The Roots need your moral support

10194__game_lThis video diary makes me very, very sad. In it, the Roots’ drummer/spokesperson and one of the best time-keepers of our era, Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson, pours his heart out to the webcam. "Today is not a good day," he begins, before complaining that the Roots’ latest album, Game Theory, didn’t make Mojo Magazine’s 50 best albums of 2006 list. Seems like a small slight, but check it out, this dude is seriously glum: "To not make the Top 50 of one of my all-time favorite music publications… it’s bumming the s— out of me," he moans. By the end of the clip, Questlove looks like he’s one step from pulling out a hanky.

So Questlove, we just have one important message for you: Cheer up, man! We like Mojo‘s 7,000-word profiles of Nick Drake as much as the next music geek, but they’re not the only magazine out there. After all, one extremely wise EW writer gave Game Theory an A-. Does that cheer you up a bit? (Or does it make it worse? Maybe you hate EW…) So, if there are Roots fans in Manchester or Birmingham, England, where the Roots are playing this weekend, please give Questlove a hug for us. Anyone else, just go buy their latest disc; Questlove’s mental and emotional health is in your hands!

I loved me some Roots since “Do you want More???!!!???” came out in what, 1993 ?!? Out of all the great hip hop acts to come out of Philly (Digable Planets, the Goats), they’ve shown the most staying power and talent (Fresh Prince is an actor now, so he doesn’t count).
B side is that I’ve always felt Blackthought gets too prominent of a role in a band that’s more about the music than the rhymes. Check out “the Seed 2.0″. For part of the song, Coby Chestnut sings some really soulful neo soul that’s broken up by Blackthought’s totally unnessery rhymes. IMHO, The Roots should get some hella soulful singer (like Coby Chestnut) to split time with Blackthought and the product would be a little more jazzy and soulful. But as they say, everyone’s a critic.
Oh, for those in Birgmingham and Manchester, go see the Roots live. They put on a fantastic set!

Yeah, I’m sure one of hip-hop’s most talented artists can take solace in the fact that a magazine that spends most of its time talking about America’s Top Model and Grey’s Anatomy gave his album an A-, while his favorite music mag didn’t give him props.

Who cares what some magazine said? You’re popular and successful and have a great life, so quit moping around! I agree with Ep that all those in Birmingham and Manchester should see them. They put on a fantastic concert my sophmore year at Georgetown, and my friends and I still talk about how great that show was!

I gotta agree about Black Thought. He’s not one of my favorite rappers, but I LOVE the band.
and Tyler D.- Please, its an all around entertainment magazine. if you don’t value it, why do you read it?

  • Tyler D

I value some of the magazine’s contributors, not all of them.

hey ep sato, digable planets formed in new york city. only doodlebug is from philadelphia.

  • Ep Sato

Digable’s dj was also a philly guy. From my understanding, King Britt (aka Scuba) still lives and still spins in Philadelphia. Even with two Philly bred members, it would certainly make sense for the band to be based out of NYC. Wherever they were from, they were slick like that and hit like that, but after poor album sales of record 2 they quit like that.

Aw, poor Questlove. I mean, he is rich and all that, but Game Theory is a damn good album, definitely in my top 10 for the year.

  • Charlie

I saw the Roots this summer at Radio City Music Hall and was blown away! I’m a big fan, and Game Theory is solid. We love it, ?uest!
