Ooh, while I'm at it, here's my list of shows that totally fail at science, fiction and acting:
- Andromeda
- Eureka
- Stargate Atlantis (SG-1 at least has some self-irony, Atlantis is so serious about itself it hurts)
- Heroes
(Torchwood started out okay, but then degenerated quickly. Not sure where it'll end up.)
I have wasted my time on these, so that you don't have to :-)

One thing that take away all credibility from the list though, is the inclusion of Heroes. That show must be the worst attempt at sci-fi I've ever seen. I gave it the benefit of the doubt and watched through the season one finale _hoping_ for a speck of self-irony ("Save the Cheerleader, Save the World!" ugh), a hint of intelligence or character development, but after the finale I had to give up on it. Who the heck throws a nuke _up_ into the sky in order to save people from it? Nukes kill more people the more altitude they have when they explode. Do some research... and that whole salad-stepping evolution talk; If you don't know the first thing about science, you shouldn't be writing sci-fi! (Or at the very least, write surreal stuff like Lexx, which doesn't rely on bad science science it neatly side-steps it.)

Stargate SG-1 was alright, but it's not _good sci-fi_. Their science is just..wrong, they let all the aliens speak English, and they just went on for too long. (And don't get me started on Atlantis..*shudder*)
Battlestar Galactica and Firefly must be some of the best series I've ever seen; solid character development, intelligent use of technology without taking too many assumptions, and well-developed worlds. I'd recommend those two series to anyone.
I also love Doctor Who, but can see that not everyone would enjoy the style (it's a bit...British?)
Props for putting Brazil up there, that must be one of my all-time favourite movies.

I read the top 15 (starting from the link someone on a Firefly mailing list sent me) and honestly, couldn't find much to argue with. The ranking, maybe, but that could be a matter of taste. I didn't see anything on the top 15 that didn't belong there.
However, with lists like this, I'd love to see 1) a definition of sci-fi, and 2) a separate list for movies and television. I think movies impact the genre differently than serial storytelling--they're really two different beasts. And if you did the top 15, even, from each one, you'd be opening up five more slots to make people happy. ;)
As far as definition goes... there are several suggestions from the readers that are either fantasy or horror, in my book, and therefore wouldn't make a science fiction list. (It would also clarify why Eternal Sunshine qualified and Buffy--really more traditionally horror or dark fantasy than science fiction--did not.)
