Not sure if it was intentional or just coincidence, but I was psyched to see Ugly Betty work a condom reference into last night’s episode, which aired on World AIDS Day eve. Sure, it started out as little more than an awkwardly funny sight gag when Henry From Accounting (sexy geek Christopher Gorham) caught Betty (the radiant America Ferrera, pictured) clutching a handful of prophylactics after she’d been pretending to look for something in someone else’s purse. But her explanation — "I was just making sure that everyone was being safe… you know, office party hookups?" — was, in the words of her new office crush, "very responsible." Nicely played, Team Betty!

Given how much the show seems to justify the ole’ sins of the flesh (examples: Betty’s man-slut of a boss and his cheating dad, Selma Hayek’s two boyfriends’ salsa dancing competition, Betty’s cheating ex-boyfriend, the entire cast of the telenovela betty’s dad watches [he killed his ex-boss and stole the dude's woman], Betty’s psuedo brother-in-law living in sin with Betty’s sister for a few eps and the precocious kid they had out of wedlock together), it’s good that they are telling folks to at least be responsible about their actions when they act irresponsibly.
Ironically, it seems like the show’s gay characters and Betty are the only ones who AREN’T sleeping around. that said, everyone gets some in any good telenovela…
Wow, Ep, what a way to twist the subject into something it isn’t- I don’t think the show glorifies all the sins of the flesh (like Daniel learning that having a family can be more important that bedding his way through Manhattan) and Hilda’s ex didn’t live with them- he just spent the night and it wasn’t even implied that they had sex. I mean, if running around like Papa Meade has been (like a crazy person) is justifying his having a mistress and a wife, then I would hate to see what exactly you consider moral justifications. And the two gay characters that we know- well one is teenage boy so I don’t think a gay/straight distinction needs to be made there. Now, with THAT SAID, while I think it might have been a cute coincidence that Betty found the condoms on the eve of World AIDS Day, I think it was probably nothing more than a clever way to increase the sexual tension between Betty and Henry.
Slezak are you thinking of Mojitos? I’m thinking of a cosmo!
Come now, Daniel learns his lesson after sleeping with half of his staff, Hilda’s ex walked around in her robe the next morning (added to her dad’s reaction would imply they did sleep together) and Papa Meade went on for years with a wife and mistress.
And while she’s got a cool new love interest, for a while Betty DID take back a cheating loser of an ex boyfriend. There may not be a flat out justification of cheating on the show, but it doesn’t seem to exactly celebrate monagamy, either. Even Daniel’s lesson came at the price of almost losing out to the “other” guy Selma’s character was involved with.
On the Wold AIDS day tip, the best way to avoid any and all STDs is to be 1) celibate (BORING!) or monagamous. An episode dedicated to monagamy would be cool, but wouldn’t be fun to watch. So in that case, advocating for safe sex is also a good idea so agreed that it’s cool Betty put in a plug for using condoms.
And hey, I ain’t hatin’. As stated before, any good telenovela has lots of cheatin’ and sleeping around. That’s what makes them so fun to watch.
Come on, Ep. Don’t try to decode the episode. Just sit back, relax, and enjoy the show.
this show deserves the emmy for best comedy..and america for lead female
