Pierce Brosnan tells us he's ready to loot more museums

Pierceb_lForget about James Bond, people — it’s been almost eight long years since Pierce Brosnan was last shoehorned into the tailored suit of that other dapper gent: Thomas Crown. And while there’s been chatter for ages and ages about a sequel to that 1999 remake, nothing’s emerged.

So I was glad when the 53-year-old star told me that The Thomas Crown Affair 2 (sometimes referred to as The Topkapi Affair) is still moving forward and getting closer to reality. We met last week in L.A., where he was doing press for his latest movie, the Western Seraphim Falls. (A full Q&A with Brosnan, in which he discusses this film and, of course, life after 007, will run on EW.com tomorrow.) Here’s what he told me about TTCA2, which he’s producing and which, apparently, will not reunite him with costar Rene Russo: "Thomas Crown 2, for all intents and purposes, will happen. The script came in two days ago and it’s good. We’ve announced it, we’ve said to the world that we’re going to do it — come hell or high water, we’re going to do it. The bar is high on this one, the expectation is high on it."

He has reason to be cautious, since in the two-plus years following the revocation of his 007 license to kill, Brosnan has starred in a number of relatively inexpensive indies like The Matador and the upcoming thriller Butterfly on a Wheel. But TTCA2, he notes, is "jumping back into the big budget world." What’s more, the actor seems to have an extra-personal stake in the matter, since he recently asserted that The Thomas Crown Affair is his favorite of his own movies. Yep, even more than the Bonds. I can’t really disagree with that — anybody else?

I love this guy but I don’t love how he doesn’t appreciate how the Bond films made him most famous (and probably the most money).
TTCA was a good movie but I wasn’t dying for a sequel.

No Rene Russo? Count me out. She was the best thing about the first one.

Throw in some more good jazz music (Nina Simone, anyone), and I’m all about this movie….

TTCA was my favorite Pierce Brosnan movie too, but I don’t know about not having Rene Russo in it. She was the heart and soul of that movie.

Actually considering he produced Thomas Crown he probably made more money from that than any Bond film, especially considering the costs to profit ratio.
He’s also said ad nauseum how he loved his time as Bond, loved the character, and how it gave him the opportunity to have his own production company and make films like Crown and Matador. That doesn’t mean he’s never allowed to like anything more than Bond or make other films.
Anyhow — Thomas Crown is much cooler than James Bond (and better dressed) and I look forward to the sequel.

After seeing Rene Russon in Two For The Money, I think it’s a good idea to leave her out of TCA 2.

Wasn’t Thomas Crown Affair the movie with the hella gratuitous sex scene that takes up like half the movie? or is it the really bad dancing scene where the salsa music’s in the background and it’s made clear that Pearce can’t dance…oh wait, the movie had BOTH. Now that we see what a good Bond is all about, I’m not really missing Mr. Remington Steele. Sorry.

Aw, no Rene Russo? How disappointing. Hopefully he finds someone else to spar with who makes the sparks fly.

I love “Thomas Crown Affair”, thought it was much better than the original, but do we need (or want) a sequel? And how can they do it without Rene Russo? I’m concerned, but I’ll see it anyway.

I love the Thomas Crown Affair – it is the coolest movie. It is so funny this article was posted today – I just heard Barack Hussein Obama (our next president!) saying this was one of his favorite movies! LOL!

Too bad there’s no Renee…even though she DID look busted in “Two for the Money” her chemistry with Brosnan in “Crown” was off the charts!

Newsflash Brosnan: The reason “The Thomas Crown Affair” is one of your favorite movies is because of Rene Russo’s performance.
Without her, I have no desire to see it.

    What studio is releasing TTCA2?

The question is: How can the sequel be faithful to continuity as well as to the characters and to what they’ve been through in the first movie? And how can anyone imagine to keep this without the on-going relationship between Catherine and Thomas? They love each other, they are together now against all odds, escaped together in an airplane, probably to Europe, the police knows about Thomas being an art thief. Here you have the perfect start for “Topkapi”. Thomas Crown becomes Harper and Catherine Banning becomes Elizabeth Lipp. Okay, maybe variations of it. I really can’t understand why Brosnan, St.Clair and Irish Dreamtime don’t take this route. Why do they need a different affair for Crown? I guess it needs a really good twist to get rid of Catherine’s character or you take the arrogant way and simply ignore the fact that she was the perfect match for Crown. I still hope there is a faithful way to go on, but I’m a bit sad about it.

Who doesn’t appreciate who? I’ve heard nothing but positive comments from Pierce about how great a gig Bond was, including the paychecks that have allowed a great lifestyle for him and his family, but its over and time to move on. And afterall, they’re the ones who dropped him, not vice versa.
