Which song deserves an Oscar?

The Hollywood Reporter helpfully offers this list of songs eligible this year for the Best Original Song Oscar — I say "helpfully" because otherwise I’d have hardly been able to recall a single tune from this largely unmemorable set of tunes. (Well, OK, "In Rosa Vernat Lilium" from The Nativity Story was kind of a toe-tapper.) Not that you need to have actually heard the songs in order to lay odds on the nominees in this category. Popular animated movies and lavish musicals always get a spot, so save room for the tunes from Cars and Happy Feet and the big new ballad from Dreamgirls. Also look for one actually funny song (the "Blame Canada"/Mighty Wind slot), so that’ll be Borat‘s "O Kazakhstan." Finally, given that hip-hop songs have finally started to win Oscars ("Lose Yourself," "It’s Hard Out Here for a Pimp"), look for the last slot to go to "PJ & Rooster" from Idlewild. Or am I being too cynical? Your prognostications, please.

Gary, come on. ;) ‘Idlewild’ tanked. ‘Borat’ doesn’t really seem to be remembered for that song in particular. Smart money (at least on my behalf) says that the winner is going to be Melissa Etheridge’s “I Need To Wake Up”. ‘An Inconvenient Truth’ was a huge surprise hit and the song was the backbone of a movie that definitely appeals to the liberal side of Hollywood. Give Etheridge the Oscar already. ;)

Please do not overlook Avril Lavigne’s simple yet memorable song from Eragon. Keep holding on is among her greatest tunes from a already full catalogue at such a young age. Add an Oscar to her mantle

I think that “I Need to Wake Up” by Melissa Etheridge will definitely be nominated. I also think that Dreamgirls and Avril Lavigne for Eragon will be nominated. Based on the buzz that Dreamgirls is getting, I am biased to think that song of the year will go to that show.

The Kahzaki National Anthem (to tune of The American National Anthem)-Borat
Brittney Murphy’s version of Boogie Wonderland-Happy Feet
Shipping out to Boston- Dropkick Murphys- The Departed

Avril Lavigne’s song from Eragon the kind of bland, insipid, supposedly inspirational song that tends to garner a nom. Since she’s so “punk”, she could appeal to the Academy’s desire to be hip.

“I think that “I Need to Wake Up” by Melissa Etheridge will definitely be nominated”
Yeah… what a great song to cap off a boring lecture from Al Gore. ;)

    Inconvienent Truth song
    Casino Royale song
    Happy Feet song
    Cars song
    Dreamgirls song
Possibly the Curious George song if any of the above fails. They are not the best songs but the most obvious ones given past trends and that it continues to be a stale year. A real suprise would be the Devotchka song from Little Miss Sunshine.

Cars, Happy Feet, An Inconvenient Truth, Eradon, and, of course, Dreamgirls are probably good bets to be the five Best Song nominees.

    An Inconvienat Truth Song
    Dreamgirls Song
    Dreamgirls Song
    Dreamgirls Song
    Happy Feet Song
Listen from Dreamgirls will end up winning.
Also Stephanie- Britney Murphy’s song can’t be nominated because its not original.

    Opps, I meant Eragon.

  • Fatima

    *Inconvenient*
I don’t know what happened there.

  • Paul U.

YES!!! Melissa Etheridge, Oscar winner…can’t wait. That’s my girl!

I hope Dreamgirls doesn’t win, but it probably will. I mean how much more intolerable and stuck up will Beyonce become if she wins?? Don’t let it happen academy!!!! Having her perform will be bad enough!

  • Lora

Any of the three from Over the Hedge. To see Ben Folds win an Oscar would be phenominal!

  • Stacey

And why is Cobra Starship not on the list? That’s not just left over SoaP hype – I really love that song. Very catchy and I can totally envision the performance on the Oscar telecast…
