One of the Best and Worst Things Ever, Vol. 1

15282__alanis_lThe Robin Sparkles video on last week’s How I Met Your Mother got us thinking… what if another Canadian teen pop star, Alanis Morissette, was just a one-hit wonder whose best-ever video was 1991’s rarely seen "Walk Away"? Infested with copious amounts of velvet spandex and pre-Friends Matt LeBlanc, the video’s sometimes difficult to watch, especially when the young "lovers" decide to converse. I was getting a faint Britney Spears "But I thought the old lady dropped it into the ocean!" vibe from the convo Alanis and Matt had in the "downtown cafe" about his broken car. "Get it fixed." Duh, Matt. It’s so easy.

Like many early-career videos, this one’s flaws are so awful they end up being pluses. The video exists, for one. That’s a perk. Alanis is totally believable as a hyper-produced sellout. Also funny. ’80s hair, sports bra, abs: Check! But my favorite so-bad-they’re-good elements might be LeBlanc’s horrible, horrible delivery on his billiards strategy and dumbfounded "What?" look when he realizes the time. Dude, it’s 10:30! Time to go meet a 17-year-old who’s going to sit in a cab and make annoying faces until she finally lets you in!

Wait, I lied. The best parts are the random cuts to Alanis dancing. Where is she going? She looks like she’s on a mission somewhere (off-camera, perhaps?), but she never actually walks away! DO IT! Say goodbye! Quick, become angsty and jaded, otherwise we won’t want you anymore!

    o dear…
what a trip to scurryland was that? I thought that place was closed for the season.
Dance pop, big hair, bad acting… must be a late 80s early 90s video.
Anyone remember when mariah carey tried to dance in the school in her “someday” video?

omg, i just watched it again…cause I can be masochistic like that sometimes…
Is that DEMI MOORE making a cameo as well?

  • Chuck_A

Goodness, I’ll bet that Ed McMahon cringed when he saw what he’d helped create (at least he can rest easily now).

If Alannis achieved pop stardom in 1991, maybe she never meets “Mr. Duplicity”. We’d never get to hear angry Alannis.

yes, crappily produced videos from unknown talents are the best! i mean worst. i mean, alanis morisette, who is him?

“Walk Away” is high quality Canadian pop when compared to other pop music from the 90s in Canada….trust me, I know, born and raised in Vancouver. When I watch the “Robin Sparkles” I immediately thought of the one video that Alanis (she’ll always be just “Alanis” in Canada) will never ever live down. Check out the “Too Hot” video if you can track it down on the net.

HELEN IS RIGHT. The “Too Hot” video is way, way more over the top. The funny thing is that EVERY CANADIAN knew this ridiculous pop side to Alanis when she suddenly became a jagged little pill in the mid-90s. We were all like, “Show the ‘Too Hot’ video right now!!” but obviously Madonna’s huge marketing machine that was Maverick Records suppressed them from leaking out back then. Glad to see the truth coming out at last.

    More Alanis!

And yeah, this one kicks Matt Leblanc to the curb!
Always too hot, never too cold.

    gah, its so weird!
I mean I always knew these existed, but its so odd to contrast the 95 and onwards alanis with this one!
and the robin sparkles video was the funniest thing I’ve seen this month (or even year). I’ve watched the video like 4 times today.
Forget Barney. He’s too overhyped…Robin and Marshall are where its at on HIMYM!

Yes I agree with you, this video is one of the worst things ever. It is too disturbing for an untrained consumer without being prepared to see this cruelty in color.
Thank you for sharing this story with me !

‘Walk Away’…I remember this song from high school, have tried to forget it and now stuck in my head again. Thanks!!

I’m still impressed that How I Married Your Mother spent the enormous amount of time required to actually make an entire awful video for that song. I’m sure every Canadian that watched that episode immediately thought of Alanis. Sadly, there are so many Canadian music videos just like this. God bless “Check the O.R.”
This just makes me think of the South Park movie: “Now, now… the Canadian government has apologized for Bryan Adams on many occasions.”
