The DGA Nominees: Guild by association

Categories: Oscars 2007

Ms_lBig surprise, there were no surprises today when the Directors Guild of America announced its list of nominees for its top prize, Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Feature Film for 2006. (Or, as Oscar prognosticators call it, pretty close to a sure thing; the DGA winner has taken home the Best Director Oscar 51 out of 57 times.) Bill Condon (Dreamgirls), Jonathan Dayton & Valerie Faris (Little Miss Sunshine), Stephen Frears (The Queen), and Alejandro González Iñárritu (Babel) all got their first DGA feature nods. Cited for The Departed, perennial bridesmaid Martin Scorsese (pictured) was nominated for a seventh time, though he did win the DGA’s coveted Consolation Pr– sorry, Lifetime Achievement Award in 2003. You’ll notice that this list is identical to that for the Producers Guild’s top honor, and if you replace The Queen with Bobby, you get the roster of the Screen Actors Guild’s big contenders. (Hmm, you may call it chance, I call it a harbinger.) Anyway, the point is: still no awards-season love for Lady in the Water’s M. Night Shyamalan.

What, “no surprises”??? What about the exclusion of Clint Eastwood and Paul Greengrass?

  • Rahul

Yeah, I’m surprised that Eastwood didn’t make the cut, and of course my boy Greengrass. Leaving him out is making me really frakkin’ worried come 1/23.

  • Rahul

Another explanation: this is most wide-open field in years. Makes things more exciting and it’s nice to see the wealth spread, but I really wanted Greengrass to at least be acknowledged by the DGA.

  • Lucas Jensen

Um, Alfonso Cuaron? Did anybody see Children of Men? If that isn’t the best -directed movie of the year then I don’t know what is.

  • Babaloo

I have to agree Alfonso Cuaron adaptation and direction of Children of Men is the best of the year. I really hope that they dont forget that film when Oscar noms roll around…

It feels like Marty’s year. It’s a wide open year and Marty is beyond due.

Believe it or not, my favorite scorcese films are GOODFELLAS and THE AGE OF INNOCENCE, for which I thought he was going to get every award on the planet. I LOVED — The Departed, he is back to form with that film, which is my favorite of 2006. I hope, I hope he gets the oscar this time. He’s deserved it so many times before.

No surprises? I’d say the inclusion of the Sunshine duo is a big surprise.

    UHM…PEDRO ALMODOVAR?!
“Volver” is his best film EVER. I also agree with the notion that Alfonso Cuaron should be recognized for “Children of Men” which is a fantastic film!

I am delighted that Clint Eastwood is nowhere to be found on the list. I loved Dreamgirls, Little Miss Sunshine and The Departed. I hope the award goes FINALLY to Scorsese.

  • Dave

It’s definitely Marty’s year, as he SHOULD (and hopefully will) win the DGA, Golden Globe, and, finally, Oscar for Best Director. Also, with the Golden Globe, DGA, and Producer’s Guild nominations out, it looks like The Departed, Dreamgirls, The Queen, Babel, and either Letters from Iwo Jima and Little Miss Sunshine are locks for Best Picture Oscar noms.

Sorry, the comment form is closed at this time.
