Have you seen Gap’s cutesy commercial for the ”new” Boyfriend Trouser starring Claire Danes and Patrick Wilson, the handsome fallen football hero from Little Children? (Although, let’s be real, can we call them new? I feel like every time I walk into that store I see some khakis like these, oh and I always see these too.) Turns out Angela Chase has been rediscovering her dance background in the last couple years, while Wilson is an accomplished Broadway performer, so it makes sense. This reminds me of those great Gap ads from back in the day that featured swing-dancing models and group singalongs to "Mellow Yellow" (look for then-unknowns Rashida Jones and Monet Mazur in this one). Unfortunately, however clever and charming an ad this may be (it was directed by Jonathan Datyon and Valerie Faris, the husband-wife directors of Little Miss Sunshine), it does not inspire me to buy these pants. (The baggy look isn’t very booty-friendly.) Still, it’s time to ask: Is Gap bringing their awesome ads back?
Gap ads are fun again!

I’m glad to see you mention this ad. I love it. It just oozes fun.
I saw this ad the other night and actually had to stop fast forwarding the Tivo and tooka tooka back to watch it. It makes me smile and I love it. I really hope the Gap stays with this advertising plan for a while.
I don’t particularly like the ad. Perhaps it is because I find Claire Danes so unlikeable.
I JUST was talking about this ad yesterday! And, like you, Regan, stopped my TiVo to check him–er, IT, out (and have done so at least five times since). Love it! Fun, cute, sexy…and let’s face it…Patrick Wilson in his boxers!?
‘Nuff said.
Focus on the Wilson, Elizabeth! Focus!
I liked this ad until I realized that it was Clare Danes. Alas, my distaste for her ruined it for me.
A post about a GAP ad! Now we turn it to you, PopWatch editors! Have you completely run out of things to talk about? Discuss!
I really liked the Jeans Take Shape campaign from last fall. Thumbs up for this ad too — at least it’s not Kirsten Dunst. And yummy cheers for Patrick Wilson.
I LOVE Patrick Wilson. The end.
Have you seen this one?
I’ve heard this ad is old in the US, but I don’t remember seeing it. Spike Jonez directed it.
Am I the only who think Claire Danes kind of bites as a dancer? There’s something really ungraceful about her.
i have to say, why is Patrick Wilson not a HUGE STAR by now… he is good looking, talented, and did I mention the good looking… totally ignored in Little Children, without him for Kate Winslet to share scenes, the film would have not been the same… anyway, Patrick Wilson Rules.
Awesome ad??? Gatoraid used this song already. Bad enough companies can’t come up with original theme songs, now they recycle music used in other ads. There is nothing awesome here.
Had no idea that was Claire Danes. Impressed I am…
Oh.. yeah i think the Gap is one a surge, I really liked that Audrey Hepburn commercial(the Andy Dick parody is NOT to be missed)
Lets hope Old Navy (whos commercials used to be so entertaining that you forgot about the fact that it was adverstising such crap) gets on the band wagon….
I loved those Gap commercials with the swinging and the singing…Remember the Christmas commercial with Left Eye (Give a Little Bit)? Also, Lena Horne and Steven Tyler and others had their own Gap jeans commercials where they sang in jeans. Those were great too. Bring on some more!
I love it!!!!! Claire Danes can dance like that????? WOW!!!!!!
Speaking of awesome, having you seen the print ad of this campaign with Chris O’Donnell…yowza!
Totally agree with Ellipsian, Mike and Eli. LOVE! Wilson ever since Angels in America. And I don’t understand all the Claire Danes hating. I thought she was adorable. Fun ad. Still don’t need any khakis.
BTW! The Will Kemp one was my favorite. Please bring him back. The Mellow Yellow ones were creepy.
I’ve never understood why people like Claire Danes. She’s so milquetoast and half the time she seems bored with herself. Patrick Wilson was a very disappointing Ralph from the Phantom of the Opera movie. So will I be buying boyfriend pants? Not so much.
Is it just me, or does seeing Claire Danes in oversized, unfitted pants make the boyfriend pants look slouchy, messy, and unappealing? The boy wins this round…
Absolutely LOVED Wilson in Phantom of the Opera, so I automatically love the ad!
Oh, and Jane, you criticize Patrick Wilson, but you can’t even get his character’s name right! It’s Raul, not Ralph!
I don’t care about the pants, but I always watch cuz Patrick Wilson is *haaaaawt*! Just like the Jack in the Box milkshake commercials…I’d like some fries with that shake, please!
Here’s the link to the Andy Dick parody. It’s pretty great.
meh.
m-e-h.
When I first saw it the other night, I thought, is that Claire Danes? It was a different side of her.
It’s super cute. And Claire has a nice arabesque, jumpy as it may be.
Who cares about the ads anymore…The Gap needs to reduce their prices! It’s not Banana Republic Too.
I love this commercial! Really cute.
