The award for best text messaging goes to... :-P

Leo_lAs you’re putting the finishing touches on the ballot for your Oscar pool this weekend, give a thought to not only what movie you think will win for Best Picture, but which one you would want to take home that little gold statuette. For me and my unlimited texting plan, that movie would be The Departed. Whereas a movie like Babel telegraphs almost every last plot point (I mean, no one would have thought that anything would go wrong with sneaking those kids into Mexico, would they? Please!), and Little Miss Sunshine‘s characters feel RAZR-thin, Scorsese’s latest uses a clever device as a clever device to actually push the plot along. If you don’t recall how big a part text messaging played for DiCaprio (pictured) and Damon’s characters, give that new DVD a spin. For my money ($5 to the cheese fondue party I will be attending), none of the other movies nominated had an aspect to them that hit so close to home and made the experience of watching it so believable.

Are there things in this year’s Oscar crop that make certain movies hit close to home for you? In lieu of sending me a text, just post a response below (emoticons encouraged, but optional).

That’s funny that you say that, because that’s the reason why my boyfriend didn’t really like The Departed. He said it was too “cell-phony” and he couldn’t get excited about whether someone’s text was going to make it on time.

I liked The Departed. The only thing distracting to me (although the text messaging thing stood out…I can’t believe no-one noticed they were doing it) was that Damon, DiCaprio, and Deniro all played kind of stereotypical parts for themselves. Damon as the straitlaced detective, there’s a stretch huh. I think it would’ve been cool to see the movie with Damon and Dicaprio in the alternate roles. Good film, brings back old school.

With all this new technology, such as text message, internet, and GPS, I’m surprised that there hasn’t been a movie or show wrapped around the hazards of these technologies.
I love to text, I was telling my partner the other day at a resturant (eating while texting – I know, I know)that the cell phone isn’t for talking anymore but texting.

I am glad to see that I was not the olny person who did not like the Departed. I did notice that texting played a big part in the movie, but wonder just how realistic that would be for criminals to create a paper trail like that, esp a 70 y/o like Jacks charactor – text messages can be printed out under subpeona, and one company until recently included the actaul text msg in the billing detail. BTW if you want to cheat on your spouse the cell phone is your worst enemy. I used billing records all the time in court.

I love going to boston and shopping at Newberry Street, so I relate to The Departed the most.
Then again The Queen hit real close to home for me. Because I go hunting for Stag all the time, and well, I have the same exact rifle the royal family does. and I was once stuck inside a cave with a bunch of Japanese tourists, so really, the best picture oscar should go to letters from iwo jima. Of course the above could have all been heroin induced hallucinations in which case, I should vote for Little Miss Sunshine. But I do get accussed of sometimes just carrying on some meaningless Babble… which is why I say… BABEL will win.

Ive seen The Departed twice and can honestly say that it is now ranked number 2 in my favourite films of all time list, beaten by scorseses absolute masterpiece Goodfellas. the man is a genius, the best film director ever, nominated 6 times and never won. He should already have at least 3 statuettes sitting on his mantlepiece. The Academy cannot snub the man again surely
