrie Ann Inaba: "From week 2, when Apolo did the quick step, I said that he was the surprise of the season. He had this special flair for the way he moves his body, and he mastered the footwork and all the details in a way unlike any other competitor thus far. That’s when he stood out and I thought, ‘You’d better watch this guy.’"

Apolo Anton Ohno: "I only got three hours of sleep, not because I was nervous, I was just up. But no matter what happened, I was completely satisfied after our freestyle on Monday. But tonight, this is quite the birthday gift. I couldn’t ask for anything more."

Laila Ali: "I’m okay now. I was shocked at first. I was stumbling over my words up there because I didn’t have a speech ready for if I didn’t win. So that was crazy for me. But it’s over. We didn’t win and I’m fine with that. I’m happy for Apolo. I would have been happy for Joey. They’re both great dancers."

Joey Fatone: "It was either them or us, there’s nothing you can do about it. You can beat yourself in the head all you want, but all in all, we won as far as the exposure we got, and my personal experience learning so much from Kym. I feel great. It was weird, the minute they announced it, I was okay with it. Even though I really wanted us to win, I was excited for Apolo. Now I’m going to get on a plane and drink everything under the table."

This was a very close race. I kept a log of all the judges totals. Apolo beat Joey by 2 and Laila by 4. Was still disappointed that Joey did not win. But the judges showed they were pulling for Apolor and Julianne from the beginning with the “fresh youth approach” comments.

Has anyone read the Book of Mormon? Is it a sin to lust after incredibly hot girls from Utah who win the “Dancing with the Stars” competition?

  • JS

It seemed to me that if anything, the judges were AGAINST Apolo, not pulling for him. Len had a mancrush on Apolo, Bruno loved Laila, and Carrie Ann adored Joey. Poor Apolo had no one.

Len had a mancrush on IAN, I mean…oops.

  • APFN

Hooray for Apolo! I’m glad that cheater Joey didn’t win. Now, for next season, Michelle Kwan!!!

  • Diane

why do u say joey is a cheater? because he has a dance background? a lot of past contestants have as well.

  • Jo

Joey did not have ballroom dancing background. He was better than Apolo. He had a good personality and fun to watch. Plus he learned alot and incorporated all her learned in his final dance.

So glad Apolo won! It was down to my favorite two from the beginning of the show. I love them both. I’m glad Apolo won.

Jo… You kept a journal of judges scores?! Wow… kinda obsessive… HA!!

  • Silvia

Best part of this morning’s GMA appearance was seeing Bruno as backup dancer on Elton John’s “Still Standing” video & hearing how the celebrities teased him about it.

  • Ugly Allie

I read somewhere this morning that Julianne is only 18!! I knew she was young, considering they reminded us of Apolo and Julianne’s youth every five seconds, but I didn’t realize she is practically still in high school! I hope they bring her back next season–she’s one of the best professional partners on the show.

    To Seppe
    No not obsessive, just curious.

  • Michelle

Congrats to Apolo and Julianne for winning the Dancing With The Stars contest. In the beginning, I was worried they might not make it to the finals because they kept being robbed of their scores. But at the end the true winners twirled their way to the top.
Apolo was a great dancer and Julianne did a fantastic job bringing out his dancing talent to the forefront. Through patience, sheer hardwork, and persistence, Julianne was very successful in bringing out the best in Apolo. She build his confidence and helped him get out his shell. Great job to both
