I’m sorry, I know I/we write a lot of bad stuff about the contestants, but is it really nice to show them those video clips from ppl off the street? Jordan could take it, but who knows for the rest? Like, do you think Blake likes seeing ppl say Chris is hot and Melinda will definitely win? I don’t know…
This is an amateur contest. And Not Again is right:Beat boxing is not rock and roll by any stretch of the imagination. Bon Jovi’s music spells singing suicide for those who cannot really hold a high note.
I thought it was cool how Phil’s last song was so darned appropriate. Gone down in a blaze of glory.
Melinda’s performance was, hands down, the best of the night. Randy and Simon hit it dead on when they compared her sultry, growling, and borderline angry version of Have a Nice Day to Tina Turner. Idol, and music in general, could use a voice and style like hers, so I hope Melinda doesn’t stray from that style and incorporates it into her something of her own. Rock on girl!
Um, the song is called “You Give Love a Bad Name”. It’s not called “Shot to the Heart”. Considering you used Brainiac as a screen name, I would think that you would not want to make a mistake like that. How ironic.
To those who say beatboxing isn’t rock or doesn’t belong in rock–frankly, I find this problematic. I thin it echoes a similar worldview propagated by Idol and modern radio that tries to shove everything into a niche with super defined rules. Something which ultimately only serves to stifle creativity. If rock and roll ever meant anything, it meant sloppiness and boundary defying creativity. Now, we have acts that speak to decreasing numbers–a musical echo chamber. Idol only helps perpetuate this idiocy. “Oh, Melinda, you’re not the rock girl blah blah blah.” What a meaningless and counterproductive [to music overall] idea–that we’re all these niche things [Gina is the rock girl and Blake the beatboxer and so on]. It ain’t just hip hop that’s dead, it’s pop music too. Peace out.
I am no fan of American Idol (or modern radio). I have never watched even one episode, because I believe it to be generic, gimmicky, overblown karaoke. The information I get on it and the subsequent comments I make come from these boards. So I agree with you on the homogenizing, pigeonholing tactics of both AI and modern radio.
That said, I really don’t care what you find problematic. I don’t consider spitting into one’s hand a “talent”. I didn’t when I first heard it in 1983, and I still don’t to this day. I haven’t seen one new artist – of any genre – in the past decade that holds a candle to the technical prowess of 80′s metal, the stones and conscience of 90′s grunge, the innovations of 70′s theatrical rock, or the spirit of 60′s hippie rock.
Basically, kids, I think it all sucks these days. One nerdy white kid beat-boxing on that joke of a show isn’t going to save things.
Whitney, a few articles back you wondered about how to make these boards more polite, then you go and make all these catty remarks.. why not just skip over Antonella completely instead using that as the start of an insult?
It was a good performance show overall, and the judges were spot on with the criticisms this week.
the sad thing is…..this blog proved Simon correct…1/2 will like and 1/2 won’t.
