Chris Cornell's Bond theme: 'Royale' with cheese

154041__chris_lI’ve always wondered why Bond theme songs continue to cause such a fuss. It just seems like there hasn’t been a decent title song for the series in a long time. Speaking of which, Casino Royale‘s theme, "You Know My Name," sung by Chris Cornell (pictured), is officially out now. (PopWatch found the song online for you back in September). The Audioslave frontman (a career choice I haven’t quite forgiven the former Soundgarden-er for) tries his darnedest to make a memorable anthem for Bond to rock to, but in recent tradition, fails utterly.

Not that I’m surprised. I mean, the last few Bond songs haven’t had shelf lives longer than their respective movies’ opening weekends (have you been thinking much about Sheryl Crow’s "Tomorrow Never Dies" or Madonna’s hideous "Die Another Day" lately?) "You Know My Name" is fine for background music as Bond speeds off in his Aston Martin, but with cheesy lines like "I’ve seen diamonds cut through harder men" and "The coldest blood runs through my veins," not even Cornell’s powerhouse vocals can save the tune.

When oh when will a popstar rise to the occasion and give 007 the theme song he is so due? (I’m not holding my breath.) And which Bond themes can you still listen to without cringing?

I’d like to see what Sting could do with a Bond theme. As for themes that exist , I’m ashamed that I like Sheena Easton’s “For Your Eyes Only.” And just for the purposes of nostalgia, I could bear to hear Duran Duran’s “View to a Kill.”

I still love Duran Duran’s “A View to a Kill.” It’s still the best one in the recent past. I still also like Goldfinger and Diamonds are Forever by Shirley Bassey. I’d like the Bond people to go a little old school and see what Michael Buble could do with a Bond theme.

To be honest, i really liked “The World is Not Enough” by Garbage, even though it was from the worst of the Brosnan 007 movies. They even had a badass video to go with it!

  • Stacey

A View to a Kill still rules as far as Bond themes.

I loved “The World Is Not Enough” by Garbage, despite (yes, I agree with Victor Perez) the fact it was from the worst Bond in…ever.
I wish that the producers had’ve gone with original choice Goldfrapp to do the theme song for Casino Royale. How much would that have ruled??

It’s not just the singers. It’s the people who write the songs, too. Some of the best songs were written by great composers and lyricists: Marvin Hamlisch, John Barry, Leslie Bricusse, Paul McCartney. Nowadays, they pluck some obscure person from some obscure band to do the duty.

I liked the “The World Is Not Enough” by Garbage and just like “a View To A Kill”, the videoes are better than the movies. I found the video for “Tomorrow Never Dies” on YouTube. I like it, too. My favorite Bond theme is still “Live And Let Die”.

I know I’m repeating what’s already been said, but “A View to a Kill” and “Live and Let Die.” They both solidly stand on their own.

Either of Shirley Bassey’s bond themes- “Goldfinger” and “Diamonds are forever”

The absolute best Bond theme, the one that has stood the test of time and is the standard by which all others should be judged is Carly Simon’s “Nobody Does It Better”. Goldfinger is, of course, a sentimental favorite since it was the first actual “Bond song”. “A View to a Kill” by Duran-Duran is still passable, as is Paul McCatrney’s “Live and Let Die”. And Jane, don’t feel embarassed, i still like Sheena Easton’s “For Your Eyes Only” also. Of course, I’m an old fogey!!

“Goldfinger” sounds good, and I liked “GoldenEye” enough to buy the single. Of course, I love Tina Turner, so…
I think Beyonce or Christina could probably do something sultry/energetic for the next movie.

  • Kate

Repeating other sentiments but the best have been Live and Let Die or A View To A Kill.

I liked “The World is Not Enough” by Garbage and “GoldenEye” by Tina Turner in recent times. They had great opening titles in the films to go with them.
Of the classics, I still listen to “Nobody Does It Better” by Carly Simon a lot (I think it’s the best theme) and “Goldfinger” by Shirley Bassey is a timeless classic. Those are the top two. The other three spots in a Top Five would probably be “For Your Eyes Only” by Sheena Easton, “Live and Let Die” by The Wings, and “Diamonds Are Forever” by Shirley Bassey. They are absolutely the standards by which all Bond themes are judged.

Dude, Die Another Day was a good song!

  • Vicky

3 cheers for “The World is Not Enough” by Garbage! Awesome song, rockin’ video, great band!
