Turns out lukewarm reviews and misguided retail boycotts weren’t enough to suppress Jennifer Lopez’s Spanish-language debut. Como Ama Una Mujer debuted this week at No. 10 on Billboard‘s album chart, easily besting new releases from the likes of Macy Gray, Mika, Redman, and Kaiser Chiefs. (It also landed at No. 1 on the Top Latin Albums chart.) That’s no mean feat; the only other all-Spanish-language albums to enter in the top 10 have been by global megastars like Shakira, Don Omar, Maná, and Selena.
Lopez must be feeling pretty vindicated right now, especially given how personally invested she was in this project. "What I do in Spanish is different than what I do in English," she told EW’s Margeaux Watson in January. "There are definitely those two sides to me — there’s the Bronx girl who loves to dance and sing and do acting, and then there’s this romantic, introspective, thoughtful, emotional person, and I get to do that in Spanish."
It’s also a victory for Lopez’s creative partnership with hubby Marc Anthony, who co-produced the album. "[Marc] knew what I wanted to accomplish with this album," Lopez said. "Vocally, he was able to give me the confidence… He just taught me a different approach to singing." Evidently, record buyers like the result.

riiiiight. ok yes, she debuted at number 10 and all but let’s look at this from all angles. how many copies did she exactly sold compare to the other spanish albums that have debuted in the top 10? and for that matter compare to any other album in say top 10 and of her? with that in mind, her album still a flop. this will defenitely be confirm once we how much it drops on week 2, if it doesn’t just disappears all together.
Milo, thanks for your concern, but I think you need to get your grammar together before you worry about my Album sales.
Good for her. It’s hard to like J-Lo when everyone else hates her so. Not that I bought the album or anything.
Sorry, Simon, but I’m not buying it.
I’m actually a fellow Rican whose NOT a J.Lo hater. I think she’s very talented, and very savvy when it comes to her career. Her movie with Marc Anthony “El Cantante” is generating decent buzz and as a huge Hector Lavoe fan I’ll be there.
But this album is definitely a flop. You put your spin on it, so I’ll put this one: though it debuted at #10, it sold a pretty weak 49,000 units. You mention that it beat out debuts by Macy Gray, Mika, Redman and Kaiser Chiefs (as if one of the worldwide star isn’t supposed to that), but you neglected to mention she had only the SEVENTH best debut, losing out to Vince Gill, Elton John, Good Charlotte and others. Sorry, if this is J.Lo’s revenge, it’s certainly among the lamest revenges ever.
*biggest worldwide stars
Fatima, I loved you when you supported Beyonce, but J. Lo? Say it ain’t so!
Fatima, I loved you when you supported Beyonce, but J. Lo? Say it ain’t so!
Oh please, to those comments that still insist on branding it a “flop.”
The sales of the English Market are extremely different from the Latin market. It’s great to land in the Billboard 200 at all, since that chart consists entirely of all English albums. She did pretty damn good for a debut Spanish LP.
Como Ama Una Mujer ranks:
Switzerland #1
Italy #2
Spain #2
Germany #4
#1 USA Billboard Top Latin albums
#1 USA Billboard Top Latin Pop albums
#9 on the WORLD chart.
Como Ama Una Mujer sold more in one week digitally than any other Spanish-language release ever.
She also makes history with the highest sales of a Spanish album debut, inclusive of English and Latin artists.
Suck it, kids!
Nostalgia, thanx for the facts, but I am going to challenge you on the lil’ nugget of knowledge you mentioned last…when you said the album sold more copies digitlaly than any other Spanish language album ever. You DO realize the album has been on pre-order from iTunes since February & everyone that pre-ordered the disc to receive the single, “Que Hiciste” receives an e-mail todownload the rest of the cd, as well as a bill for the entire cd the day its released?? So I’m not dissing your statistics but the only reason it was such a big digital sales performer was due to 2 MONTHS worth of pre-orders dude. I mean, thats still impressive, but I’m just tryin to set the record here. Personally I like J.lo. I have most of her cds, but I’m waiting on her new English disc this Fall. I liked the last one & felt she had a few more singles on there, but then Sony stopped working her to radio after her 2nd single with Fat Joe flopped. Wait til she performs on Idol next week, the cd will go Top 10
Known fact: J.Lo made a great C.D. that I actually like to listen to in my car….priceless.
Stephen-
oh no. Hardly a giant J.Lo fan. Did NOT buy this album, nor will I ever will. But I find the woman charming on talk shows, I like her in movies for the most part, and she has a couple songs that I would still listen to today. I wouldn’t call myself a fan, but I think she’s found herself as an unfair target for the general population’s gossip ragged out hostility.
Nostalgia-
When you’re referencing Jennifer Lopez’s numbers in Switzerland and Germany (#4? oooh, is she behind Hasselhoff over there?) to try to convince us this isn’t a flop…i think you MAY be reaching.
Some of you people (Ceballos!) are just pretty pathetic trying to debate hardcore facts to support your unfounded arguments. Really, what exactly are your intentions by adamantly refusing to admit Jennifer’s sales are actually very decent? For someone who is invariably sure Como Ama Una Mujer is a flop, you sure spend a lot of your time trying to convince everyone else to think the same.
victory schmictory.. Her crappy album may have debuted at number ten on the billboard charts (BIG F**KING DEAL), but she will get her’s in the end.. She is a mean, dispicable snob who has stepped on people to get to the “top” and she deserves all the crap that will be handed to her in the future.
Fatima, one word, phew! I agree. I think her credibility as a decent romantic-comedy actress and non-diva have taken a harsh blow w/ the debacle that was Bennifer. I enjoyed some of her songs, very catchy. I like her more now as opposed to before when all you saw on the mags was her face.
