Update: TV Pileup Resolved! (Sort Of)

Categories: TV Traffic Jam

My goodness, PopWatchers, if you weren’t in a helpful mood this morning. Aside from making the groundbreaking suggestion that I not watch the morning talk shows (whaaaa?), you managed to come up with countless helpful suggestions to resolve tonight’s 8 p.m. network TV clusterfrack! Here are the options for each…

Friday Night Lights: SHOULD NOT BE IN THIS TIME SLOT TO BEGIN WITH, NBC; Should be watched live by all those with Nielsen boxes at all cost, even if you have to train your dog to turn on the TV at 8; can also be seen on NBC’s website tomorrow morning, with an iTunes season pass, or in reruns on Bravo, Fridays at 6 p.m. and Saturdays at 4. THE BEST SHOW ON TV DESERVES BETTER, NBC.

Survivor: Should be watched live to avoid being spoiled; can also be seen on CBS’s high-quality InnerTube site tomorrow, or via OnDemand. Or it could also allegedly be "let go." Thank you for trying to save me, Ellipsian… but that’s unlikely.

Bones: Should be watched live because it is strangely addictive, wonderful television; can also be seen on MySpace tomorrow, or a seasonpass could be purchased on iTunes for those who want to see Brennan andBooth exchange snarky-yet-meaningful looks over and over and over.

America’s Next Top Model: Should be watched live to avoid being spoiled; can also be seen in reruns on Sunday night (though its placement opposite Desperate Housewives and Cold Case makes it risky, not because I watch Cold Case but because I TiVo it in case Amazing Racedoesn’t start on time). Or, everyone can read Vanessa Juarez’s awesomeTV Watch, which may be different than mine was but we shouldn’t fearchange, niblets.

Finally, apparently it is possible to have more than one TiVo/DVR. Thatkind of talk will just lead me to madness, PopWatchers, and because ofmy burning desire to not become a crazy housebound person, I’ll goahead and pretend I didn’t know that was an option. Okay. Whew.Disaster averted! Thanks, everyone!

I’m laughing at your desire to avoid dual-wielding DVRs, Whitney: I am trying to avoid the same fate by wearing similar blinders. If I’m not careful I think I’m going to find myself legally domestically partnered to my TV and TiVa.
…which might not be so awful, in retrospect, but I haven’t yet upgraded to a plasma/LCD set, so it’d just be sad! (He says flippantly, as if it’s not sad already. Oh man, I need some help.)

  • LisaMama

Thanks for the tips! I usually watch FNL and TiVo Bones (which I can’t watch with the little ones still awake). But watching FNL during the hectic kids’ bedtime hour is always a pain! Now I can TiVo the Bravo showing.
By the way, I nominate Friday Night Lights for the EW cover “Best Show on TV You’re Not Watching.”

  • Ellipsian

Oh, and are you feeling me on the dirty, dirty “P”, Whit? I know you are! Although maybe it really IS a good luck charm and de-germing it will remove all hope of renewal…oh dear Lord, I have to leave and go find a life now. Excuse me.

  • Ellipsian

No, smarmy PopWatchers, I’m not back with my new Life in tow, but while I was slipping on my shoes I just had to agree with LisaMama on the “Best Show on TV You’re Not Watching” nom for FNL. Although I’d like to see it split with Veronica Mars, seeing as how they’ve gone and redeemed themselves in the second half of this season.
    Okay: Me. Life. Now. Bye.

Do not fear the dual-DVR people! I have 2 DVRs and I love it love it love it! Tonight I will put my kids to bed while my 2 DVRs record Survivor and ANTM and later on I will watch both of them in peace and quiet and gleefully skip over the commercials/boring parts. Remember how after you got your DVR you wondered how you ever lived without it? Yeah, well now I wonder how I ever lived with only 1 DVR, and I don’t even write about TV for a living. Just do it Whitney, you know you want to.

We’ve discovered something facinating about our DVR. We pay for a DVR that will record 2 shows at the same time. We discovered, however, that we can actually record 3 shows at the same time if the 3rd show is recording off the HD antenna that my husband has installed in the attic.
So, I would watch Survivor live with my son, while recording both Bones (via HD antenna) and ANTM.
    I know. It’s sick.

  • Joe C

I gave ‘Bones’ a try last week; it was okay, but I don’t see what the fuss is about. I’ll give it another shot….

  • melissa

whitney, i would really appreciate you coming back to write to tv watch for ANTM. i am a dedicated tyra lover/hater and really the best part of the show for me last season was reading your opinions the next day. i used to fall out of my chair laughing. and now i cry because vanessa (who i’m sure is lovely) is no whitney, dammit. come back.

  • Kitty

Okay, I’m a Luddite. Couldn’t get DVR in my area with Directv. So I have 4 VCRs. I haven’t hooked up my new VCR/DVR combo yet. I don’t mind the whirls and clicks. It’s easy to operate, tapes are cheap. And I have no pile up problems. Of course, I gave up on Bones a long time ago. And made peace with myself that I will read the EW TV Watch and Television Without Pity summaries long before I ever see the recorded episodes.

  • Souris

That’s EXACTLY the predicament I’m in tonight. I’m having to use up every method I have of recording, and thank heavens I have them all. DVR “Bones” and “Friday Night Lights” (currently my two favorite shows, “FNL” especially), use the VCR on the bedroom TV to record “ANTM” and use my computer to record “Survivor.” This is the worst network-scheduling pileup I’ve ever seen.

  • Ep sato

Whitney, of all my Myspace buddies, you are by far the coolest, sassiest and bestest writer of them all. You use frack in sentences, drop sarcasm like it’s hot, get hit on by Billy Bush (actually, that one wasn’t so cool) AND love FNL the way I do.
I’m already spoken for so I can’t ask you out (and most of my dood friends are kinda ugly), but will you be my Myspace BFF anyway?

  • Ellipsian

Joe C, Bones rewards continuous viewing, although it is, in essence, a season-long arc-less show. Give it a few more episodes, marvel at the witty dialogue and excellent cast, and it will sink its bony l’il fingers into you. Good times, I promise.

  • Jen

FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS has reuined all other shows for me b/c it’s making other shows look like crap. Serioulsy, shows I used to love now just feel contrived and I’m getting really aware of their “acting”. So I’ll just be watching AND Tivoing FNL, problem solved.

  • Mozz

wait a minute, Whitney is on myspace… i am so looking for you and adding you… please accept.

  • Denise

Two TiVo’s and one set on a splitter. Got Survivor live, while the TiVo’s handled FNL (I won’t ever ever ever ever miss that) and Bones.
    People, it can be done.

  • LisaMama

    Joe C -
Ellipsian is right – Bones gets better the more you watch it. The chemistry between Bones and Booth is great!

  • John K

Hey, get two TiVo’s and watch a 3rd – heck, I have a VCR ready to go if I need to watch a 4th at the same time (and have done that before!).
As for Friday Night Lights, when is the TV Watch coming on that? Even EW is warming up to the thought that it’s the best show on TV, you’d think that would be enough to garner a TV Watch. Come on, EW, you know it’s a great show, start acting like it!

  • Tim

    Whitney,
No offense to Vanessa, but I really do miss your spin on the ANTM TV Watch. Your snarkiness simply cannot be duplicated. Plus, I miss being referred to as a “niblet.” PS – When are we getting a new Chart Flashback? I’ve been jonesing for one for what feels like a month now.

  • aymzer

Does anyone on here know anybody with a Nielsen box? I don’t and was wondering who the heck has them!

  • Penny

I agree with ya Lisamama and I’ve said it too.. someone has to help save FNL! Best show on right now. I’d give up some old time faves to keep this show on the air. I wish people would give it a chance and know that it’s not all about football.

  • Dre

I actually do know someone who has a Nielsen box. I keep begging her to watch Veronica Mars but she won’t do it.

  • LV

Good call about “Bones” being addictive. I came for David Boreanaz, I stayed for the chemistry he and Emily Deschanel have and for the interesting supporting characters. I especially like how Angela serves almost as the audience’s spokesperson – asking the questions we have and making the exclamations (“That’s disgusting!”) we’d make. They’ve really improved the show since the first season, and I’ve gone from sporadic watching to faithful watching as a result.

  • shan

I agree with John K. – when is the TV Watch for FNL coming? Time can be wasted on TV Watches for The Hills, but not FNL. I know this is the best show on TV, but I didn’t realize how much I missed it until it came back last night. I love it!!!

  • miki

Friday night lights really is one of a kind…I agree with one of the posters that said it ruined other shows for them because thats exactly how I feel… and I watch way too much TV!
