From the novelty-rock staple—written and performed by Barnes and Barnes way back in 1978—this short film (which first aired on Saturday Night Live in 1980) was directed by Bill "Game over, man!" Paxton.

OMG! I remember this! People used to think I was crazy when I would sing the lyrics and I told them I got them off a weird video I saw on MTV2 (when MTV2 first aired over a decade ago for just a few hours a day). I still remember the lyrics…not that it’s hard.
When Dr. Demento did his top 20 most demented video countdown on Mtv, this was the #1 video. Ask a fishhead anything you want to, it won’t answer, fish can’t talk. Fish heads fish heads rolly polly fish heads, fish heads fish heads, eat them up Yum!
I have been singing this song for years and now my kids sing it everytime I make them fish sticks for lunch! I can’t wait to show them this video (although it might scare them).
I vaugely remembered this song from when I was a kid, no one else I knew remembered it…I thought I was just making things up. Thanks for confirming that it’s a real song!
This video must have cost a fortune to produce. I mean, all of those fish heads had to have stunt doubles, and stand ins, right?
I wasn’t born in 1978 so I’m too young to remember this, but somehow the song seems oddly familiar.
This song is so weird and it totally belongs on the internet.
Now why did I remember this was a Billy Mummy song? Or did Mummy record something else that was featured on Dr. Demento?
Hah! I knew it. I just googled this and confirmed that this song was done by former child actor Billy Mummy his friend, Rob Haimer, a pair who recorded under the name “Barnes and Barnes.” Now how could Wook Kim post this without mentioning the critical info that this song was co-written and co-performed by the actor who played that kid in Lost in Space?
I had heard that in 1978, some sort of parody of “lost in space” came out that allegedly featured this themesong. My mom frequently told me that the movie had a scene where “Ms. Universe (A really attractive human woman)” is put on a ship to travel around with “Mr. Universe”, who turns out to be some ugly creature. Anyone else heard of this movie?
I first saw this video way back when VH1 played music. They had this program where for one week they played music videos from A-Z. The program included Blotto’s “I wanna Be a Lifeguard”, and a rare video from old school new wavers Blue Angel featuring a then unknown singer, Cindi Lauper(with blond hair). Anyway, when I first saw the video for Fish heads, I thought it was funny and orginial but I never knew that it was first aired on SNL.
I’m jumping from post to post, but let’s hear Fergie cover that!
Thanks for the blast from my childhood! Loved it!
Wow, this was neither funny nor entertaining.
Lame.
I wonder what drugs they were on when they thought this was funny.
Thanks for posting this blast from the past. I used to see this all the time as a kid. It used to play in between movies on the old First Choice movie channel. It waa usually shown with really, really weird videos for Demon Alcohol by the Kinks and Both Sides Now by Joni Mitchell
