Since my previous post on the video of how orange crayons are made got such a hearty response, I’m recommending another Sesame Street treasure: "Me and My Llama," in which a young, quasi-mulleted girl (you’re sure it’s a full-on mullet, but then the coat comes off!) takes her llama to the dentist. Her llama to the dentist. Thanks to PopWatchers Little Lamb and Rebekah for bringing back to mind one of the strangest segments ever:
I still have a lot of the same reactions I did as a kid: Where are her parents? They should fix her teeth instead! Does anyone at Sesame Street care that "me and my llama" is grammatically incorrect? [EMBARRASSING DISCLOSURE AHEAD] I’m pretty sure that at no point did I wonder "Why does she have a llama?" How is that a question I overlooked? Did I assume that if I lived in a big city like her, I too would have a llama? ANNIE!!! GOD. I distinctly remember being at the dentist myself, and peering over my shoulder whenever I was alone in the room to see if there was maybe a llama in the hallway. That’s messed up. And I wonder why I’m weird.
I love the dentist’s voiceover at the end — turn it way up, and you can hear one man saying "It’s a pretty good llama!" and then another saying "Yeah!" Like yeah, no big deal, we’re just two grown men agreeing that the llama whose teeth we just massacred was of fine quality. God I love Sesame Street.

Watching this now I can vividly remember seeing it as a kid. It now seems completely insane but when I was a kid I found nothing strange about this segment. It seemed perfectly reasonable that the nice city llama would need to go to the dentist. What kind of world was I living in that that seemed like an ordinary thing!
OMG! I totally remember that song, and thinking that was the coolest song ever! Now I can’t get it out of my head. Me and my llama, me and my llama,…
OMG!! This just made my night. I just announced to my husband that need to start watching Sesame Street again (I am 28). This is simply the most riduculous/best/insane thing EVER.
love this one but does anyone remember this little tidbit http://www.foldedspace.org/weblog/2006/04/sesame_street_video_clips.html with Bert and Ernie???
Okay, the clip I was talking about was “Artwork by Ernie” (hilarious — the one I remember 2nd to the crayon one)
I forgot that was a link to a whole throng of Sesame Street clips (for all you lovers out there…) Enjoy!
Anyone remember this clip? It creeped me out as a kid, and from what I hear, I wasn’t the only one. Enjoy!
3 things: 1) It actually looks like this llama is hers. She looks at it quite lovingly. 2) Don’t llamas, like, spit disgusting things out of their mouths? 3) They usually knock dogs out to clean their teeth; seems like it would be rather stressful for an animal, with all those noises and whatnot.
I didn’t grow up in North America, so can’t traipse down the Sesame Street memory lane. However, this post did remind me of my favourite internet link of all time: The Llama Song. http://www.albinoblacksheep.com/flash/llama.php. Llama, Llama, duck! Getting that one out of your head is impossible. Makes me laugh every time.
you could make posting ‘vintage sesame street clips’ a regular thing–excellent!
Please make this a regular feature. Can’t wait to see what else you find!!!
I’d forgotten about her until you mentioned her, but now I can recall every strange detail without even watching the video. I also wondered why she had a llama in the city, but not why she had a llama.
I remember this!!! I also don’t recall thinking it was weird that some girl living in the city would have a dentist.
As for classic Sesame Street (before Elmo took over the joint), on YouTube I found a clip of “the Beetles” singing “Letter B” and Bob and some hippie muppets singing “Goodmorning Starshine” Ahh the memories.
Thanks to whoever posted the one with the orange singing Carmen. I had forgotten that one too. The eyelashes used to give me the willies. Is it just me or was Sesame Street way cooler back then?
Does anyone remember the crazy-hippie like muppett singing about some …none..all!
“and all the brothers and all the sisters and all the people and some…none …all…”
I bust out wiht this occaisonallya nd my husband thinks I need medication but I know it really happened.
I think the same muppet did a Near…far thing too
Holy Mary, sweet mother of God!!!! I have been telling people about this clip for about 30 years – always singing the song in case that refreshed their memories – and no one, I mean NO ONE has ever known what I was talking about… a llama at the dentist??? Thank you EW for making me a believer again!!!!
~p
Sweet Jesus! This is amazing. As a child, I can vividly remember bouncing around my house – singing this song ten, twelve times a day. Like others, I’ve always told people about this song – although it’s absurbist nature prevents people from believing me. But no longer – thanks EW! Thanks youtube! My childhood lives on!
I love this! I totally remember the coat coming off too. And I didn’t wonder why she had a llama either!!!
OMFG! I just had so many crazy flashbacks when I watched that!
It’s amazing what hides in the deep recesses of the mind!
I heart llamas. Does anyone remember the little animated clip with the song that went “That’s about the size, right beneath your eyes, that’s about the size of it”? It was sort of sweet and sad. Sesame Street seems to have lost the sort of sad and wistful vibe that made some of those clips really memorable. I tuned in recently with my 2-year-old and it’s totally sassy and dumbed down. >sigh<
I actually remembered the song as soon as I saw the title of the clip! Another favorite of mine: “I got a new way to walk (walk, walk)” with some dancing muppet pigs. I have no idea what it was supposed to be about but the song was super-catchy.
After watching the “How Crayons are Made” clip… I was inspired to go to the Crayola Factory this weekend… only to find out they stopped giving Factory tours 10 years ago! I was so disappointed. The video was way better.
Um, yeah, this is so surreal. Does anyone else remember the very creepy “Milk” song, or how about the “Falling Baker” who could never deliver his pies properly.
Wow. I watched Sesame Street when I was a kid back in the ’70’s allll the time. And I’ve NEVER seen this freakshow before. Where does this girl keep her llama in the city??
Annie- you didn’t warn me about the gross close-ups of llama dentistry. Ick! Those teeth were freaky.
Kevin, I used to run and hide when the baker fell down with all of his pies. Bizarre childhood neurosis, I guess. Fortunately, I must have missed the llama the first time around.
Hey Kevin– go to YouTube and search “milk crisis”. Good stuff. It’s very, very trippy-late-’70s. I have to warn you, though, that if you do you’ll walk around for WEEKS going “Milk! MI-ILK! Milk!”
I watched SS faithfully, and now my children do too, and I have NEVER seen this!! But an earlier post about the crayons was right- they still show that on all the time. The one I liked (that they still show) is the doll house with the two little girls and then the real cat comes through and destroys the place. Sweet song, too. Anyone???
This is my faaavorite SS clip, well, maybe, it’s hard to pick a favorite!
yipyipyipyip uhhh huh, uhh huh!!
HA!! Thank You So Much for Posting This! For Years ever once in a while this tune would pop in my head and I would sing it. Everyone looked at me like I was crazy because they had never heard of this before. I finally decided to look it up and I found it here- A-HA!! I Love it!!
OMG! I am so glad to have found this! I too have been singing this for years and getting strange looks. I’m so glad I’m not the only one who remembers this! I can’t believe how strange it seems watching it now…I didn’t think a thing of her a) having a llama in the city or b) taking it to the dentist when I was a kid. I’ve never forgotten the song, either. Strange.
