'O.C.' Deathwatch: Kirsten used to have a perm and other sundries

Filed under: Television and tagged:

Oc_l_2Yes! Flashbacks episode! We’ve seen a few snippets of what Newport life was like pre-’03, but tonight’s (excluding the painful high school Kiki-Jimmy exchanges) rocked. Everyone was wondering how Sandy and Kirsten met, so that was genius. Summer Jr. and a new version of Seth Jr. were adorable, and I totally thought Taylor Jr. was Marissa until she revealed that she’d completed a school assignment. (I do wish Marissa’d been there, too, just to say something annoying.) And Kirsten Jr. had an abortion, which we sort of knew because in season 1 she went all "get an abortion" on Theresa. I’m glad they finally addressed that. No Caleb Jr., unfortunately, but we’ll always have this.

Even though the adults’ younger versions were different actors, the fab four did manage to glam it up ’80s-style to pose for an awesome New Parents! photograph (pictured), which we’ve probably seen before but I don’t remember. It’s just too hard! Jimmy’s ‘stache! Julie’s bangles! (Is that Julie?) This also marks the last time Seth and Marissa spent time together before sophomore year. Aw, look at how Sandy’s gazing down at his progeny. The PowerBrows command so much eye-area attention that he doesn’t even have to look at the camera. He does that a lot, come to think of it. Work it PG!

So, Valentine’s Day, two weeks early. Okay. Still creeped out by Frank, so even though the ep was titled "The Case of the Franks," I’m going to imagine that it refers only to the corn dogs and the premise that Julie went home and ate an entire case of frank(furter)s after realizing she’s actually not in love with this douche. The only part I liked about their interactions—even though it didn’t totally make sense—was when Frank justified his love for Julie by telling Ryan "We’re just from the same world." It was a subtle but direct reference to one of the first things Marissa sighed dismissively to Ryan after he moved to Newport: "We’re just from different worlds." Isn’t it ironic? Not really. Frank sucks.

Also in Romance, a mall-kiosk psychic (I loved when Seth called herout for not charging for services, because we were all wondering) toldSummer she’d ultimately leave Seth for "George," which turned out to bean activist group called G.E.O.R.G.E., who just had to have Summerafter visiting her new website about sea otters, which gets 8,000 hitsa day. ALL OF THIS IS BELEIVABLE! Ha. I did like how Summer decidedthat maybe Seth isn’t her "only destiny," and his surprisingly maturereaction. The kids are growing up.

This entry never ends. If I refuse to end it, will the show go on?And in the spirit of self-reflection, that whole Zach era? "Who were wekidding"?

So, why are we supposed to route for Frank and Juile? Bullit was funny, a good role model for Kaitlin, and a freakin’ billionaire! Frank is so unlikeable and it makes me mad that Julie picked him! But the rest of the episode was classic O.C.–it didn’t make much sense, but I believed it anyway!

I was disappointed that Sandy Jr. didn’t have the power ‘brows. What age did those pop up?
Also, this ep was a million times more enjoyable than previous ones simply b/c of the lack of Che. And why are we wasting time with flashbacks? There is only 4 eps left (3 now) to wrap up this whole crazy story and we waste time w/ flashbacks and subplots that do nothing for that (i.e past abortion).

Another hilarious OC Deathwatch, thanks Annie! My favorite part of the episode was definately seeing Leo from Veronica Mars play the young Sandy Cohen! He was such a sweetie! I agree about Frank and was surprised that Taylor would be so kind to the man who made her boyfriend’s childhood so miserable.

how….HOW could you not mention the glory of the Team Bullet/Team Frank battle? things like this are where the OC really excels. the team bullit t-shirt? Classic.

so sad this is ending. each week is like a slow death.
loved tonight’s episode. the flashbacks were great.
If Seth and Summer don’t end up together….?? boo.

Did anyone else catch the chronological errors? When Kirsten showed Summer the prom picture of her and Jimmy, she explained her perm by saying “Top Gun was big back then.” But, then she meets Sandy at Berkley when he gives her a Mondale/Ferraro button. Top Gun came out in ’86, but the M/F campaign was 1984. I know it’s picky, but things like that irk me.

Yeah they never really gave us a reason to root for Frank. They didn’t have to time to give us one with all those silly flashbacks taking up time. Only 3 episodes left according to FOX.com. We need more present, less past.

TEAM BULLET! Julie Cooper should not end up with Hercules. Boo.

  • Kristin

My favorite part of the episode was when the story about Justin Timberlake was on the news and the anchor commented on how somehow the Bait Shop manages to get such big name acts. FAN-TASTIC!
I’ll miss The OC and its ability to make fun of itself.

It really saddens me to know that this in fact WILL be the final season. I’ve been following the show since day one and this is hands down my favorite season! and although im not a fan of the romance between julie cooper and ryan’s father, it’s good to see that julie has chosen “love” rather than money.

  • mike

So Ryan forgave his father when? I’ll be sorry to see this show go, but, it will ease the logjam of Thursday night.

I loved these episode!!!! And stop Complaning and start enjoing the last moments of the OC B-coz in 3 weeks it will be gone 4 ever!!!! I loved the Flashbacks!!!!! i’m not sure what kool-aid y’all have been drinking, but i would rate last night’s episode as one of the worst in the OC history… and i’m an uber fab!
yes, it did have its moments of brilliance — the kiosk stand, the zach reference — but overall, it made me want to weep in frustration. why is the show resorting to such schlock, especially after it redeemed itself for season four.
i think the only fix to last night’s blunder is to find marissa cooper and kill her off again.
