The top 100 movie number quotes

Categories: Film

In response to the American Film Institute’s yearly "100 ____" compilations (Laughs, Thrills, Quotes, etc.) — and in wry anticipation of AFI’s annual June special — one enterprising YouTuber named "AlonzoMosleyFBI" put together this terrific countdown of clips from familiar films with snippets of dialogue mentioning every number from 100 down to 1. My personal fave was No. 31 because it had nothing to do with the rest of the movie and yet was amazing. Drinking game: Take a sip each time someone says a number. Wait, don’t. According to the timestamp next to my byline, it’s currently 6 a.m. on a Monday.

That was awesome. Loved 31 as well. Kristy Swanson plays a great “dumb blonde” if only for a minute.

  • mark in nyc

Knew what number 11 was going to be, yet could not help but laugh!

  • jessica

    that was pretty cool!

  • ericalina

what a great 9 minutes that was!

  • Rick Kingsley

I was hoping he would stretch 7 into 007 but no dice. I’m just happy that he included #88 (I think he got that one right)…

  • Rick in Orlando

Awesome clip show. Though, I was hoping he would stretch 7 into 007 but no dice. I’m just happy that he included the obvious clip for #88 (I think he got that one right)…

  • Wendy

I was hoping he might throw in a few fractions like Platform Nine and three-quarters.

  • Kate

They should have used Clerks for 37?!?!

  • Jakeem

Any ideas for the number zero?

  • Martha

That was great – I’m impressed with how many I recognized…and excited to see the rest eventually.

  • furry_tom

How about: “On a long enough timeline, the survival rate for everyone drops to zero” from Fight Club?

  • furry_tom

Also, a good one from Hitchhiker’s Guide, (It was in the British mini-series, but I’m not sure if it made it into the American theatrical version, since they seemed intent on ripping out anything that was witty or even remotely funny):
It is known that there are an infinite number of worlds, but that not every one of them is inhabited. Therefore there must be a finite number of inhabited worlds. Any finite number divided by infinity is as near to nothing as makes no odds, so if every planet in the universe has a population of zero, then the entire population of the universe must also be zero, and any people you may meet from time to time are merely the products of a deranged imagination.

Where do people get the TIME to put together things like that??? He must have worked at 110 percent 24/7/365.

  • Mozz

That was impressive. and I knew so many of those films.

  • No Brand Woman

Wow. That takes a lot of effort to put something like that together. I am very impressed and it was totally enjoyable! Very cool!

  • mikey

I wasn’t counting, but does Paul Newman win the award for highest number of appearances?

  • Sarah

I love things like this. :)

  • aramis

  • Tino

#1 was Lord of the Rings – not Harry Potter.
Also, one of the blank ones you have is Singles.
    Otherwise – very nice job.

  • Schaefer

Great job on the list but how could you get all of those and miss The Godfather at number 5?

  • Tre Letraj

It was easy. Never seen it :-)

  • Tre Letraj

Yep, I missed that one. Should have been obvious! :-)

  • mikey

    A few more additions/corrections to Tre’s list:
    84 – Titanic (?)
    75 – The Hustler
    74 – Ed Wood (?)
    61 – Singles
    58 – Goldfinger
    55 – Blues Brothers
    45 – On The Waterfront (?)
21 – The Lion in Winter
    16 – The Natural
2 – Isn’t The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly. I don’t know which movie it is, but I’m pretty sure the actor is Charles Bronson who wasn’t in TGTBATU.

  • Jakeem

Wasn’t the Bronson clip from “Once Upon a Time in the West”?

  • Ron Mexico

Johnny Dangerously, anyone? My mother hung me on a hook once…ONCE!
