'Saturday Night Live': Thinking outside the 'Box'

I’m excited for the return of SNL this weekend, and not just because THE SHINS are playing — I think the show was picking up some serious creative momentum before the holidays, and I want to see if they can keep it up.

Of course, the standout moment for SNL in 2006 was "D–k in a Box," or, as it is more commonly known in my household, "Thank God, now we can stop talking about ‘Lazy Sunday.’"  So, as a bit of a mental and emotional warm-up for this weekend’s 2007 premiere, I trotted over to YouTube and rounded up some of the "D–k in a Box" knock-offs. I encourage you to watch them, sit for a moment in quiet contemplation, and once again appreciate that while SNL sometimes sucks, at least it doesn’t suck this badly.

Wait. It suddenly occurs to me that this might all be NSFW. Beware the Net nanny!

I’m excited for SNL this weekend too because of Jake Gyllenhaal hosting! He’s delicious!

What a difference a couple of years made. When Lazy Sunday hit, NBC yanked all the copies off of Youtube.
Two years later, almost all of episodes of all their shows can be seen online and SNL has hundreds of videos on its website. Welcome to the 00s, folks.
Two weeks of SNL this season has actually had multiple good sketch comedy. Here’s hoping Saturday is number three.

I think there have been several above-average shows this season, including Hugh Laurie, Alec Baldwin, and Justin Timberlake. I think a lot of it has to do with the host, although writing is important too.

While d*** in a box was funny, I can’t help but laugh at the Alec Baldwin’s Schweaty Balls everytime!!

The reason the show rules now is almost entirely due to Kristin Wiig. She could read the phone book and I’d be A) turned on and B) laughing hysterically.

The last appearance of Baldwin on the show was high-frickin’ larious. With that Valtrex ad where the couple wonders how a married monagamous couple could suddenly end up with herpes was classic! In an ideal world, they’d bring back the “cowbell” and “failed star wars screen tests” featuring Kevin Spacey as Christopher Walken.

I saw the D..k in a box sketch on Leno and I never laughed so hard. I was especially laughing at how Andy Sandberg managed to buy those threads at MC Hammers garage sale. lol! Now all we need is a sequel with Baldwin, D..k in a box with big Schwety balls.

If only SNL could spell this week’s host’s name correctly (Gyllenhaal) on their website. I guess The Shins was easy enough for them to spell.

D*ck In a Box was hilarious (my uncle mimicked the song and dance at Christmas dinner in a priceless family moment) and SNL has been pretty good so far, so I hope they can keep up the good work.

Wow, Pop Watch you powers astound me, I put up the misspelling an hour ago, and NBC already fixed it. Gawker shame on you got sent that message two days ago.
Thank you Pop Watch Power. All hail the Pop Watch

I watched D**k in a Box last night for shiggles. STILL cracks me up! You are all forgetting about the Schwetty Weiners. Rachel Dratch took a bite and started choking — one of the BEST improv moments I’ve seen on that show.

    to Stephanie Travitsky:
i am pretty sure Samberg bought those clothes at a Color Me Badd yard sale :)

  • Stephanie Travitsky

Kelli, you are right. Plus Samberg looked very much like the lead singer. At first I thought that they were making a retro joke about NKOTB or something. It is clearly one of the best sketches of the season.

I got to see Box in a Box (by someone named Bunny) on Countdown with Keith Olbermann the other night and I was dying. They also showed the bleeped version of D*** in a Box. Olbermann and Joe Scarborough were trying sooo hard to keep straight faces.
Gee, why can’t SNL be this funny more often?

  • EP Sato

I miss making fun of Color Me Badd. Beavis and Butthead once referred to them as “a super suck group”, which made me laugh to my heart’s content.
