They announced the winners of the 2007 Pulitzer Prizes yesterday! Yay! And wouldn’t you know, some PopWatch-worthy names are among the lot.
- Cormac McCarthy took home the fiction prize for his landmark post-apocalyptic novel, The Road, which, you’ll recall, is an Oprah’s Book Club selection and was EW’s pick for the best fiction book of 2006.
- The great and long-underappreciated saxophonist and jazz composer Ornette Coleman won the music prize for his album Sound Grammar.
- David Lindsay-Abaire snagged the drama prize for his play Rabbit Hole, which ran on Broadway last year with Cynthia Nixon, Tyne Daly, and John Slattery.
- The New Yorker magazine staff writer and part-time screenwriter (The Siege) Lawrence Wright got the non-fiction prize for his epic study of Islamic terrorism, The Looming Tower.
Good choices, all, we say. What do you think? Weren’t McCarthy and Coleman, in particular, totally overdue for some Pulitzer props?
Though I loved the Road. I thought this would have been another year, where the Drama Prize would not be given out. I like Rabbit Hole a lot. But Pulitzer Prize worthy… hhh… I’m not so sure.
