Which Diana Ross songs should the Idols sing?

Ross_l_1The American Idol finals begin tonight, and the theme is music from Diana Ross (both the solo and Supremes years). Jessica Shaw and I dish who should sing what (as well as Chris S. and Chris R. disrespecting Miss Ross! Le gasp!) on the latest edition of our Idolatry webcast (click here to see it), but I thought it would be fun to give all 12 contestants some last-minute song-choice advice. I’ll get the ball rolling, and you put your requests in the comments section below.

Gina Glocksen: "You Keep Me Hangin’ On"
Blake Lewis: "Upside Down"
Brandon Rogers: "Missing You"
LaKisha Jones: "The Boss"
Sanjaya Malakar: "Stop in the Name of Love"
Melinda Doolittle: "I’m Coming Out"
Chris Sligh: "Where Did Our Love Go"
Jordin Sparks: "Love Hangover"
Phil Stacey: "Ain’t No Mountain High Enough"
Haley Scarnato: "Swept Away" (oh, do watch the video!)
Chris Richardson: "Endless Love"
Stephanie Edwards: "Theme from Mahogany (Do You Know Where You’re Going To?)"

How about NONE!!! Going with someone like Diana Ross only reinforces the whole “karaoke” mentality. Let’s see them break out with more stuff like Pearl Jam, even though the heavy-set guy that sang “Jeremy” last week got booted. Simon calls everyone lounge acts…okay, well what song do you think a lounge act is more like to sing? “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” or “Rearview Mirror”?

  • Jeff Commings

Sanjaya should sing “I’m Coming Out,” not Melinda.

  • Fatima

I just want to take the time to say that I hope a stage light falls on Haley during rehersals today and that it kills her so Sabrina can come back. I’m so furious over the booting of Sabrina, that I have vowed to quit watching. I’m going to youtube Melinda in the morning and leave it at that.

  • K

OK, I’m definitely going to add that “Swept Away” video to reasons why a category for music videos should be added to the Emmys.

  • jennab

Michael, suddenly remembered who Sanjaya reminds me of…Mogly from Jungle Book!! And Phil is googly eyed python who will hopefully devour him.

  • Where Y’at, Dawlin’?

    Sanjaya should sing “Babylove”
Melinda already said she wants to do “Stop! In the Name of Love”
LaKisha could totally pull off “Ain’t no Mountain High Enough”
Haley could try “Do You Know Where You’re Going To” (answer:not a clue)
Don’t know about the rest, but the best bet for Phil and Chris R. would be to plead the 5th and not sing at all tonight.

  • Where Y’at, Dawlin’?

Stephanie would handle “Endless Love” quite nicely.

  • Murderpuss

    Sanjaya should sing “Muscles.”

  • Renie

I certainly hope to God that because Diana Ross’ latest album is of covers that the contestants get to redo any song she covered. Stick to her catalog.
    My picks:
Lakisha: Ain’t No Mountain High Enough
Melinda: Stop! In The Name Of Love
    Jordin: You Can’t Hurry Love
    Haley: I’m Still Waiting
    Gina: Babylove
    Stephanie: Love Hangover
Sanjaya: Muscles or Eating Alive or I’m Coming Out
Blake: You Keep Me Hangin’ On
    Chris Sligh: Upside Down
    Chris Richardson: Theme From Mahagony
    Phil: Missing You
    Brandon: Endless Love

Yes, Sabrina was miles ahead of Haley and should have made the top 12. Yes, Haley is to singing as ramen noodes are to gourmet cooking. But there were already 3 better singers filling the “R&B diva/belter” slots and she was just taking up room. She wasn’t going to win. Or even come close. Ultimately, she was unoriginal and forgettable. Move on.
I think tonight could be great, peppered with touches of “notsomuch” and “whatweretheythinking”. I kinda agree with Phantom that it’s going to be tough to break away from the campy/karaoke sound of the music when its …campy karaoke music at it’s best. I love Diana Ross music in general, but I think they are treading dangerous waters (heh – Sanjaya singing “I’m Coming Out.” Good one).

  • Tim

This is definitely one episode I can watch in fast-forward. Diana Ross! Ugh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Chris

I think someone should sing “One Night Only”.
Wait, faux Diana Ross doesn’t count. Oh well.

  • Ellipsian

Hahahaha! Slezak, you said “Stop In the Name of Love” to Sanjaya!
I second that motion: Please, Sanjaya. Stop. In the name of love, just stop. Seriously.

  • pitchmeister

Slezak – so disappointed – Sanjaya Malakar needs to sing “I’m coming out” – totally shocked that you did not give him that song. It would be a perfect ending to his Idol trip since he should be gone tomorrow.

  • Big Momma

I say Melinda should sing GOOD MORNIN HEARTACHE from Lady Sings the Blues. sanjaya should just sing FAR AWAY!!

  • daisyj

Love the idea of Melinda singing “I’m Coming Out”– perfect for her. Otherwise, I’m sorry to say that I’m not familiar enough with Ms. Ross’s oeuvre to participate here, but I do want to say that I don’t love these single-artist theme nights. The judges keep harping on how important song selection and “expressing who you are” are, and those are hard to do when you’re limited to a few dozen songs in a (generally) very specific style. On the other hand, anything that gets Haley off the show is fine with me.

  • Why?

Are you kidding me? Are you guys really still commenting on this? Who cares what crappy Diana Ross song a bunch of karaoke champions sing! My God, the whole world has gone Queer-Eye! Clint Eastwood is rolling over in his grave…and he’s not even dead yet!

  • K

I think that Diane Ross songs are truly a bad, bad choice for a theme. I’m not looking forward to it…. but can we give poor Sanjaya a bit of a break. I’m not a fan, but I can’t help but feel so bad for this guy when he’s constantly being made fun of. If anything, blame the judges that put the poor kid on when he clearly lacks stage presence.

  • Smoochie

Come on. You know Sanjaya should sing “I’m Coming Out”!!

  • Tish

This week is going to be dreadful.

  • Big Momma

Is Bon Jovi really going to appear?

  • Larry

YOU GUYS ARE CRAZY….WHO IS BETTER THAN “MISS ROSS” WHO HAS 18 NUMBER ONE HITS OVER THE LAST 45 YEARS…SHE IS AN INSPITATION TO US ALL !!!!!

  • Deeds

Haley could sing “Someday We’ll Be Together” and dedicate it to Antonella or “I’m Gonna Make You Love Me” and dedicate it to Simon. Sanjaya can sing “Why Do Fools Fall In Love” [with my singing] or “Aint No Mountain High Enough” [to avoid the awful sound of my singing].
Yes, I’m being cruel, but I just can’t help myself. And jennab — that is exactly what my 8 year old niece said when she saw Sanjaya. LOL

  • Phantom

Ms. Ross is a washed up primadonna. I’d rather listen to Simon and Seabiscuit trade farts…

  • Jakeem

Somebody with a big voice should sing “Everybody Rejoice” from “The Wiz.”

  • Derek

Ugh. When they have a theme week of just one artist, it really hinders people’s ability and makes the show pretty boring.
At least with the decade themes or #1 Hits, the contestants can choose something that fits their style better and overall, the show is more well-rounded instead of the same type of music for 2 hours.
Not everyone likes Diana Ross, no matter how many hits she had. And it makes the show seem very un-contemporary. Yes, she should be respected, but let the contestants mix it up or else things can get really awkward.

  • rockgolf

Lakisha: Touch Me In the Morning
Melinda: anything from Lady Sings the Blues – Good Morning Heartache is not a bad choice.
Sligh guy: My World Is Empty Without You
    Stephanie: Reflections
    Jordin: Chain Reaction

  • hancyn

A $100 says Sanjaya sings the theme from Mahogany.

  • Bexter

    Lakisha – The Happening
    Melinda – Ain’t nobody’s bizness if I do
Blake – Ease on down the road
    Stephanie – Good morning heartach
Sanjaya – Where did our love go
Chris – Why do fools fall in love

  • JUSTIN

Phil can get a lot of votes singing “Baby Love”. I really still dare Sanjaya to sing “I’m Coming Out”
Gina would rock Kim Wilde-style with “You Keep Me Hanging On”
