Who should star in 'Star Trek XI'?

Trek_lLet’s beam down to the planet of Irresponsible Speculation for a short spell, shall we? IGN.com claims to know who’s on Paramount’s shortlist to play the leads in the forthcoming Star Trek XI, a prequel set during the young Kirk and Spock’s days at Starfleet Academy. According to IGN, Matt Damon (as long rumored) is the top choice to step into William Shatner’s boots to play Kirk, while the producers would like to see Adrien Brody in Leonard Nimoy’s role as the young Spock, and Gary Sinise (pictured, left) as Dr. McCoy, originally played by DeForest Kelley (at right). Also, IGN says, the filmmakers want Lost‘s Daniel Dae Kim to play Sulu and James McAvoy (The Last King of Scotland) to play Scotty.

Just so you know, EW reporters say Paramount is denying these casting rumors. Still, now that the studio has finally made an official announcement that Lost guru J.J. Abrams will be directing the film as well as writing and producing it, why not weigh in on casting? My two cents: Damon is too old to play a cadet Kirk (in fact, he’s older than Shatner was when he started playing the already-seasoned captain in the 1960s TV series). And McAvoy seems too young to play Scotty; if Paramount must have a Scottish actor, why not Ewan McGregor? (Remember, Scotty and McCoy clearly had a few years on Kirk.) I think the rest of the rumored choices, however, are great. How ’bout y’all? Who would you cast in Star Trek: Muppet Babies?

Matt Damon would ruin Star Trek once and for all. Let’s hope that doesn’t come about.
And frankly, I’m surprised to hear these bigger names thrown around. Star Trek in the past has casted up talent.
Of those listed, I think Sinise would nail McCoy. The others seem circumspect just to get some known names.

Maybe it is OC nostalgia, but I was hoping they would skew the film even younger and go with Ben Mackenzie and Adam Brody as Kirk and Spock. They had such great chemistry on the tv show, and it would be so interesting to see the two of them have to play opposite the characters they played on the show. Seth as emotionless and Ryan as the emotional one.

Zachary Quinto (Sylar from “Heroes”) as Spock.

Something is fishy here. If the point is to have all the characters in their Academy days, then shouldn’t the actors under consideration be, say, under 25 years old?

I still find it hard to believe that anyone would take an odd numbered Trek movie seriously in any shape way or form. All the odd numbered Treks were bad! The best of all Treks was Khan, and none have come close to the magic since then (okay, 4 and 8 were also pretty good).
The idea of 30 something aged actors playing characters who are in their early 20’s is even lamer than another odd numbered trek movie. My predictions tend to be spotty, but rest assured that NOTHING short of the return of Kahn will make this one good.

Matt Damon is a big no! I agree that the actors should be much younger than those listed. Remember, this is to take place in their days at the Academy. The new Kirk should look younger than Shatner did in the original series

I say reunite the entire Dreamgirls cast for Star Trek XI. Eddie Murphy as Kirk, Jamie Foxx as Spock and the other guy as Bones. You could call it Soul Trek. It would dazzle!

    I’m a doctor, not a casting director!
This all sounds like a bad idea to me, anyway.

how about zach braff as kirk and the dude who played superman as spock. What about uhora

I think “nathan” is onto something–taking one cast and replacing it with another. How about the Grey’s cast? McDreamy as Kirk, Sandra Oh as Spock, Ellen P as Zulu, Isaih W as Bones-I’m a doctor, not a homophobe, damnit! And the beautiful Chandra Wilson as “I’m givin’ it all I’ve got” Scotty!

Why do we need Star Trek:the Animal House Years?

  • Mad Max

How bout the entire cast of “Veronica Mars” no not really, just a shout out to a really good show!!

Anika Noni Rose as Uhura. Jessica Biel as Chapel. Mark Indelicato as a very, very young Chekov. James Purefoy as Scotty. You can’t top Sinise as McCoy. Michael Rosenbaum as Spock. And Leonardo DiCaprio as Kirk. (But Damon works for me, too).
And the Grey’s Anatomy cast switch: that idea is just plain stupid.
