I’m going to break the comedy/action mold and go for one of my top-five gangster movies: “A Bronx Tale.” These two completely different men are trying to raise this boy to be a good man. They both want him to be better than they ever were. They may disagree on the methods, but it’s all about making him into a man. It’s just a great story.

Oh man, I love The Ref. That is one of those movies I never get sick of. Woefully underrated. Also, someone mentioned Get Over It and I gotta say that is a guilty pleasure for me. Martin Short as a clueless high school drama teacher? Hilarious.

I totally agree with Daryn on this one. I loved Galaxy Quest. But furry_tom, Art School Confidential blows. As for my own pick, I’ve always thought horror movies got a bad rap. I know not that many people saw it, but 2001 Maniacs, anyone? It was a direct-to-DVD flick starring Robert Englund and Lin Shaye, and it’s honestly great. It’s got the blood, it’s got the gore, it’s got the comedy and it’s got the nudity. What more could you possibly want from a quality horror movie?

Ooh! I just thought of another good film with no recognition: “Wild Things.” Yes, the acting was a bit sub-par but you can’t tell me you saw that ending coming. There were more twists in that movie than you could count. Highly entertaining.

    Wild Hogs is horrible!

Hey Cece – ‘D’you know how to make sauce? You know, sauce for macaroni?’
‘Is it better to be loved or feared?’ ‘It’s fear that keeps them loyal to me…’
    A BRONX TALE rules!

    maya- thank you!!!
Death to Smoochy is an insanely funny dark comedy that gives us Edward Norton as a smiley dork, Robin Williams as the insanely hilarious Rainbow Randolph, the Irish Mafia, songs like “my stepdad’s not mean, he’s just adjusting” and laugh after laugh after laugh. I had absolutely no expectations for this movie when my friends rented– now, three years later, we still quote it all the time. Highly underrated niche movie.

I love that line in the Ref where Kevin Spacey says, “You know what I’m going to get you next Christmas, Mom? A big wooden cross, so that every time you feel unappreciated for your sacrifices, you can climb on up and nail yourself to it.” He delivered it so bitterly, it was great.

Ed – you never cease to amaze. I too totally *heart* Evita. I’m still mad at the Academy for turning its nose upward at Madge for the Best Actress nomination. Ugh.
Hannah – I’m jumping on your “Drop Dead Gorgeous” boat…only one of my most favorite movies of all time!
    I’m adding a few more:
-”Aeon Flux” – I genuinely enjoyed the story for the movie adaption. Quite a unique envisioning. And Charlize kicked total booty!
-”The Return” – a quiet release for Sarah Michelle Gellar. The story and the writing was a lot better than “The Grudge”.
-”Just Friends” – if only for the comedic genius that is Anna Farris
-”My Super Ex-Girlfriend” – again, the comedic genius of Anna Farris, but throw in the awesomeness that is Uma Thurman
-”To Wong Foo…” – John, Patrick, and Wesley in drag…enough said.
-”Wisegirls” – the GOOD Mariah movie…seriously.
-”Cruel Intentions 2″ – because I HEART YOU AMY ADAMS!
*sigh* i can go on, sadly enough…

Love Drop Dead Gorgeous! (good one Hannah as I, too, dislike Dunst & Richards).
    Anyhow…”Shag”??? Love it!

  • TPK

Soapdish. “She has more lines than I do and she’s a GOD D*MN MUTE!”

  • furry_tom

Awww c’mon Todd, you can’t even give props to Malkovich’s teacher?

  • NineDaves

WOW! I am so behind some of these choices! Drop Dead Georgeous? Rat Race? Mixed Nuts? The Emperor’s New Groove? Wet, Hot American Summer? Grease 2? Saved? It’s like you’re listing my favorite movies of all time!
I’m going to add one to the mix: Playing By Heart. It’s my favorite movie of all time. Really well written. Really well acted. Really adorable!

  • Mopsy

Playing by Heart. Such a fantastic movie. A bit predictable, but the outstanding cast sells it at every turn. Sean Connery, Angelina Jolie, Jon Stewart, Gillian Anderson, Ellen Burstyn, Gena Rowlands, Ryan Phillipe – how can you go wrong?

  • Anthony

Can I give a shout out to Clue? “Yes I did it. I killed Yvette. I hated her soooo much. It was like flames. Flames. From the side of my face. Burning…”
