Judges begone! Who should win 'Dancing With the Stars'?

151916__dancing_lIf you tuned into last night’s steaming pile of DWTS randomness — featuring a disco ball bra, a musical disaster approaching the general vicinity of Hammertime, and this unfortunate tee — you know that the jerkstore judges ended up tying our two ever-glittering finalists, Emmitt Smith (pictured, left) and Mario Lopez (right). Agghhh! How did I know whom to vote for?!?!

Oh wait, I’ve never voted.

Their strange (but at this point, predictable) move concludes the judges’ season-long quest to become entirely useless. So, PopWatchers, are you glad they’ve bowed out, or do you think the judges should have chosen a frontrunner? WHO WILL WIN the meaningless disco ball trophy? And last but not least, WWKKD? (What would Kelly Kapowski, who was totally in the studio audience, do?)

What’s the point of having the judges award scores if all they’re going to do is take themselves out of the equation by giving each contestant the same exact score (FOR THE SECOND STRAIGHT WEEK) and basically reducing it to a popularity contest (Who do you like Emmitt or Slater?)
It’d be better to do it American Idol style, where the judges just chime in with occasionally-useful comments to help put things in perspective and not have them award scores.

  • Brad

Yeah well the “jerkstore” called, and they’re running out of you!

The judges passed the buck on this one. They didn’t want the responsibility of affecting the results so they left it up to the public. I’m not even sure they had any numbers lower than 9 to hold up. I haven’t seen an 8 in weeks. Hell, I could’ve danced there last night and I would’ve gotten a 10 as well.

Was it just me, or was the MC Hammer tribute painful to watch??

well in the finale the results are entirely up to the audience vote anyway. if the judges had one couple higher and then america voted for the other one, the ties goes in favor of the audience vote. so, no matter what the actual scores were this week, the audience is the deciding vote…go emmitt!

  • Sunny

Emmitt ALL THE WAY – he is way more sincere and genuine than Mario – and why does he wear those headbands during practice. yuk

After the whole let’s-give-Kelly-Monaco-perfect-tens-for-a-not-so-perfect-routine debacle, I’m not surprised the judges copped out. If they let America decide, they don’t have to take responsibility if there’s a backlash.

Judges are good for comments, but if they’re going to rig the contest and score everybody even, then what’s the use of having them? I’m on the Emmitt team. For a football player to be light on his feet like he is — Mario is the entertainer. Good dancer, cute and all, but you have to look at where he came from.

  • Sandra

    My vote goes for Mario.

  • Ashley

The judges must be blind. Emmitt and Cheryl’s free style was so much more entertaining than Mario and Karina’s love fest on the dance floor. I am so sick of the over-hyped love story between Mario and Karina; Emmitt is a gentlman who knows how to move! Ya, the MC Hammer thing may be form the 80s, but they did a great job, I mean the running man, what a risk but they pulled it off! GO EMMITT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Daryl

I think Emmitt and Mario were great this season (as was Joey, Vivica (who left far too soon) and Willa. But I’m gonna have to go with Mario, who consistently danced the best and whose free style was much better than Emmitt and Cheryl’s ode to MC Hammer. Mario’s tango last week was perfect and his freesytle was much more fun and energetic than Emmitt’s. Either way, it was a fun season with a lot of good dancing!

  • Karen

Emmitt all the way, baby! He enjoys himself and has gotten better all season. And I loved the MC routine… it’s Emmitt-Time! Mario and his partner are WAY TOO SMUG for me. What an ego… take it somewhere else. Go Emmitt!

  • Jenn

Emmitt came into this thing not knowing how to dance and improved week in and week out. Mario came in knowing how to move his body like a dancer, was great, but stayed the same every week. Therefore, I give my votes to Emmitt for his vast improvement week after week and his pure drive to do learn and grow. Both are great, I’ll give them that.

I am curious. What precisely are the rules for the freestyle event? If it is supposed to be a dance of original choreography, then Carrie Ann “former Fly Girl” Inaba should have said something about Cheryl Burke’s choreography. Watch the video for U Can’t Touch This. Every move except for the scissor slide was taken from that video, and the lifts were added in.
Karina seems to dance exactly to the beat of the song as we saw in her interpreation of Sir Duke. Her freestyle was original but the Kid N’ Play, and the floor spin were added in.
Last year it was backwards, Burke was original and the other choreographer was not. One or two familiar dance moves are fine, but when it looks as if it has been done before, it does not look original. With that said, either one could win and I think that Smith and Lopez did very well. BTW: Bruno and Len were right. Emmett missed on the first dismount and Mario got on the wrong foot on one of the promenades.

My vote goes for Cheryl Burke! That girl is a fighter!

  • Jen

Mario- You cheated on your wife (the Dorito girl)the night before you got married so she divorced you. Emmitt flew across the country every week to see his family. MARIO CHEATERS NEVER WIN!!!!!

  • E

Hurray! Emmitt and Cheryl won! And Karina with her sore loser comments and Mario with his sour face can take that all the way back to wherever they came from!

  • jakesboy

Congrats Emmitt and Cheryl!! The best man won!!

emmitt seems like a great guy and a wonderful dad, but the last time i checked,CHARISMA WAS NOT A DANCE MOVE !! if this were a dance competition, mario and karina would have won hands down,i realised more and more throughout this season, that it’s really a popularity contest.
mario and karina were the better dances in terms of technique.

  • Claudia

Does anybody know the name and who sings the “it takes two” from the Mario and Kareeeeeena freestyle?

  • Debbie

I guess I missed the point of Dancing with the Stars. I thought that the concept was that the best dancer was supposed to win.

  • Daryl

Emmitt is a charming, really nice guy. But not the best dancer. However, it was a great season of Dancing with the Stars and I hope next time we get such competitive dancers.

  • michael

I’m so glad someone else noticed Kapowski was in the audience!

  • matt

In order to settle the score, Barry Sanders must now challenge Emmitt Smith to a dance off.

  • Jasper

First off: Claudia “It Takes Two” is by Rob Bass and DJ Ez Rock.
Secondly: That rendition of it was pretty bad. Who is that band anyway? When Mario and Karina danced to “Bad” it really lived up to it’s title, and not the way Michael intended.
Third: I am a Mario and Karina fan. Actually I’m a Mario and Cheryl fan. I like Emmitt and he’s definitely charming and effortless. I think people like him because he’s like a scrappy Rocky to Mario’s super precise “Russian”. Mario also seems petrified that he’s going to be less than perfect and the work shows. He doesn’t seem like he’s having as much fun as Emmitt and he started out so good it’s hard to continue to top himself. The outcome like the trophy is meaningless. They both did a great job. Mario can go on and do Broadway (and no more dog shows!) and Emmitt can DWTS to all his Superbowl wins.

  • jake

Judges don’t matter on the finale — since they will always lean towards the public vote as they do all season.

  • Phil

There is so much jealousy for Mario that it is unbelieveable that it still continues — he cheated on his wife, he has previous dance experience (not ballroom I might add) — so many put downs — but who cares!!!! A star was born on the dance floor and in the hearts and minds of millions the minute that Mario Lopez stepped on the dance floor.

  • Ed

This is exactly why I didn’t start watching DWTS!
When I heard Mario and Joey were going to be on it, I swore I was going to start watching. But somehow I knew that the two favored ones wouldn’t win. After Chris Daugherty lost AI, I’m jaded when it comes to reality t.v.

  • Tisa

The best man won!! To Mario and Karina, cheaters and sore losers never win. I loved watching Emmitt improve week after week and the fact that he didn’t have any previous dance experience, made his win all the more sweet. It may be somewhat of a popularity contest, but Emmitt was both popular and was a great dancer. I also loved Emmitt’s partner Cheryl and Joey Lawrence.

  • Kayla

Although I absolutely loved Emmitt, Mario was the best dancer; no question about it; this finale was exactly like the last time, when Stacey was robbed of the title, just like Mario was robbed last night. And to all of you who call him and Karina “sore losers” what exactly makes one a “happy loser”? Mario and Karina were OBVIOUSLY disappointed, as any “normal” person would have been, especially when one has the confidence of having been the best; or would you have expected a different reaction from Emmitt and Cheryl if the result would have been different? Honestly now. This was a competition, people. Wake up and smell the Sanka…..
