Trailer Blazer: 'Spider-Man 3'

94813__spiderman_lWas the hype for last night’s "premiere" of the new Spider-Man 3 trailer (watch it here) warranted? Let’s see, we got:
- Tobey in the superhot black Spidey suit.
- Tobey busting out of the superhot black Spidey suit.
- The comfort of knowing that likable Thomas Haden Church (Sandman) will, in fact, have a post-Oscar nod career.
- The reminder that while Kirsten Dunst’s voice can be annoying ("Do you wanna push me away?"), we’d much rather watch her than Kate Bosworth.
- The realization that Harry is actually the only role we care to see James Franco in (or is that just my experience watching the Annapolis trailer talking?).
- Proof that Topher Grace is always a welcome sight (although EW.com poster Phil has already taken issue with his highlights).
- Plans for May 4, 2007.
What did you think?

Amazing trailer! I am so saving $20 in a jar now for May.

  • Jeremiah

I wanted to see some of Bryce Dallas Howard’s character Gwen and some of Topher as Venom. It was a good first trailer but I hope we get to see a lot more real soon.

  • Howard

I saw most of it, and it looked terrific, just like the last one did. I need to watch it again, but I still stand by my belief that Kirsten Dunst was miscast as MJ. She was never supposed to be a “Girl Next Door” (figuratively) type; Mary Jane was always the voluptuous, way out of Peter’s league, but with a good heart. I don’t know who I’d have gone with (maybe Alicia Witt), but Kirsten ain’t it.

  • Laura

Wow! I want to go see it now, lol!

  • marykate

    RAD!!

  • Mozz

    Wow!

  • fredric

Geez. Leave Kirsten alone. She’s given the movie the gravity it needed.

  • AJH

So now Spider Man is ripping off The Mummy and Lord of the Rings? Ouch. Not impressed.

  • John

Can’t wait to see Topher as Venom…those clips will be in lockdown until the premiere!

  • Casey

Not a big fan of Kirsten Dunst in these movies, but must agree that she’s Meryl Streep compared to Kate Bosworth. Nevertheless, I think the trailer is awesome.

  • matt

hey AJH, I seriously doubt just because they have the sandman turning into sand they are ripping off The Mummy, I mean hello, this character is in the comic books that have been around for awhile. Get a clue and stop being so pissy.

  • Justin Mohareb

Wait, Sandman is the guy that killed Uncle Ben? That’s just wrong. It looks pretty , but hopefully that plot twist will be played out better than it sounds.

  • Alex

    AJH –
Just because something showed up in a movie 2 years ago doesn’t mean it wasn’t already done 30 years ago in the comics.
I will say this about the movie, though. If you’re expecting to see a lot of Venom, you’ll probably be disappointed. I think they’re saving him for Spider-Man 4.

  • donner

I agree with your comments Mandi…everything looked great and not that they had screwed it up…can’t wait to see this puppy in May!

I’m a little wary of the idea of trying to incorporate three major villains into this film–isn’t that what ended up making the (first) Batman film franchise ridiculously overwrought?–but I have to say
that this trailer looks pretty damn cool. The Sandman effects are awesome, and they even kept his dorky green-striped shirt from the comics.
Is this the best superhero movie franchise ever? On the basis of this trailer, I’m prepared to offer my full geek endorsement.
I’m not down with the Sandman being Uncle Ben’s killer, though. Where’s that coming from?

  • brandonk

Can’t wait! Looks like another home run from Raimi!

  • Josh

I think James Franco still has potential as a film star, and if he’s not finding the right roles, he should return to TV. Don’t forget he was honored for his performance as James Dean and he excelled at playing a stoner/slacker on “Freaks and Geeks.” I might actually watch another crime drama besides the original “CSI” if he was the lead.

  • milo

ok people, get off kirsten, she has been fantastic on the first two and will be just as good on this one by the looks of it.
yes, the uncle Ben killer twist is total left field.
also, what’s with the Topher/venon thing? have you not see the same preview i did? topher is not venon….well at least until the last 2 minutes of the movie that is.
and one last thing, whatever happened to Bryce Dallas? she was on the teaser and now she’s practically erase out of the picture? hmmm…..

  • Ceballos

    The movie looks great.
I can’t believe they’re going to have Topher as Venom in this movie…and if they do, it’ll be toward the end to set up Spider-Man 4.
I thought I heard a Godzilla noise from Sandman when he’s growling near the side of a building. Oh well. Looks incredible.
Wish there would’ve been a healthy helping of Bryce Dallas Howard (and a LITTLE less Dunst)

  • Jim

I don’t think that Sandman as Uncle Ben’s killer thing will play out the way they make it sound in the previews. Sam Raimi knows better than to piss off fans like that. I used to be into comic books and I know how a comic book fan’s mind works. All hell will break loose if they make him Uncle Ben’s killer.

  • MIMI

I’ve never been into comic books or movies based on comic books. I’ve never seen any of the X-Men movies, but I absolutely LOVE the Spider-Man movies. I can’t wait to see it! I just hope the Uncle Ben killer twist makes sense. That, so far, is the only thing that makes me nervous about this one.

  • The Other Kyle

Phil is an idiot. And you can quote me.
Topher plays Eddie Brock and Eddie has blonde spiked hair. End of story. You can’t do Eddie without the blonde hair. He is the Anti-Peter Parker. Everything on him is opposite.
So get over it Phil. He’s perfect in the role.
That being said, this trailer is fairly underwhelming. We see more Sandman, but other than that it’s basically the same stuff from the teaser. And no VENOM. Boo and shame on Raimi for 1.) Keeping Venom’s look a secret this long 2.) Not giving us one shot of him in trailer. that’s just mean. fans having dying for a glimpse for a long time and we’re begging/expecting a shot in this trailer.
There’s no new info in the trailer and just expanded shots from the teaser. This is the first disappointment that Raimi has brought with the franchise. It’s not a big deal. But I expected more.

  • Emma

I’m pretty sure that Sandman didn’t kill Uncle Ben, and someone’s setting up Spidey. When they’re fighting in the subway, it sounds like Sandman doesn’t know anything about Uncle Ben. Also, I can’t see them having Venom be in the movie for very long. I agree with Alex, that they’re saving him for the next movie. All in all, the trailer looks awesome and I can’t wait to see this!

  • Jamal

Im disappointed we didnt get to see Venom while ComicCon got to see it!!!!!

  • T.L.

For some reason, I’ve always been underwhelmed by the trailers for the Spiderman movies. I’m afraid this is no exception. I have faith, however, that Raimi and co. will pull off a film that’s just as awesome as the first two.
I am, however, concerned that they’re really going to try to convince us that Sandman killed Uncle Ben. That would be a piece of revisionist history too hard to swallow….

  • LauraM

This looks amazing! I am so there!

  • Stef

Yeah seriously Mandi, if this is the only role you like James Franco in, you must not have seen him as James Dean or Daniel on Freaks and Geeks!

  • carmen

Can’t wait till it opens-the suspense is killing me! I absolutely love Tobey Maguire and can’t imagine anyone bringing to the role of Spiderman that Tobias has. I hope this isn’t the end of his portrayal-if it is-that will be the end of my interest. There could never be another that embodies the role of Spidey. PS-loved the trailer!!!

  • carlos dominguez

Where was Venom? Other than that looks great. I think the drama (human) will increase greatly now that MJ and Peter have a relationship. Thomas Hadden looks great and Topher Grace, i am becoming a fan of his ever since In Good Company with Dennis Quaid.

  • jaime

BLAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH WHEN IS IT NEXT YEAR??
