Let's keep Jim Morrison disreputable

Categories: Music

Jim_lThe big news of this new day: Jim Morrison is still dead. But the Lizard King isn’t resting peacefully, says one fan from Dayton, Ohio, who is lobbying Florida’s governor to pardon the late frontman of the Doors for alleged naughty behavior during a Miami-area concert 38 years ago. Morrison’s infamous 1969 conviction for indecent exposure and profanity was on appeal when he died two years later, in Paris, at age 27. So justice, this fan argues, never has been served.

Well, all right, I’ll bite — this may be merely a shameless publicity stunt on the part of the Ohio man who’s raising the issue, but I still think he’s wrong. One theory has always been that Morrison’s legal snafu was unfair and contributed to his band’s dissolution. I’d submit, however, that because so much of his legend is based on him having been a bad boy — this Miami episode being the main illustration of that reputation — washing it from the record almost does a kind of twisted disservice to Morrison’s legacy. Sure, the rock star always denied he did anything wrong, and it’s always important to preserve the integrity of the American legal process, but posthumously pardoning Morrison could ruin his reputation.

Wouldn’t justice best be served in this case by not being served? Who’s with me, PopWatchers?

The correct answer to this question, PopWatchers, is “Who the heck cares???” Jim Morrison is possibly the most overrated rock musician ever. Whenever I see someone talk about what a “poet” he was (or think about Oliver Stone’s over-indulgent piece of crap movie) I throw up a little in my mouth.

  • Dre

He’s dead. What difference does it make if he’s exonerated of his crimes? And I totally agree with Martha. Anyone who drops enough acid can write “poetry” like Morrison’s.

  • RIGHTO

    He’s 6 feet under.
    Case closed.

it does matter and he was a great poet and i love his music. he is the all time greatest thanks for listening to my opinion

I dunno. Copernicus and Gallileo didn’t seem to lose their reputations when the Catholic Church rescinded having excommunicated them for saying the Earth is round, it’s hard to believe people are going to think Morrison’s a p*ssy (and I don’t mean “cat”) because he got pardoned posthumously.
Besides, it’d look cool on his wikipedia page.

Copernicus & Galileo, the two biggest badasses of the 16th century. Now there’s a buddy comedy in the making.

I have just about everything the Doors ever recorded. I love Jim Morrison! Leave him alone. He has been dead for many years. I think this is really shameful. “When the musics over, turn out the lights.” Well the music ended for him and the lights are out, leave him alone!

  • Eh?

I must wonder at some one who dismisses an artist for being overrated, then goes on to use “throw up a little in my mouth” which is possibly the most currently overused and overrated line to convey distaste. I mean, it was old when Reese Witherspoon used it in Just Like Heaven in 2005. Keep on with your teen movie witticisms. At least you didn’t type “First!”
I tend to agree with EP Sato. I don’t think that it would affect his image much one way or the other. He’s not all of a sudden going to be a choirboy because he didn’t pull his wank out on stage. It was his persona before that incident that set him up for those charges in the first place. And as a Floridian I would just love to see Gov. Crist talk about Jim Morrison.

Jim Morrison had sex appeal oozing out of his pores. His baritone voice was excellent and I love hearing it still. He was different and very odd but so what? He was Jim Morrison of the Doors.

  • Thump

I don’t know much about Jim Morrison, but I think the photo above is pretty cool. :)

  • Thump

By the way, “Juju” how did you come up with your name? It’s pretty cool. If you would please tell me how you came up with it or what, because it’s pretty cool man. Thanks.

  • Tim

First of all, Jim is alive. So when he hears about this, Mr. Mojo Risin will be back!

Crap, I looked it up and Copernicus was already dead by the time Galileo was born. But it could still work if we did a little creative fudging like Old Custer (“Well, everyone knows Custer died at Little Bighorn. What this book presupposes is… maybe he didn’t.”). It’d make a great Farrell/Vaughn vehicle.

  • furry_tom

In the 16th Century, the Catholic Church holds a science fair. Copernicus is a well-respected scientist, but Galileo is the new hotshot in the astronomy circuit. They butt heads at the competition, but neither of them win because they’re both declared heretics.
Can they prove that the solar system is heliocentric and escape being burned at the stake? Hi-jinks ensue.

Thump: It was a fun name given to me as a child. I used to love the candy by the name.
Jim Morrison was the frontman of the Doors. He died very young. It has been said that he drank too much one night after a concert. He simply did not wake up again. You can do research on him and the band, or buy the book.

furry_tom, great idea for a movie, maybe called “Nick & Gally”? But the fact that the discussion turned to 17th century scientists at some point just illustrates my point. Jim Morrison – who the heck cares? And “Eh?” apologies for the overdramatic teen witticism – I couldn’t come up with anything more original on short notice. But I do think that people who think Jim Morrison is a great poet need to read some real poetry…

  • Thump

Juju: Thanks for telling me, I just thought it was pretty cool. It’s nice it was a nickname and all. There was a candy named that? Hmm, pretty cool. Alright well thanks again and take care Juju. Thump.

  • Simply

His voice was great to listen to and he was easy on the eyes, period.

James Douglas Morrison or if you prefer just Jim. He was more than just a poet, writer or musician he has turned into a legend and will always be remembered some say he is over rated. I personally disagree he was maybe drunk alot and didnt sound his best but its the messages he was trying to get across that should matter .He was trying to tell us many things one being stand up do something were losing our freedoms and most of us dont seem to care. He lived his way and he did touch so many lives along the way . He was very smart and his life branched out in so many ways. Jim Morrison is not overated some of you are just under rating him . Either way you look at it he was a man who has made a name for his self which most of us will never be able to compare to . Jim and Pam i hope you are both there to welcome me to the other side and to the rest of you good luck in all you do.

Don’t do it. I guarantee he wouldn’t appreciate it. First of all, he was an artist and everyone knows they’re going along to their own beat. Second, he was a guy and flashin was his way of expressing himself. Third, what’s the problem? Anyone there, I’m sure, remembers it fondly, don’t take that away. It’s the stuff of legends, which Jim will always be.

  • Nancy Walker

No one had, or has a baritone voice like Jim Had in all of Rock’s history. He is not overrated. He earned his place with the great ones. Yes, he was high plenty of times, and I do wish he had gotten control of his demons;this is the reason he is no longer with us. I love him still. Moonlight drive, Riders on the storm, When the musics over, Touch me, Hello I love you, and Winter time love are my favorites.
The legal fiasco is just stupid. Leave his memory alone.

Jim Morrison has not only earned his place in the sun with the greats – he was the greatest! 100% straight up artist who combined his musical talents with rock theater. There has never been and will never be another LA rock band who can compare with The Doors.
If you think of the three most influential musicians from the 60’s, he fits right in there….Lennon, Dylan, Morrison
As for pardoning his “Miami crime,” I don’t know, but I’m absolutely certain that Morrison would have loved all the controversy surrounding this. After all, he’s been gone almost 37 years and he’s still creating a fuss!
