The top celebrity viral videos of 2006

1069__brit_l_1If one can judge a society by the viral videos it watches, I hereby declare American society as dead as Aramaic. We apparently are obsessed with the following celebrities: Britney Spears, Kevin Federline, Lindsay Lohan, Paris Hilton, Paris Hilton, and Paris Hilton.

Of course, none of this is a great revelation. You could have gathered that on your own. Luckily, however, you can now cite "statistics" when decrying the self-immolation of our culture. Shoot over to Viral Video Chart‘s celebrity page to view the top ten famous people viral videos of 2006. There’s Britney burping (pictured), K-Fed getting divorced by text message, and other ’06 classics. Thankfully, the site’s main 2006 list shows that your fellow country-men and women still care about the important things: bumbling politicians and their lovable gaffes. I mean, is it still not obvious why Kerry lost?

what do you expect when having the right publisist is more important then having anything resembeling talent?

  • Sally

I promise you, the minute the media and bloggers stop writing about these people, the American public will move on.

  • Josh

But why are they the most-viewed? Is it people actually searching for them? Or is it because a magazine site like popwatch has a site to them? Maybe Jay Leno does a joke about FedEx being dumped, and people are like, “Wow, they got that on video?” You all are contributors! Sure some of us enjoy seeing these, and even more of us enjoy mocking them (personally, I fall into neither camp). But I hope popwatch and its iln are fully ready to take the blame for this apocolypse!
(okay, sort of kidding, but I have a point. there’s tons of videos / sites I wouldn’t be aware of if not for popwatch).

Celebrities are one thing, but why are Americans hooked on these pseudo-celebrities like Kevin Federline and Nicole Richie, just to name two?

  • Cliff

Does anyone really believe that these “celebrities” aren’t distributing the videos themselves? We’re not exactly talking a noticeable level of class with anyone listed. It’s not like there’s a Cate Blanchett porn floating around, or an Edward Norton bar fight, or a Kate Winslet up-the-dress shot. They’re talented and don’t have to pander for fame. Paris, Lyndsay, K-Fed…it’s a different story. You wanna keep fame, you gotta get your hands dirty.

Cliff– that’s an excellent point. Celebrities create controversy to ensure interest; true performers rely on their great talent to get by.

Regarding Cliff’s comment, I think Meryl Streep said something to this effect. I’m paraphrasing here: She was working with Lindsey Lohan on Prairie Home Companion and Lindsey asked Meryl how she stayed out of the paper, tabloids, etc. Meryl Streep sorta rolled her eyes in the interview and said that if you REALLY wanted to stay out of the tabloids, it was easy….move away from Hollywood, go home at night, show up for work. This was the gist of the interview. And…well….she’s right!
I think these videos and other tabloid trappings are the equivilent of rubbernecking at a traffic accident. You drive by and thank your lucky stars you’re not them.

Britney isnt embarassed by her goofyness(stoned)…that clip is an outtake from her show Chaotic and can be seen on the series DVD…no big secret how it leaked.

  • JenJen

Cliff and Julie – I totally agree with both of you. I couldn’t have said it better myself!

It is a consistant fad with publicists to make their clients a lot more clownish and idiotic than they have been in the past. They have always stood by their claim that even bad publicity is better than no publicity.

  • Jakeem

Gee, I always thought Kerry lost because of voting irregularities in Ohio.
