Trailer Blazer: 'Bee Movie,' 'Golden Compass'

Bee Movie (Nov. 2) Keep in mind I don’t see too many animated movies these days — maybe I’m just tired of the standard-issue outsider insect/animal/inanimate object learning to Dream Big plotlines? — and I’m kind of scared of bees, but Jerry Seinfeld’s latest project actually looks kind of amusing. The animation is vivid and detailed, from the fuzzy tennis ball to the glorious aerial-formation sequence, and any kid flick that gets a laugh out of the line, "He really is dead" deserves the benefit of the doubt. Paging the nieces and nephews!

The Golden Compass (Dec. 7) It’s got Nicole Kidman, Daniel Craig, and a talking polar bear (who’s apparently an expert in contract law). It looks lush and expensively shot. And yet when I watch this trailer, I get a slight case of the drowsies. Is this a sign that I need a Sleep Number bed, or is this adaptation of Philip Pullman’s bestseller somehow looking a little less than scintillating? Discuss!

Omigod, I just finished reading the Dark Materials trilogy a couple months ago, and I can’t wait to see this movie. I like where it’s going so far! I didn’t visualize Lyra’s world looking like that (I thought it was more like the early 1900s, but since time is the same, more advanced technology makes sense), but I love it!

Also, I think it looks well-cast. Nicole Kidman in slinky gold as Mrs. Coulter, Daniel Craig as the hard, heroic Asriel, Eva Green as a witch, etc. I thought Iorek looked pretty good, and I can’t wait to see the familiars some more! I’ve got to stop typing, or I’m going to wear out my exclamation point key!

I think you need a new sleep number bed. The movie looks amazing- Lyra is EXACTLY how I imagined her in the book. Can’t wait!!

Apparently one needs to read the book to care about the movie. Does not look interesting to me at all.

so i hated the books, but the website for the movie helps you figure out what your daemon would be. it’s really fun.

Remember when a preview for Bee Movie came out a while ago that had Jerry Seinfeld and Chris Rock in bug costumes recreating a scene from the movie on a windshield set? The whole movie should be like that (live action with actors running around in bug costumes) and it would be infinitely better.
Also, I was totally on board with the Golden Compass until the talking bear showed up. And, speaking of the Chronicles of Narnia which this movie so clearly resembles, aren’t they supposed to make more Narnias? What happened to that?

I haven’t read any of the books, but I hear from people who have read them that they are mostly enjoyable, but suffer from poor writing. Makes me less keen to check out the books, but the movie look amazing!
I love animated movies, but I really wish they would take on some more imaginative plots. I’m really tired of the talking animal movies, especially because they all seem to have the same message! But I’m looking forward to Bee Movie.

I loved, loved, loved the Dark Materials books, and was so disappointed when I heard they were watering down the Big Bad for the movie so as not to offend Christians (making it a generic Authority instead of the Church). The trailer looks OK, but the bear CGI? Not so good.

Ooh…recovering from goosebumps after watching the “Golden Compass” trailer. Yes, there are a couple of disappointments – Iorek Byrnison is a bit fake looking, and somehow I always imagined Mrs. Coulter as a brunette…but it should be good. The first book in the series was the best anyway, before the plot kind of got away from Pullman, so I’ll be there when it comes out!

Wow, Moni, the website is great. Neat to find out what your daemon is – I thought that was one of the strongest, most interesting parts of the books (and of Lyra’s world).

this film may end up being good or it may not, but what we must bear in mind is it ISN’T the books. So many things must be adapted .It will not come close to the mastery of philip pullman’s writing, and it must be viewed as a separate entity. Enjoyed or disliked in it’s own right.
