Good news, music fans: The two albums from ’80s supergroup Traveling Wilburys will finally be reissued on June 12 by the noble historians at Rhino Records. The group — comprised of Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Jeff Lynne, Tom Petty, and Roy Orbison — is best known for 1988’s "Handle With Care"; while Petty’s been doing the tune in concert for years, Jenny Lewis’ decision to cover that song on last year’s Rabbit Fur Coat seemed to get plenty of hipsters asking, Dude, how come I can’t buy the original? And, as we all know, what the hipsters want, the hipsters get. Huzzah!
Anyway, I’m psyched to have another chance to own Vol. 1, especially "End of the Line," which I’ll always associate equally with the death of Roy Orbison and the sad realization, while filling out my proposed schedule for high school, that I had no idea what I wanted to be when I grew up. But that’s neither here nor there. Must learn to focus.PopWatchers! Let’s see if we’ve got the same power as the hipsters: What out-of-print album, DVD, or book would you like to see reissued? My vote: the My So-Called Life DVDs. Your turn!

I was just looking for this song on iTunes the other day. They used “Handle with Care” on an episode of “The Black Donnellys” and I remembered how great it is. Hopefully the reissue will be available for download.
Many of Ike & Tine Turner’s original LPs are long out of print; those would be nice.
And how about The Beatles “Let It Be” on DVD?
Dear Popwatch Genie,
I’ve been extra special good this year, and wish for the following:
1) Full runs of “get a life” on dvd. Rhino re-issued like 9 episodes in 2000, and it’s been out of print since. Of course, the DVDs would remind people not to watch GAL immitator “the winner”, but I still want’em.
2)A NON director’s cut edition of Blade Runner on dvd.
3) An official copy of Sam J Jones’ Flash Gordon on DVD
A friend of mine tried burning me a copy of the Raincoats eponomyous debute, but it was too scuffed to play. Also, I’ve never seen My Dinner with Andre and wish it’d come back into print so I could at least rent it.
I meant “eponymous debut”
I second the entire Get a Life series too. I’ve been waiting for that for a while now (3 whole months).

My So-Called Life. Oh, wouldn’t that be grand? As grand as China Beach. With loads of extras.
It will probably never happen because of music licensing costs, but I would love to see Dana Delany’s series “China Beach” on DVD. I’m a sucker for depressing Vietnam-era drama. The last season, in which the series followed the characters through their post-Nam lives, was particularly memorable.
Wonder Years on DVD!
I don’t know if it was ever issued in the first place, but can I get DVDs of the Jackson 5 cartoons? Ain’t nothing sweeter than Michael and Tito travelling on rainbows and other hippy, trippy animation backgrounds. (Plus, it taught valuable lessons!)
F.T:
“My Dinner with Andre” is always played on cable. It’s right up there with “Diary of a Mad Black Woman” as one of the most overplayed films on cable, no offense.
I’d like to see Paul Collins and The Beats (“You won’t be happy”) two records on CD or as download on ITunes.
Thank heavens the Wilburys will be on CD! That’s literally the last audiocassette I have that I need to upgrade to the CD… now how about getting The Beatles’ Let it Be on DVD? Or even better, The Letter People?
I actually had to order a copy of the cds from some Russian website. When I was a kid, we used to take roadtrips and the Wilbury’s were always playing. Even after losing the cassette I could still sing all the words. NOW this is a super group.
No offense taken. I don’t have cable* so I rely mostly on renting DVDs or watching tv over someone else’s place. I just like talky movies (Clerks, Kicking and Screaming (not the Will Ferrell version), Before Sunrise/Sunset) and I heard that it falls in line with those.
*Yes, me and the Amish.
I want the entire Bruce Lee as Kato series The Green Hornet. Only two episodes are available in an edited-together TV movie version.
Tom, you like talky movies? I know this is off topic, but help me with something then. I love “Swingers” – and I’d say that’s about as talky as I have ever seen. My wife hates it, says it’s just annoying.
People here view you as a sage of pop culture. What are your thoughts on “Swingers”?
And, I’d like to see every Loverboy album reissued. Okay, maybe not. “Lovin’ every minute of it…ALRIGHT!!!”
Oh Rich, I second that emoticon! I got some episodes of Bruce Lee as Kato on vhs about a decade ago and LOVED it. Every scene, the Green Hornet would be all “Me and Kato are going to fight you”. Then, the Green Hornet would go hang out in the corner while Kato went in and took on what seemed like endless armies of rock’em sock’em henchmen. That would be a FANTASTIC series to see on dvd.
And Loverboy’s okay. They play rockfest in Cadott, Wisconsin pretty much every year (as of 1999 they still did anyway). Anyway, we are all working for the weekend.
oh, this is exciting. the wilburys were one of the first cd’s i put on my ipod a few years ago. i’m so glad my parents have a million cd’s, since apparently it has been hard to find. “end of the line,” “margarita,” “last night,” “tweeter and the monkey man,” “congratulations,” the songs are endless!!!! love it!!!
Swingers!
Another paragon of dialogue over style, (Not to say that it doesn’t have style. It has a much richer visual style than the aforementioned Clerks, but it certainly doesn’t have a overtly stylized feel to it, especially considering Liman’s later work on Go and the Bourne movies). It’s possible that your wife might not like it because there are very few entry points for average female viewers, (all the main characters are men and they sit around all day playing video game hockey). I suppose you’re enjoyment of the movie really hinges on how likeable you find Favreau (who has since ballooned up to Harold Ramis proportions) and Vaughn. But if you don’t laugh at Favreau’s incredibly awkward “Well, we’re not in Kansas anymore” joke, then you’re probably not my kind of people.
I think my favorite part of the movie is when Sue (was it Sue?) gave his “manifest destiny” speech to Mikey.
“She’s a good girl, and I love her to pieces, but f**k her…”
Yeah, I definitely find Favreau likeable. And you have to love Vaughn’s role of the “leader/player” that still loves and looks after his awkward, introverted friend.
I sometimes catch Favreau on “Table for Five” (or whatever that’s called). I think he’s pretty damn talented. Why is he not bigger (not physically) is a mystery.
And Harold Ramis is, for my money, one of the funniest jokers in all of entertainment.
To see Kevin Arnold awkwardly court the lovely Winnie Cooper again on digital video would certaily be a treat. Music Rights be damned.
I loved the Wilburys too, Whitney; I remember ‘Handle With Care’ on the radio; I had just started my senior year in college. Tom Petty’s ‘Last Night’ and George Harrison’s ‘Headed for the Light’ were my two faves. Thanks for the tip.
Geez, I didn’t know “Traveling Wilburys” was so hard to find. I have the first one on cd, which I probably haven’t listened to since it first came out. Now I feel old. Hey Ep sato – WB’s going to be releasing a HUGE edition of BLADE RUNNER later this year . . . with ALL versions known in existence . . .
Oh and there’s going to be a special edition of FLASH GORDON (Sam Jones)this spring too!
“Tweeter and the Monkey Man” was my favorite song when I was 7. Of course, I actually thought it was about a man who was half monkey.
I would kill for “My So-Called Life” DVDs. They’re $300 on ebay!
chazbott**virgin megastore shows China Beach dvd but as not yet released. That may be a sign its coming soon.
John, you get the honorary title of “popwatch genie” today. I’ve been BEGGING for this ever since 1999 when the Director’s cut came out on DVD.
How I love wishing for stuff on this board, it all comes true!
Great to hear about the re-emergence of the Wilburys. The 2nd one (vol. 3) is a bit weaker without Orbison (and I remember all the speculation at the time about who might replace him and become the new “lost” Wilbury…Warren Zevon, Elvis Costello, and Del Shannon were all mentioned), but features some great singing from Dylan. On a somewhat related note, I read somewhere that ANOTHER round of reissues of Elvis Costello’s albums with the Attractions is in the works. This makes, what, the 3rd time these are being re-released under a new label? As much as I love Elvis, can we have some sort of moratorium limiting the number of times an album can be remixed/remastered/repackaged?
They have a one line statment on Warren Zevon’s website saying they are working on releasing it soon, but come on, its been at least a couple years now and still no
re-issue of Warren’s great live album “Stand In The Fire.” Lets get on with it people!
Plus I would love to see re-issues of The Screaming Blue Messiahs “Gun Shy” and “Bikini Red”. Why these never became hits, I’ll never know.
