I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: J.C. Chasez’s solo debut, Schizophrenic, was an overlooked gem that still gets regular airplay at Casa Slezak. But when "Until Yesterday," the first single off his sophomore effort, didn’t become the new "SexyBack," I figured dude might have to set his sights on being a backup singer for his old bandmate Justin Timberlake. Surprisingly, though, it looks like his label hasn’t given up, as AOL Music is streaming a new Chasez single, "You Ruined Me," on its homepage today.
Much to my chagrin, however, the former ‘N Sync-er’s latest plays more like a reheated version of Nick Lachey’s "What’s Left of Me" than the dirty dancefloor fare of failed singles like "Some Girls (Dance With Women)" and "All Day Long I Dream About Sex." Seriously, did I just hear the phrase "standing outside your door in the pouring rain"? I can’t bear to hit the replay button and find out. This, of course, probably means it’s going to be the smash hit of the summer, but I’m just not feeling it. How ’bout you, PopWatchers? (You can hear for yourself after the jump!)

He actually sort of had me until the whole “I’m in misery” thing–it was all downhill from there. I think it would be a lot better if he did the whole song in that lower register he uses in the bridge; it would be a little more wistful and a lot less whiny.
ahh.. the sellout ballad. you gotta do what you gotta do to sell records i guess. i still like JC alot, he’s (usually) pretty “music-forward” and i think that goes unnoticed in the drab world of entertainment, but what are you gonna do?
I think the song is more Queen then anything by Nick Lachey. You Ruined Me is a beautiful pop ballad sung with passion and power. JC Chasez has an impressive voice and knows how to use it to convey the meaning behind this song.
A power ballad may not be your thing but don’t compare a good excellently sung song like You Ruined Me to any dreck by the likes of a Nick Lachey.
Not an awful song…but a total Nick Lachey clone. Now Slezak, how ’bout you do a “Snap Judgment” of Kelly Clarkson’s new song “Never Again”. THAT is the smash hit of summer.
Its around this time last year that Nelly Furtado’s “Promiscuous” began geting airplay & it turned into the hit of the summer of 2006, so as of right now, I’m giving you the top 6 aongs of summer 2007…
1. MAROON 5 “MAKES ME WONDER”
2. KAT DeLUNA FEAT. ELEPHANT MAN “WHINE UP”
3. KELLY CLARKSON “NEVER AGAIN”
4. RIHANNA FEAT. JAY-Z “UMBRELLA”
5. JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE “SUMMER LOVE”
These of course can change as newer tracks are released, but these are my safe bets as of right now & its not even warm yet…
Top 5 songs, LOL, not top 6 aongs…hahaha
And yeah, really not feelin the JC Chasez either Michael. He’ll be working single #3 before that new cd is released…
JC has the talent, he just uses the absolute wrong producers to express his sound. He is not TLC… please stop working with Dalla Austin!!! Work more with BT and Justin. That’s you’re style JC.
Umm… Nick Lachey wishes he sounded like JC. I love the song and hope it becomes a hit for him.
Slezak..man, I said a few hours ago–tell us what you think of Kelly clarkson’s new single…it mainly depresses me to watch American Idol hear the way she just nails everything she puts out, did she really come from that? It doesn’t feel like the same show anymore.
I just watched the two videos. I’ll admit that “All Day Long I Dream About Sex” is a bit catchy, but still, both of them on the whole — pretty blah.
BUT — you’ve got me obsessed with saying “raspberry rhapsody” over and over again, and I can’t ever get past six times in a row without screwing it up. It’s driving me crazy!
Re-heated Nick Lachey? Hardly. Just because it’s a ballad by an ex-boybander doesn’t mean it’s the same as Lachey’s cheesy music. Especially since 1. JC’s a MUCH stronger singer and 2. the subject matter is not the same. Unless I missed where JC got divorced from his much more famous wife and now is whining about it in a sappy song?
Some people seem to treat “ballad” as if it’s a four letter word. Nothing wrong with a good heartfelt ballad sung well like You Ruined Me.
Crap. Somehow I got this post mixed up with the one by Annie Barrett about the new Ben & Jerry’s flavor! How the hell did I do that? Maybe I should go to bed.
You Ruined Me takes a couple of listens, and once you do that, you will see what an incredible talent JC Chasez is. Vocal range, interesting instrumentation, and he sells it. It’s good, truly.
It’s a bit Robbie Williamesque. JC is very talented, and from what I can read here a lot of people agree. So why he can’t put out a smahs album? The last one had two brilliant tracks ‘Sex’ and ‘Come to me.’ This one? Better have more interesting stuff. I really want to like this song, but I’m not feeling it. Slezak is right, go back to the up beat tracks which he can actually pull off better than Justin.
His voice is good, but the lyrics are cliched.
Jason, I have to agree with you. I think he’s music forward, and unfortunately the music industry seems to put out carbon copy after carbon copy (..boooring..). I think that has really hindered his success. Surprisingly, I really liked this song. Some of you say that the lyrics are too simple and cliche, but they’re somewhat ingenius as well. I couldn’t see Justin Timberlake pulling something like that off. I went to take a listen to some of the songs off his debut album and surprise, surprise, it’s very similar sounding to the Sexyback cd. JT needs his own ideas. I also noticed that one of the songs he did awhile back has a drumline in it, and after he did it, Destinys Child and Gwen Stefani used the same concept in one of their songs. I definately wish him all the best because I think he has the potential to be a really successful artist. Someone just needs to give him the break he deserves.
Oh dude, that’s harsh. Nick Lachey? These two aren’t even comparable. Nick is talentless.
WHAT?! Nick Lachey? I don’t think so. Actually, I love Until Yesterday. I don’t think this is as good as that. But I’m sure JC’s solo record will be awesome.
I’m still irked by that Nick Lachey comment. Just no. Nick Lachey’s voice is puny compared to JC’s. The vocals in this song are great. JC is the superior vocalist. I’d say he’s easily the best among his fellow ex-boyband contemporaries. He reminds me of a modern Freddie Mercury.
And this song is just catchy. Yes, I’d prefer that JC not be this safe but it’s obvious that radio isn’t willing to accept the more daring JC (though they easily accepted Justin’s JC-wannabe SexyBack…go figure). But even if this is the “safest” of his singles, it doesn’t take from the fact that it’s a GOOD song.
Oh, sigh. Great singer suffering from terrible songs, worse lyrics. Poor JC. Someone buy him a new songwriter.
I can take him standing in the pooring rain, but not “inside the heart-shaped box”… *heavy sigh, slow head-shaking* He’s got the talent… he just needs to find a decent, non-syrupy lyricist… although, on a completely random note, his song might actually have a larger vocabulary than JT’s “SexyBack”…
You can’t compare Justin to JC. Justin knows what type of music he wants to sing and it shows on his records. JC is still trying to figure out what he wants to sing and before he figures it out, it will still sound like the all over the place Schizophrenic.
JC is a great songwriter and you shouldn’t base your opinion on ONE song. Go listen to his other stuff. Not every song on his first album is about sex. There are some amazing ballads with beautiful lyrics.
As for Justin, he would be no one if not Britney Spears and Timbaland.
JC has talent and the voice. JC’s awesome and I don’t care what others say. He can really sing and I love his new song “Until Yesterday”. I can’t wait for his new album.
JC’s talent has proves, Schizophrenic is great, the songs are challenges to music scenary. There’s not point comparasion between JT and JC, commercial success doesn’t mean musical talent.
While everyone is entitled to their own opinion, I must say that You Ruined Me, though the least risky of the lot, is a brilliant single from JC. He’s got the voice (any decent, non tone deaf popwatcher could tell you he sounds loads better than JT), the songwriting talent and the charisma. He should be up there. This song is a great power ballad that should not be talked about as a Nick Lachey clone, because the only two similarities are that they are both ex-boybanders, and that the song’s are both ballads. Jc’s way more talented. So his lyrics may sound somewhat cliched, but yes, cliche lyrics don’t always make cheesy songs, and in this case, it made it very heartfelt. I feel that all listeners out there should give JC a chance. Keep an open mind and listen. He has the potential to be a huge star.
JC is very talented. If anyone deserves a chance at a great career its him. He just has to be given a shot. He doesnt have to prove himself, he is just as talented as Timberlake.
WHERE IS THE SNAP JUDGEMENT OF KELLY’S NEW SINGLE,NEVER AGAIN!!!
IT ROCKS!!! AAAHHHH I LOVE IT!!!! KELLYRULESIWANTITTOBENUMBER1MYDECEMBERWILLROCKOHYESOOOHHHHYESSSSSSSSSSS!
I don’t like ‘You Ruined Me’ as much as I like JC’s other songs, but I really think it’s a matter of JIVE having no idea how to promote JC’s music and, instead of going full-tilt on ‘Until Yesterday’ the way they should have, they stopped that cold, back-pedaled and forced JC to start promotion all over again with YRM. It’s not a bad song, it’s just not as awesome as what JC normally puts out and those of us who like JC’s music are going to be disappointed by how normal this sounds.
I want them to release ‘Come to Me’ as a single. Now THAT would be amazing.
You’ve convinced me. It does kind of sound like a whiny Nick Lachey. But the musical composition is very JC Chasez. He just needs to step away from the heartbreaking ballads. They’re just not his style.
