Today is Rick Astley’s 41st birthday, and in his honor, we’re gonna go back — 20 years back, in fact — to a time the deep-voiced dude ruled the charts with his video for "Never Gonna Give You Up." If the clip were a MasterCard commercial, the script would go something like this: "One pair of Ray Ban knockoffs: $5. Nine cans of AquaNet: $39.27. Afternoon banquet hall rental: $425.00. Choreography from low-rent dance studio owned by a friend of Astley’s mom: Priceless."
Anyhow, after you watch Astley shake what his mama gave him in the clip below, be sure to give the birthday boy your gift of haiku in the comments section. Here’s mine:
dream idol guest judge?
it would take a strong, strong man
to rock that bouffant

You only sold time
to Stock Aiken Waterman
your soul is intact

I guess Slezak does know that this song was used in the Hollywood rounds on AI a few years back. And I will fully admit this is on my mp3 player.
Bad white boy dance but
Even after 20 years
This song still kicks ass.
Why would American Idol be worth mentioning at all in this post?
Maria, your haiku said it all!!!!!!
Ricardo querido!!!! Hace años en una FM Argentina, dieron un día la noticia de tu muerte. Muchos lloramos tu despedida y hoy me entero de que estás vivo, con 41 años!!! Viva la vida y la resurrección de Rick!!
Now that I know Nick Lowe’s song, “All Men Are Liars”, I’ve come to associate Rick Astley with that.

stop with the haiku’s.
its not funny anymore.
if it ever was.
Is he still terrible?
If I remember correctly, there was a radio station in NY that spoofed his songs because two of them sounded similar. The spoof chorus went like this:
“‘Cause this song’s exactly the same as my last, but only the words have been changed. If this song gets boring, it’ll sell once again, ’cause it’s the same song, but just rearranged.”
Even if he is kitchy he’s a guilty pleasure.
Who knew Conan could sing?
Now we know who John Steven’s real father is.
I was going to hate you for bringing up Rick Astley, then I was reminded of Bill Hicks’s “We Live in a World. . . ” bit from Dangerous. And I smiled a little.
Thanks for reminding me how good it feels to hate Rick Astley and his ilk.
Now I really feel old.
i’ve missed you so much
i’ve been nostalgic lately
