It’s Typecasting Week here in TV, as networks announce three new pilots that will in no way challenge their lead actors!
First, Amy "RICK RICK RICK RICK" Poehler will star as a bratty kid in Nickelodeon’s new animated series, Mighty B. Poehler describes her character, Bessie, as "an optimistic child ‘who believes she can grow up to be a rock star, actress, politician and brain surgeon all at the same.’" I say once more: RICK RICK RICK RICK!
Next up, TNT has announced that it’s in negotiations for two shows: Heartland, in which everyone’s favorite Everwood doc, Treat Williams, will play… a surgeon, and Grace in which Holly Hunter — a tough Southerner who once played a cop (pictured) in that one movie where Sigourney Weaver was being stalked by Harry Connick Jr. — will star as a tough Southern cop. For the record, TNT is also swearing this show is nothing like The Closer, which stars Kyra Sedgwick as a tough Southern cop. OK, then!
One final un-casting note: TNT has also cancelled Saved, TomEverett Scott’s strangely-entrancing-because-it’s-so-all-over-the-placeEMT series. Poor Tom Everett Scott. I like him. Will someone pleasefind something worthwhile for that boy to do? Perhaps, I dunno… hecould play, like, a drummer! In, like, a young rock band that’s juststarting to make it big! Or a werewolf! Yeah!

I love werewolf Tom Everett Scott
[even if the film was a big step down from its predecessor]
Of course, Holly Hunter also played a cop in Raising Arizona. I’m guessing Grace will be somewhat different in tone.
There’s at least one difference between Grace and Closer: I’m gonna watch Grace.
I hope Mighty B is Amy’s Kaitlan character. Why hasn’t Tom Everett Scott made it big. I have seen That Thing You Do a couple of hundred times.
Treat Williams is a surgeon in the Heartland. Colorado is in the Heartland. Round up the rest of the Everwood cast.
I’d watch Holly Hunter do anything. There’s nobody like her. I have no worries of typecasting…or copycatting (is that a word?).
They cancelled Saved?! Why? It was a really good show with a really great cast. Tom Everett Scott was so funny and so heart-warming as Wyatt the slacker paramedic. Now, I will never know if they killed Sack or not which was a big cliffhanger during the season finale. Damn it, TNT!
I have to chime in with some love for Holly Hunter. She never fails to amaze me, and more so when she can use her distinctive Georgia accent.
Note to Holly: Any chance we’ll ever see a sequal to Broadcast News? You guys left me wanting more.
I think they should do a spin-off show based on the Kaitlin character from SNL – “TAKE ME TO TACO BELL RICK!!!!”
WEll, at least I won’t have to see that fish-faced Alice from Saved anymore.
Too bad, I really liked that show.
Speaking of awesome shows… does anyone know if and when Psych is coming back?
Holly Hunter AND Treat Williams in series!? It MUST be Christmas! Still miss Everwood….
Awww… I really liked Saved. Let’s get a 2 hr tv movie to tie up the dangling storylines.
Ditto on finding my Tommy another show. He’s much too good to not be on something we all can see.
Holly Hunter’s best gig as a cop was “Raising Arizona”. To this day, my momma still says (in southern twang) “Get away from him you warthog from hell!”
And TBS’s series “My Boys” is totally rockin’! Anyone else having fun with the Chi-town based romp?
I like Amy Poehler, Holly Hunter, and Treat Williams, so I hope their new series do well. I agree that Holly Hunter and Treat Williams’ series do seem like typecasting, but if the shows are good, then it doesn’t bother me. And aren’t most actors “typecast” when they’re cast in animated shows or movies? Tom Hanks as an insecure but lovable leading man in Toy Story; Robin Williams as a manic, hilarious fill-in-the-blank in fill-in-the-blank; pretty much anyone who has guest-starred on The Simpsons. I could go on, but you get the idea.
So wait. Is Heartland going to take place in the South? Because if you remove the surgeon and replace it with a plastic surgeon you have “Doc Hollywood” which was rewritten as “Cars”.
I have to chime in with some love for Holly Hunter.
