Your Oscar Fashion Pool

Mirren_lAccording to my new favorite blog, Helen Mirren announcedlast night that she will be wearing a dress by French designer ChristianLacroix to the Oscars on Sunday (Lacroix is the man responsible for UmaThurman’s awkward, bunched up, Swiss-Miss Oscar outfit from 2004, which was lovely… if youhad your eyes closed). Mirren (photographed two weeks ago arriving at the British Academy Awards) will still have to answer that red carpet staple,"What are you wearing?" a jillion or so times, but I think it will befun trying to guess what kind of number she’ll don for the ceremony (check outLacroix’s most recent spring couture collection here). While we’re at it, wemight as well round out the list of who will wear whom on Oscar night.

Jennifer Hudson, the other likely winner, is getting"styled" by André Leon Talley, Vogue‘s editor-at-large. He says that Hudson has already picked the dress, which is a "secret," but my guess is that she willprobably wear a sleek, curve-hugging dress like the kind she’s been wearing allawards season. Donna Karan or Versace might be the lucky ones to dress her.

Boring, but true: Cate Blanchett will most likely be wearing Armani Privé (shewore Valentino when she won her first Oscar for The Aviator). Penélope Cruz will probably wear a romantic Chanel Haute Couture gown — they’ve have been attachedat the hip this season. Kate Winslet has the straightforward, glamorous-yet-simplecolumn look down, so it’s doubtful she’ll stray from her formula. Rinko Kikuchiwill probably wear something that’s short, funky, and/or fluffy, and I thinkBetsey Johnson is her fashion soul mate. Adriana Barraza will wear a mature gownthat has a hint of sexy, but not too much — Oscar de la Renta, perhaps? AbigailBreslin is definitely going to wear a cute little girl dress (I’ll suggest MarcJacobs) with a cardigan on top.

Finally, there’s Meryl Streep. Meryl is goingto be a guaranteed hot mess on the red carpet, because she always lookslikeshe’s wearing a lumpy potato sack, and has bad hair to boot. I wouldlove for her to channel some Miranda Priestly and come out in somethingform-fitting and gorgeous, looking like the bomb. Wouldn’t that be nice?

What do you think, PopWatchers? Which designers’frocks should the nominees choose to wear to this year’s ceremony? Whowill be on the best and worst-dressed lists on Monday?

I must say, I really couldn’t disagree with you more about Meryl Streep’s definity as a “hot mess” on the red carpet. She, in my opinion, is always well turned out, though I wasn’t crazy about her Golden Globes outfit this year. I think she always dresses appropriately and elegantly, which is more than can be said about many of Hollywood’s female stars (Sienna Miller, Olson twins, Beyonce- I’m looking at you).

Meryl is indeed a hot mess at times – I thought her Golden Globes dress was one Grecian urn shy of a fountain. I can guarantee that Helen Mirren will look elegant as always. And Beyonce will likely forget to wear a slip, if the Grammys are any indication.

Meryl looked great at the Oscars last year in the purple Vera Wang dress she wore. I’m a little skeptical about Helen in Christian Lacroix – it’s either going to be really amazing or a huge disaster. I don’t see it anywhere between.
I can’t wait to see Jennifer Hudson’s dress – this is her moment and she deserves to look absolutely amazing.

Cate Blanchett will look great in anything.

I am excited to see Helen Mirren, Penelope Cruz, and my girl crush, Salma Hayek (she always has her two ‘assets’ primely situated).
And of course, I cannot wait to see my girl Jennifer Hudson. She has managed to look elegant, sexy, and appropriate throughout this awards season. I love me some Andre Leon Talley, so he can ‘style’ me anyday. And mark my words, if I hear any fashion magazine/entertainment website/E! channel talking-heads give J.Hud anything but raves (ie. she’s too ‘fleshy’, needs Spanx), I will personally be punching some folks in their faces (in my mind). We need more talented, beatiful, voluptuous woman in entertainment.
    Fin.

I’m looking forward to seeing Kate Winslet and Cate Blanchett. They always look stunning. And one little Kate and Leo hug please? Reliving my Titanic days.

Word is that Meryl will not be attending this ceremony b/c of knee surgery…so we won’t get to see her “hot mess” outfit after all.

Looking forward to Salma and Cate, getting ready to laugh at Sienna.

And how hilarious is it that Beyoncés MOM dresses her like that! I don’t have a daughter but I just can’t imagine sending her out the door in the cotoure equivalent of pasties and a g-string!

    People…Helen Mirren is HOTT!

  • Myma

Wow. Helen Mirren looks fabulous. Just stunning.

If anyone knows the color of Tipper Gore’s dress, please post on here! It’s the tie-breaker for our Oscar pool at work (I work for a political org). I’m not above a little inside info!
