Ik, I am not sure if my city stopped this or not but after 9/11 New York used to have police practice runs for bombs. Cities should have these checks all the time.
As a Bostonian, born and bred, I have to say that I disagree with the majority of the folks on here (and agree with Ep Sato) and need to defend my hometown. This is a city with an extremely delicate transportation infrastructure and where 9/11 started. We take threats seriously. Yes, the boxes were essentially LiteBrites…at night. During the day they are black boxes hidden under major bridges and overpasses of the city with no labelling other than a cartoon character unrecognizable to anyone other than fans. I think the combination of media frenzy and hightened terror alerts that Bush thrives on made this into something it didn’t need to be. But these guys could have gotten a permit, they could have warned the city they were doing it and they could have at least pretended to be humbled after being arrested. At most I think they should get community service. But I think the obvious overall punishment needs to go all the way to the top of the food chain at Turner. And as for those of you calling out the person who reported it…what’s wrong with you? What if it HAD been something and they didn’t report it? What would you all be saying then?
I’ve been reading the posts and I’m shocked that everyone is saying that we overreacted to this. Some of you get it, but most of you don’t. I think you should put yourself into our shoes. If 9/11 started in your city, if your city had one of the biggest ports on the east coast, and if your city had as many hospitals and colleges as Boston does. I don’t think you’d be so quick to say where’s your sense of humor, it was just a joke? If God forbid it had been a real threat, and the authorities did nothing and lets say at 5:30 on a Friday night all of these things went off and thousands of people died, you would all be saying that Boston still hasn’t learned it’s lesson after 9/11. There was a major threat in the UK that same day, that was stopped. What if these boxes where in someway involved in that. A world wide terror strike. Maybe I’m just overly sensitive to this, because I knew people on one of the planes and my god-mother worked in the WTC.
Maybe is they Meatwad on the Lite-Brites, Boston wouldn’t be in such a panic?
With all of the hoopla, I’m actually kind of annoyed that the show is getting so much press. I don’t quite understand how the show would be entertaining, funny, or even sensical to anyone other than an extremely high 14-21 year old male.
This incident has shown the country and world that the combined IQ of the city officials(especially the mayor), the BPD, and the citizens who actually elected these tools to office in Boston, don’t add up to Curt Shilling’s ERA. No wonder the terrorist’s chose Logan Airport. 2 other comments stick in my head. NINE OTHER CITIES INCLUDING NEW YORK DIDN’T SEE ANYTHING WRONG WITH THESE.
THESE AD’S HAVE BEEN UP FOR TWO WEEKS.
I HOPE Boston is angry….because YOUR the laughing stock of the country.
P.S If anyone incited panic it was the authorities who went to the press after the were humiliated by two stoners.
The fact is that reguardless if it is a Lite Brite Sign, a Connect Four Board or a Hungry, Hungry Hippo, city police need to do checks in open facilities all the time. This is a brilliant advertisment because it is bringing pleanty of attention. However, I think that the “Up Yours Boston” shirts that are being sold is just taking it a bit too far.
first of all in a post 911 world you cant go about putting ominous black boxes in crowded city streets. rent a billboard. it had the affect of pulling a fire alarm basically, and not only are the authorates obligated to check these out the cities that didnt were in the wrong, not boston. do you realize it was a major shiete(hows it spelled) in the middle east and lots of people were dieing the day they flashed up these flashy board things. its a box flipping people off thats supposed to make sense. of course people thought it was a bomg. and if it was thousands of people in 9 other cites would have been toasted. their behavior on their arainment(?) and at the press conference was arrogant. not one apology. society is losing sighht of whats funny and what is a mistake.
