It also must be a big-fluffy-hair thing

Categories: American Idol

Howardsanjay_lWhile the folks at Vote for the Worst rejoice at the fact that Sanjaya Malakar now officially has to be part of the American Idol tour, Howard Stern’s jumped on the bandwagon by encouraging people to vote — in jest — for America’s favorite punching bag.

Now, I know this must freak a lot of people out — people who think Sanjaya winning would be a huge disgrace to the purpose of the show. But to me, the purpose of the show is the joke — a huge, fun, hilarious joke that absorbs most of the TV-watching nation, especially those of us who write about it. Daily. No really, every single day. (We know, we know. I personally know.

Idol is an entirely fabricated and controlled mini-universe that manufactures these human products. Past winners have gone on to amazing career success, but must they all?Do we NEED the American Idol to be the one to sell all the records? Whowould it hurt, besides the producers, if the winner was a huge flop? Maybe, just once, we should f— it up!

Who’s with me?

After the jump: More evidence that the joy of Idol is in the joke…

Idol_other_little_girl_lThis poor little thing was another young crying girl in the audienceTuesday night. I happened to catch her seething jealousy — andexcellent launching pad for a long life of resentment — during thecredits. Awww. She doesn’t get to hug the scary robots. I feel prettybad for her.

Yeah, it’s a great joke, except for a 17-year-old boy named Sanjaya. Okay, so he’s not entirely an innocent, but to have your talent and person trashed on the Web regularly, to have people scheming to keep you on to show how bad you are, and to be facing career disaster — if that’s what actually would happen — because people think it’s funny to slaughter you, at 17, that’s not much of a joke to me. The kind thing would be to let the guy leave as soon as possible so he can have a normal teenage life and good stories to tell. But then Howard and EW would have less material for their products, right? Let’s exploit the 17-year-old to sell stuff to the hip folk by moaning about how bad he is and how Idol is just a commercial machine. Like, say, this place.

I actually kind of like the idea of subverting the AI process, not least because it would be bad for the producers (maybe). As long as Sanjaya keeps amusing me with performances like Tuesday’s, I’m good.

I think voting for the worst is so incredibly cruel. Can you imagine what that would do to your self esteem?

  • Jimmy in Austin

My wife calls him Sangina. That cracks me up.

  • Jen

I think it sort of sucks when people vote for the worst, because I am SO sick of listening to Sanjaya. Plus, the people who spend all this time and energy to figure out who the worst is and vote for them a whole bunch really need to get a life. But, then again, I don’t vote at all, I just watch and then get on with my life.

  • I Agree with Fluffy

    Well stated, Fluffy.

Actually this has already happened when Taylor Hicks won last year. Has anyone heard anything from him lately? I know the charts say his cd is a bust. So the best don’t always win, do they Chris Daughtry?

It’s kind of like 16-year-old John Stevens in Season 3. He got a lot of the grandma vote, but as time went on, he realized he was in waaay over his head. After a while, you could see the kid sweating onstage; a deer caught in the headlights. For some reason Sanjaya doesn’t seem to have figured this out yet. Maybe he needs a few more weeks, or maybe he never will. Either he’s not very bright, or has an overly healthy ego.
Despite that, (or maybe because of it) I’m with you, Annie. Let’s stick it to the “man”. Let’s mess with the system. As you pointed out, it won’t hurt anyone, except the producers & they’re making plenty of money with the show itself.
All together now: Sanjaya, Sanjaya, Sanjaya!

I saw that girl too. Her split second jealousy was more interesting that those annoying tears.

  • David

“Past winners have gone on to amazing career success” Really? Who besides Kelly Clarkson (ok, maybe Underwood) How’s Reuben doing? How about Fantasia? Hicks?

  • sam

I am tired of people representing Sanjaya as the worst that Idol has ever had. That is simply not true–he has a small voice, but it is not terrible. He is a cute young boy that little girls and grandmas love. The world won’t end if he stays on for a while–it will go on even if he wins. To me, there isn’t much difference between him and Taylor–actually, I find Sanjaya less irritating to watch.

  • Nancy Walker

I simply detest Howard Stern! He is a certified jerk. He is a pig. Why doesn’t he realize his mug is falling?

  • PS

The worst of the worst was Makalah Gordon. What she did to “son-of-a-preacher man should be a crime. Second prize goes to Camille Velasco. Her good looks got her a spot in the top twelve because her talent is zilch. John Stevens was bad too, and Keith from Atlanta was by far the most delusional.

  • Bingo

At least the young man is cute, which is more than I can say about as-the stomach turns. Yuck, bleh, gross, disgusting chicken neck booger face.

  • Gary

There hasn’t been a ‘Pop Idol’ in the UK for about 4 years, since a talentless singer won and disappeared into instant obscurity, only to re-emerge a couple of years later as a subject of a weight-loss reality show (she was… erm … rather obese).
Once a talentless entrant wins, the novelty value disappears and the ratings disappear. Kiss AI goodbye when that happens…

  • Sally

I agree with Fluffy. This has turned into a cruel joke, and I too don’t like Howard Stern, who is a complete juvenile imbecile.

  • furry_tom

I think that at the age of 17 Sanjaya probably has a good idea of how the world works. If you’re a celebrity, than you are an open target for tabloids, radio shows, podcasts, blogs or any other medium, and there’s no better way to achieve insta-celebrity than by being on American Idol. If you don’t want to be exploited than don’t put yourself in a position to be exploited.

  • non fan

I’m with ‘fluffy’ down there. Seems the whole AI machine is focusing on the ‘reality’ and not the music. The reality can be downright cruel, but hey, they’re only people right? They have no dignity, they’re expendable …what’s a few jokes at their expense. When Kelli Pickler was on with Seacreast baiting her for the obvious,a few weeks back, I saw the show for what it is. Sensationalistic crap. Shame too…I used to like the show.
The Howard Stern types are the reason for the cynicism and cruelty in this country. But then, their fan base are exactly the same type of character, aren’t they?

  • Joe C

I agree. While I don’t care for Sanjaya, I think the whole thing is funny. I am picturing it if somehow he won; just the screaming that would go on for days afterwards. Go Sanjaya!

  • BLM

Howard Stern is a genius and deserves credit for helping to create the Sanjaya movement. It’s not cruel–Sanjaya can bow out of the contest at any moment. He’s also not that bad–the judges but him in the top 24, so he’s a better singer/performer than the 20,000+ other people who auditioned. So what if he’s the worst of the top 12? If he would win, he would end up with a recording contract and a huge fan base. That’s more than I could ever hope for. He’s far luckier than me!
I also haven’t watched the show since season 1 and this has renewed my interest. I even voted for Sanjaya on Tuesday night. I love him, I love the Sanjay movement and I love Howard Stern. So quite crying, everyone, and have a little fun!!

  • Jason

Stern is a joke, what does he have now, 3 million listeners? He doesnt have any control over viewers votes, hes just mad his name isnt in the papers anymore b/c he took the money and is now stuck with the same amount of listeners as when he started in radio.

  • I hate Jason

    Jason makes out with guys!

  • I hate Jason

  • um, no

“Maybe, just once, we should f— it up!”
Sorry I disagree. As much as AI pains Annie Barrett to the point that she wants to make Sanjaya the winner just for the heck of it, its actually much more cruel TO HIM. Not to mention the people out there living outside of NY & LA that want to sing, but never get the exposure to crack an industry like this. This is their shot.
Sorry if I dont agree with the sage Howard Stern & Annie Bareett by saying “SKREW em all! Let the worst singer win!”, while people like Melinda who you KNOW would never get noticed by a real record company because she looks nothing like Britney Spears or Haley Scarnato get voted off to make you all get a belly laugh at Sanjayas staying power.

  • delilah

Sanjaya is in the top 10, isn’t he?
Don’t they give him a phone number each week so people can vote for him?
It’s not like we’re doing anything that is beyond the rules of the game, so to speak.
We’re just helping the dorky kid get elected prom king.
If they didn’t want him to be the AI, he should have never made it out of Hollywood – I blame the producers for all of this wonderful fun!

  • Ed

It must be a slow week in entertainment. Where are the new blogs?
It’s friday girls, lets get those heels on and start clicking!

  • Matt

I think this is a brilliant idea. And I’m encouraged by what Gary said re: Pop Idol in the UK. Maybe this will finally bring down the monster that is American Idol! I have no problem with the TV show, but they’re oversaturating the music market with their crap pop! The only decent AI act has been Kelly Clarkson.
And for all the people who think this ploy is preventing other, better singers from their just desserts, I can assure you that no matter what the outcome, most of the other contestants will walk away with a record deal. That’s the whole reason why American Idol is a joke these days: the top prize is moot! No matter how far Sanjaya goes, & how many better singers he outlasts, the “more deserving” contestants will still have craptastic pop albums out this time next year. Just look at the other “losers” (Daughtry, Bice, Aiken, McPhee, Gracin).
So in the meantime, let’s mess with the system & stick it to the man! God bless Sanjaya, our new lord & personal savior!

  • Stephanie

Hi, I’m Sanjaya, and I am not smiling in the picture, I just farted.
