Stephen Colbert's shred-tastic 2006 finale

Last night, EW No. 9 Entertainer of the Year Stephen Colbert aired his final Colbert Report of the year, and what a doozy it was. Seriously, where else are you going to see Morley Safer of 60 Minutes, New York governor-elect Eliot Spitzer, Rick Nielsen of Cheap Trick, and Peter Frampton on the same program? Not to mention Henry Kissinger — a guy who’s won a Nobel Prize and is surely the most gravely serious man ever to serve as Secretary of State — declaring it was "time to rock." (IFilm has highlights of the show here and here.)

I’m not goint to rehash the contretemps that led to the guitar solo challenge between Colbert and the Decemberists (represented by, naturally, band guitarist Chris Funk), but I do want to declare the set-up genius. From the inanity of Spitzer serving as a contest judge (I guess his investigation of music industry payola gave him quasi-music-realted cred) to Frampton and his voicebox arriving just in time to relieve a "bloodied" Colbert, the "Countdown to Guitarmaggedon" was a excellent close to an excellent year for the fake newscaster, whose own cred is clearly beyond reproach among politicians, musicians, and college kids. Can the man do no wrong?

For performances like last night, as well as the Emmys and the White House Correspondents dinner, Stephen Colbert should’ve been the Entertainer of the Year…and yes, I STILL haven’t gotten over “Grey’s Anatomy” taking the title.

Colbert gets better and better. Someone said it before, but he works harder than anyone else for 30 full minutes. At first, I didn’t think it could be better than The Daily Show, but it is and it’s all because of Stephen.
Last night’s show was hilarious! I loved Rock and Awe, Countdown to Guitarmaggeden!

I am begining to thing Colbert is seriously the funniest person on tv or anywhere right now. He should have been #1 entertainer of the year. Last nights show was histerical

Selecting Grey’s Anatomy over Stephen Colbert as Entertainer of the Year was Mcsilly.

I am still miffed that Monk Tony Shaloub won over Colbert at the Emmys. That is so wrong. I still prefer Jon Stewart over Stephen Colbert, and I don’t watch the Colbert Report more than once a week because it’s not as funny as the Daily Show. Interviews just seem so fake and too scripted.

Correction. It wasn’t the Monk guy that beat Colbert at the Emmys. It was Mr. Copacabana himself….Barry Manilow!

Sorry Trisha, I love the Daily Show too, but Colbert’s interviews are anything but scripted. Uncomfortable and hilarious maybe, but not scripted. As opposed to the typical talk show mainstay of host-setting-up-guest for a predetermined anecdote, Colbert goes out of his way to challenge each and every guest with ridiculous statements and leading questions – even if he cracks himself up doing it. Cheers to the best show on television.

    WIlliam
He was actually nominated in TWO Categories this year.
In one category he lost to Tony Schalub (MONK)
In the other, he lost to Barry Manillow.
Lets not call people out without knowing the facts…although I appreciate your willingness to speak from the gut!!!!

Colbert demonstated something else last night–his power!! He can get anyone pretty much to do anything: Spitzer, Kissinger, Frampton, his viewers, etc.

  • Edward

Morley Safer, Cheap Trick, Peter Frampton? Colbert wussed out with the “bleeding finger”. Snore……

  • mikey

Did you notice how he achieved victory? Stephen was cut, but he did not run. That’s because he’s not part of the cut-and-run crowd. Those guys are losers.
One thing might have it better. Had Carlos Santana played, the show could really have been labelled “Superstantial.”
