In case you missed it (Super Bowl edition)

Categories: Music

My coworker Helin Jung and I can’t seem to agree over Prince’s halftime performance. She wasn’t impressed (”It didn’t fully illuminate his majesty,” she says), but I dug the wailing guitar solos, the lovely color scheme of his suit, and even the hair wrap (dude has a perm and it was raining — I’m not hatin’). Besides the odd choice of covers (The Foos’ ”Best of You” was… special), I thought he held it down. One thing we can agree on is how awesome his Purple Highness was in his Super Bowl press conference. The highlight:

Prince: "Contrary to rumor, I’d like to take a few questions right now."

A reporter: "Prince, how did you feel about performing…"

Hit it! Another fantastic set.

His name is Prince, he’s fabulous, and he does what he wants.

Prince is no longer the talent he once was. Why do people continue to put this mediocre “artist” on a pedestal? (American Idol, Super Bowl, etc.) The Super Bowl half time shows are a snore anyway.

  • whatever

I thought the half time show was more boring than it usually is…Prince?? I understand why they don’t want young stars up there…another “wardrobe malfunction” but i think they need to find an artist who fully bridges the generation gap….

  • sam

Yawn. The typical overblown, self-important, boring Prince. He must have really good public relations people to make so many people buy into his “royalness.”

  • Kiki

Would Prince’s cover of “Best of You” come from the fact that the Foo Fighter’s covered his “Darling Nikki”?

  • Mike

I thought it was the best halftime show in recent memory — which isn’t saying much, I know. Still, given the constraints (time, general public apathy toward halftime shows), I thought Prince rocked pretty hard. At least this much is true: I can’t think of many guitarists out there right now who can touch him.

You people are nuts! Prince was awesome! He puts on a great show every time. Thanks for the link to the press conference.

Did you hear him? Did you listen? He was GREAT! I can understand not liking that kind of music, but to deny he’s not a complete master of it? As far as fear of wardrobe malfunctions with “younger artists”, have you checked Ms. Jackson’s driver’s license? Talent, not age matters.

Sometimes I take an artist for granted after a long period of time but then I see such a mind-blowing performance as this one and remember why they are as successful as they are. I want to see Prince perform live so bad now…

PRINCE ROCKED THE HOUSE! HE WAS AWESOME

  • Richard

How was it that in the pouring rain, Prince’s face did not appear at all wet, even in HD? Was he wearing some sort of water repelling makeup?
Props to Prince for an entertaining performance.

  • Luke

So what about a link to the Oprah and Letterman clip IN CASE IS MISSED THAT (too) Super Bowl Edition?
Where’s the link to that, Sophia? xoxo

I thought he under-utilized the huge stage that he had — he should have had more, and flashier, dancers. I also thought his song choices were on the slow, depressing side — the Superbowl’s a PARTY! He shoulda been rockin out with ‘Kiss’ and some more upbeat material.

Prince was fabulous! That brother violently threw his mic stand down and made the audience sing for him…and they did quite well. You have to have bad-a$$ status for the audience to get that into it.
…and “Purple Rain” in the rain??? I almost fell out of my chair.

  • Stephanie

Kiki, I knew that I recognized that song. I think that he was thanking the Foo’s for covering his Nikki.

  • Jen H

That was absolutely the best half-time show I’ve ever seen …. almost made me forget that the usual acts stink it up all over the field. I think his performance proved his enduring legend status. He was ALL that!!!

  • Chris

His voice and guitar sounded AMAZING!!! Best Half-time show I have seen in a very long time, if ever. Thank goodness I didn’t have to listen to Areosmith again!

  • B.T.

Obviously the best halftime ever and that press conference was almost as good. Prince is straight-up bad-azz and I don’t think there is anyone out there who can touch him. Dude can play anything (rock, funk, jazz, punk, blues, soul, r&b) and play it well.

  • Doubleh

I am a lifelong Prince fan and I was disappointed. Where was the new material? Not even a peep from the most recent album! I could have used a little Lolita myself.

  • Joe C

Prince proved again that he is the best performer out there. Long live his Royal badness!

  • tony

Sam, Whatever and Snarky you are all young fools. If you can’t appreciate real talent sod off.
