Da Bears are playing in da Super Bowl dis weekend! Yay! In honor of the team’s first trip to the big game in 21 years, it’s time for us to revel in this classic from the SNL hall of fame. (Ah, Gad bless ya, Smigel.)
Yes, this is the first time the Monsters of the Midway have played for the NFL championship since the recurring "Bill Swerski’s Superfans" sketch injected the phase "Da Bears" into the lexicon in 1991. Gotta love it. Wait—you do have to love it, right? I ask because I’ve noticed a solid dose of anti-Bears vitriol on this here blog, and that makes me wonder: Can you be a fan of wee Peyton Manning’s Colts and still love this little nugget of beer-swigging brilliance? Are, say, Yankees fanatics automatically anti-Fever Pitch? Must Packers die-hards loathe the great Brian’s Song? I hope not. Hell, I’m a Michigan Wolverines man, my blood is actually colored maize and blue, and I still dig Rudy and Notre Dame/Ohio State rooter Vince Vaughn. So where, friends, does the devotion end and the fun begin? What piece of entertainment do you admit to liking against every fiber of your sports-fan being?

I am actually a student of Michigan State University (can I ask you Joshua if you actually went to Michigan?) and I bleed green, so I guess the piece of entertainment that I can admit liking against every fiber of my sports-fan and student self is this post on my beloved popwatch written by “a Michigan Wolverines man”.
“Good job. Very entertaining. But it was not without a serious message – on Thanksgivng, gentlemen, it’s important to remember that there are places, other places, in this world that do not have the things that we have and take for granted. For example – Indianapolis. The Colts. They’re terrible!”-Bob Swerski 11/23/91 SNL. How true, how true.
I happen to be a Chicago native living in Indianapolis, and fear not Joshua there are some Colts fans who respect da bears. I have witnessed it among a few people in this city. Me myself? I’m still a Bears fan. GO BEARS! But if the Colts win, I won’t cry TOO hard.
I am from Indy but living in Florida now and I do not hate the Bears. Of course I want the Colts to win but it wouldn’t be a travesty if the Bears won. I just didn’t want to see the Patriots in it again and hear about their “4th Superbowl win in 6 years”. I guess I am anti-New England. :0)
Praying for a Colt’s win…but I still love SNL’s DA BEARS. This is the superbowl I was waiting for…INDY VS CHICAGO. During the NFC game, I repeated “da bears” throughout the game. BUT MY HEART BELONGS TO INDY….GO COLTS!
Yes, real Yankees fans are automatically against the American Fever Pitch…The British version was cute but I can’t watch that movie, I do continue to like Jimmy Fallon and Drew Barrymore though.
I used to love how much these guys adored Mike Ditka. In the ep with Michael Jordan, the guys say “I bet you could go to the finals and win by yourself, if you were coached by Ditka”.
Ditka’s restaurant was a place my dad never took me to, so every time we passed by I’d look at the facade with longing.
That said, it always bugged me that Chris Farley (who’s from Madison, Wisconsin aka Packer Country) would do a pro Bears skit…
Forgot to say. You all know that even Ditka is a Packer Backer…
Yeah my friend is allowed to wear a fake mustache and aviators tomorrow for work. DA BEARS! Thanks to the Bears, I get to wear jeans to work. It fills my heart with joy! Oh and love this sketch.
I’m a born and raised Chicagoan and die hard Bears fan, but I gotta say Brett Favre is pretty funny in his cameo in There’s Something About Mary. Only for the sake of comedy and entertainment would I ever admit that.
GO BEARS!!!!
As an alumnus of U of M and unofficial representative, we kindly ask you remove your allegiance to our University if you’re going to admit to liking Rudy. You may admit to liking both ‘Point Break’ and ‘The Replacements’ because Keanu Reeves plays an OSU QB in both and that seems appropriate to you, if you’d like to get back in our good graces.
Whoa, whoa, whoa. Vince Vaughan roots for OSU AND Notre Dame? You can’t do that.
TRAITOR!!! Rudy is awful.
Okay okay. Even as a Green Bay fan, I am hoping the Bears will win. I like the thought of the NFC North taking the title, even if is our cross border rivals. After all, it’ll inspire some decent competition in the division next year, which is all this GB fan has now that Farve’s no longer legen(wait for it, and I hope you’re not lactose intolerant)dairy.
I’m a Pats fan and I hate the Colts and Manning’s twee little face with the fiery passion of a thousand burning suns, so I’ll be rooting for da Bears. That was one of my favorite sketches back in the good old days of SNL. Go Bears!
Why are people so against da bears?!! This is going to be a great superbowl! There are a decent amount of colts fans in chicago because of how close it is to IN so the bars are going to be mighty interesting!!! But yeah GOOOOOOOOOO BEARS!! screw that 7 point spread for the colts!!
As a Chicagoan, I am praying, PRAYING dat SNL does a Superfans skit on Saturday. It needs to be done. Bring in Wendt, bring in Mike Myers, bring in Joe Mantegna…bring them all back (RIP Farley). I am demanding this as a loyal viewer. Well, that and 1) a date with Kristin Wiig, and 2) a Bears title! DA BEARS!
You can totally be a Peyton Maniac and still love “Da Bears.” As I’ve been telling everyone this week, my love for Peyton goes back to his days at UT. But, as a Tennessean, I have no team but the Titans. Unless they are not in contention- which is often- when I then revert to Peyton-Love. How to resolve the two? Like “Da Bears” when Ditka moved to Nawlins… I’ve set up camp at the exact spot between Indianapolis and Nashville. My love for Peyton and love for Tennessee conflicting, but resolved. Without that classic dilemna “Da Bears” faced, I’d have no point of reference for my own conflicting emotions.
I’m just hoping that SNL does a Superfans skit this weekend!
I hated Rudy up until about, oh, september 16th last year. now I can’t get enough of it. did I mention I’m currently a michigan wolverine?
bears…
bears…
bears…
As a die-hard Yankee fan, I can say with no remorse that I didn’t pay to see Fever Pitch. I finally saw it, and I can honestly say that I would have enjoyed it alot more if it kept the original ending (the part they added on was PAINFUL).
Red Sox fans are also anti-Fever Pitch. That garbage movie was a mockery of every Red Sox fan, and a crappy film to boot. We like to pretend it never happened.
Rich – must be tough being a scUM fan if you like Basketball!
I think it’s perfectly acceptable to like pop culture stuff about a team/athlete/etc. that you despise. For instance, I was raised understanding that you root for anyone playing Notre Dame (my dad loves Purdue), and I really love “Rudy” (it’s sort of embarassing, actually, I cry at the end every time). That being said…DA BEARS!
Paul’s right. Anyone with eyes, Red Sox fan or not, should forget Fever Pitch ever happened.
