John Waters is lookin’ for a little action. Or so he says about A Date with John Waters, his fabulous new Valentine’s mix released by New Line Records. Well, if the oddball filmmaker’s playful yet creepy ”come hither” look that appears on the album’s cover is any indication, suffice it to say I don’t think you’ll be in for a sexy time with this one. (Did I ruin it for you? My apologies.) But the journey through Waters’ expansive and scattered record collection seems like a fun purchase anyway. The album ranges from vintage cutie-pie picks by the likes of Patience and Prudence and the New Yorkers, and funnies like John Prine and Iris DeMent’s ”In Spite of Ourselves,” to obscure titles that border the truly bizarre like Mink Stole’s ”Sometimes I Wish I Had a Gun.” The theme song from the deeply depressing film Imitation of Life is also a curious add but a beautiful love song when it comes down to it, and Ray Charles’ ”Night Time is the Right Time” just reminds me of the Huxtable family’s lip-synching extravaganza (haha, that Rudy, I tell ya, aha). Ahem, anyways.
Waters’ eclectic nod to the day of amour prompts the question: What’s the craziest thing you’ve ever put on a mixtape for a Valentine? The weirdest love song I could think of is Blonde Redhead’s ”Equus” (and no, it’s not an ode to Hairy Potter.) How’s about you?

Hmmmm, how about ‘Used to Love her’ by Guns ‘N’ Roses? The next line is: But I had to kill her. I think that would spoil the mood….
