Matt– if you want American Idol to go away, just don’t watch it. Don’t call in. When people vote for the terrible people, it only encourages the producers to put those people through to the next round. If Kelyl Pickler and Bucky hadn’t been voted into the Top 10 last year, maybe Sanjaya wouldn’t have made it past the Hollywood round this year. You are not “bringing down the monster”….YOU ARE JUST ENCOURAGING IT!
No, JenJen… I don’t think tuning out will make American Idol go away. I think voting for the worst & making the show irrelevant will. Kind of like Pop Idol. So that’s what I’m going to do.
If the worst person wins, that won’t kill the show. The better people in the top 10 will still be successful, and it’s that hope that keeps people auditioning and tuning in.
Howie no longer has the audience or the influence to get done what he claims he has. His listener numbers are a mere fraction of what they were before he jumped to satellite radio. HOWARD STERN IS NOTHING! Hoo Hoo, Robin!
Hoo hoo Robin, I invented American Idol. Tell em Fred! I called it Howie Idol. They ripped me off! Everyone rips me off!!! Hoo hoo!
I think AI should change the minimum age to 18 or even 21. These kids just aren’t old enough to know what they’re doing. They get sucked into this big nasty machine and spit out again and will probably be f’ed up for life. For every well-adjusted Jordin Sparks, there’s a clueless and pitiful Kevin Covais, John Stevens, or Sanjaya.
But wait, in all of these reality shows, no matter who’s judging (a panel of three, the other team, tests of skill, the IQ-challenged audience), I don’t think I’ve ever seen the most talented person win.
The most camera-ready, yeah. The most manipulative, yeah. The loudest, yeah. But the best? No, these contests don’t give us the best.
So the idea that these VFTW wankers are having some big effect is a mistaken one. Reality shows are just one big, audience manipulating wank festival.
They’re fascinating, but they’re not fair, or real, or based on merit, or particularly valid.
Think about it.
There have already been TWO huge flops…Ruben & Taylor. Both bad choices.
annie, annie – no, having sanjaya give embarassing performances and deny someone who could use the showcases to build up a fan base is not funny. your attitude is cynical and i don’t think you would find it so amusing if you were in a competition and people intentionally messed with the results. when i was in school, you had the people who were into school and enjoyed themselves then you had the outsiders who mocked, ridiculed and made school unenjoyable for those who enjoyed it. these are not real outsiders – real outsiders couldn’t care less about school or idol, these are wanna be outsiders who would like to think they are above it all. that be YOU, howard stern (poor howard, nobody’s paying attention to him – has to use idol to get some) and vote for the worst.
I am with you all the way, fluffy. People with no life of their own so they decide to destroy a 17 year old boy’s life for fun. You will meet your maker down the road..he knows you.
No one is destroying Sanjaya’s life! You people are going overboard. Don’t forget that this is just a television show. I’m sure Sanjaya knows that. And he’s 17, not 7. I’m sure he knew what he was getting into when he decided to appear on the show, sign the release forms, etc. He knows that he’s putting himself on display in front of the entire country & that he can have as many detractors as he does fans.
Again, it’s just TELEVISION. We’re not destroying anyone’s life… except for maybe yours. Sounds like you care too much about American Idol. So this is probably for the better, no?
And yes to starchild and fluffy.
Whether the VFTW cheesecranks have an effect or not, it’s really giving permission to cruelty, snarkier-than-thouness, and nasty behavior.
Maybe the PC crowd went too far, but the anti-PC crowd isn’t interesting or valuable. We don’t need more American ugliness, stupidity, racism, sexism, homophobia, xenophobia, shallowness, or poorly disgused jealousy.
I say, if you want your 15 minutes of fame, do the work and get yourself some actual talent. And stop frakking around with people’s lives.
Fame isn’t an invitation to cruelty, or to a nightmare romp of the audience’s gleeful sociopathy.
Dylan said, “Just because you like my stuff, it doesn’t mean I owe you anything.”
Who’s saying anything about ugliness, stupidity, racism, sexism, homophobia, xenophobia, shallowness, or jealousy? I think you’re reading into things way too much.
And as far as people wanting their 15 minutes of fame, don’t you think the same can be said about the dozens upon dozens of American Idol contestants, not to mention the hundreds of thousands of auditionees?
I think the VWTW people have just enough right to vote as the next person, regardless of their intentions. I liken it to the election: the idiots in middle American got to vote for the worst when they put Bush in office twice.
So don’t overreact so much about a television show. You & I both know that Sanjaya will probably only make it a few more rounds anyway. He’s not winning, as much as I’d like to see that.
Sanjaya ruins his own life by running his mug up on the television for everyone to see. If he wasn’t fame obsessed like 85% of the other morons in our country, he wouldn’t be subjected to all of this ridicule.
If the Stern vote exposes American Idol for the hallow piece of garbage that it is, then God bless him! The sooner we get this rubbish off of the air, the better off we all will be.
And baba-freaking-booey to that, ladies!!!
It’s not just about this show. A number of websites have actually taken down their boards recently because the troll behavior is just out of control. Yes, the absurd yahoos have gotten their president into office, and last year they chose the American Idol, too.
This is nothing to celebrate.
Craig Ferguson made national news last month because he behaved like a decent, intelligent human being. If that’s not a stinging smack upside American culture these days, I dunno what is.
And hey – this is EW – and it’s the generally more insightful and intelligent section of the site. We’re not out at the vile non-Popwatch section, where the AI boards are covered in vomit – really, just vile and inexcusable behavior on those boards.
I’m not at remedial Teen Beat here – or Ig’nant Backwoods Cracker.com. If you want to get a free pass to batter people just because they’re famous, and to take cowardly potshots at 17-year old boys, you’re gonna get called on it.
