The 'Grey's Anatomy' feud: The McApology

203826__burke_l_1Under the heading of, "It’s About Damn Time!": Isaiah "McAngry" Washington (pictured) has issued a statement of apology to People magazine regarding an Oct. 9 onset altercation with Patrick Dempsey in which he reportedly referred to a third Grey’s Anatomy cast member as a "faggot." (On Oct. 19, Grey’s star T.R. Knight announced he was gay.)

"I sincerely regret my actions and the unfortunate use of words during the recent incident on-set," Washington said in his statement to People. "Both are beneath my own personal standards…. I have nothing but respect for my coworkers… and have apologized personally to everyone involved."

If Washington’s apology is sufficient for the Grey’s cast and crew, fair enough, although it would’ve been nice if he’d come around sooner, and perhaps been a little more direct with the language in his public statement. Just a thought, but how about leading with "I’m sorry"?

As for any future fallout, in a story in this Friday’s issue of EW,a Touchstone TV spokeswoman says rumors of Washington’s firing and/orreplacement are "unequivocally false," while series creator ShondaRhimes tells People such speculation is "offensive," addingthat "the [idea] that one black man was interchangeable with anotherseemed disturbing to me."

What do you think PopWatchers? Are you ready for Washington’sinevitable contrition tour of Leno, Larry King, Oprah, et al? Would yourather skip that shtick and get back to sighing longingly whilewatching Grey’s? And more importantly, will Washington’s off-screen antics affect your ability to swoon over the Burke-Cristina romance?

about damn time is right. we’d have heard a lot more about this and mcdreamy’s head would have been on the block if washington had used the “n” word.

    sorry – meant dempsey

    Let’s move on already…

My thoughts exactly, Tiffany. If roles were reversed in that way, Dempsey would be fired. Washington should be fired for his use of the derogatory term. And it took too long for him to apologize.

I agree with Slezak and Tiffany. It’s been TWO WEEKS since his fight with Patrick Dempsey and horrible treatment of T.R. Knight, who was only trying to stop it. And where is the outrage for Washington’s verbal slur of Knight and his sexuality. I hate to admit it, but had Dempsey, or anyone else, called Washington a certain racial slur, the sh*t would have hit the fan and firings would have been imminent.

Frankly his late apology leaves me cold. It seems forced and insincere. I will continue to watch the show but I have lost respect for what I thought was a good actor.

For me, the jury is still out on Washington. As a gay, I don’t think he’s that stupid to say something so vicious – especially in Hollywood (with the gay mafia and all).
And even if he did, I believe there has to be an understanding that the cast memebers have with one another. The show is heavily divese, how can there not be some joking going on behind the scenes.
But if he did, shame on him because as a gay hispanic, this guy gives me jungle fever ; )

I think we ALL know he’ll be on Oprah in a month

“the [idea] that one black man was interchangeable with another seemed disturbing to me.”
Hey remember how last season on Desperate Housewives they replaced one black man for another….hmmm makes you wonder what she was referring to…

It wouldn’t be the first time a tv character was replaced. Darren from Bewitched, anyone? Becky on Roseanne? Hello!

  • Tyler

I completely agree. If roles were reversed, someone would be fired. I also agree that the “apology” seems insincere. I really hope Washington gets the boot.

I have mixed feelings on this one. On the one hand, Tiffany is right and had the “N”-word or similar epithet been dropped, the whole thing woulda blown up into an issue of epic proportions. And it’s awfully interesting timing that the public apology has been made after T.R. Knight’s own public revelation–which may well have taken place mostly to quelch any rumors of Knight’s sexuality. In fact, I’m a bit disappointed he wasn’t more open previously (as far as I am aware, anyway).
On the other hand, the whole thing appears to have been taken care of at the source, between those involved. Had the story not been leaked, it would be a private issue that has been resolved.
I won’t forget, but I think for now that I’m willing to overlook.

who gives a fcuk if he’s black? he’s an a$$h0l3. fire the idiot.
The producer just said that (well scripted) line to throw everyone off the trail by evoking the untouchable race flag. It works, it shuts everyone up! But Shonda Rhymes knows, as everyone in Hollywood knows that EVERY ACTOR IS REPLACABLE. There are 3 million of them in LA and less than .01% are famous on this level. Plenty to choose from, not to mention plenty of stars who would take the job.
Just make sure you replace him with another hot guy, Mk?
Remember that if anyone said anything like that or acted like that at a normal job, they’d be escorted out immediately and quickly sued by their coworkers. But in today’s Mel Gibson, Ken Delay, George W Bush, Isaiah, Rush Limbaughtomized Universe anyone with some power can do or say whatever they want and get away with it. Welcome to hell people!

Most of you have said it already, but I don’t think it can be said too many times. If ANY Grey’s Anatomy cast member had used the n-word to describe Washington or any other black actor/actress on the show, it would not be taken as lightly as the Shonda Rimes and the GA crew seem to be taking this.

  • Craig G.

He is by no means Mel Gibson, but what about that slur incident? Racial slurs are by no means appropriate at any time, N-word, or slurs against Jews…But as a gay man, I’m really offended that the F-word can be used so hatefully, and (hardly) no accountability is demanded. T.R. Knight should have been more outraged or something!
