Was Uli robbed on 'Project Runway'?

161852__uli_lHello? 911? Yes, hi there, I’d like to report a robbery. No, it’s not in progress, but I’ve got it all on tape. They televised it on Bravo, during last night’s season finale of Project Runway. What’s that? You didn’t see it? Well let me give you the scoop. The final two was a showdown between Uli Herzner (pictured, left) and Jeffrey Sebelia. Now mind you, I wasn’t Uli’s biggest fan going into Olympus Fashion Week. I’d even argued a month ago for a Michael-Laura-Jeffrey final three, due to Uli’s previous lack of versatility. But from her opening salvo (that brown zebra number with the detailed neckline) to the glimmering silver shirt dress (with sleeves!) to the insanely hot yellow bikini, Uli rocked the final runway. And her last look, that triumphant jade halter dress with a slit up to Northern Canada, yowza! As Heidi said, every woman in America would wear an Uli.

On the flip side, we had Jeffrey. Putting aside his consistent misogyny — and yes, tossing around terms like "frigid" and "feminazi" qualifies him in my book — and the way he kept flashing his armpits on the runway, how about the fact that half of his final collection was hideous? Like the wildly unflattering blue minidress that made his model look five months pregnant. Or that grim black dress with something grey tied over it. I even disliked the much discussed green and white zipper dress. All it needed was a couple of cords and Marilinda could’ve hung it in her kitchen window to keep out the sun. So yes, please head to Bravo HQ, and put Michael Kors, Heidi Klum, Fern Mallis, and as much as it pains me, even the bewitching Nina Garcia, on the paddywagon. We’ll let a jury of their PopWatch peers decide their guilt or innocence.

What say you all? Did Uli have the superior collection, or was Jeffrey the better overall designer?

No, Uli wasn’t robbed. I do agree that I would most wear her stuff but she did not evolve in the way that Jeff did. her collection still had wild prints and the same bohemian touches. It was beautiful though. note that Jeff was never my favorite but I see how he followed their advice to be more feminine while still being true to his alternative fashion sense. Honestly, I thought Laura’s collection was more beautiful than Uli’s. I adored Mike throughout & think him capable of being the superior overall designer BUT the advice by the judges’ some episodes ago that purely sportwear was his strength was fatal. I actually think he excels with the cocktail dress. all r uber talented & will have no prob finding work!

No way Michael this is where we disagree. Jeffrey’s collection was far superior to everyone else’s. Yeah the guy might be a jackass, but he made some amazing things. His collection was inspired, cohesive, and beautiful and I know a lot of women, myself included, who would wear every single thing he sent down that runway. I don’t think Uli’s collection was as versitile as Jeff’s and no where near as youthful and fun. Not to worry though I’m sure we’ll be seeing plenty of Uli orignials in the future. I’m happy for Jeff and his family!

I’m sorry Michael, but to me the biggest shock came in the way the disregarded LAURA. Come on, she shows more taste, grace, and class in one finger than Michael Kors has shown in the last three years. Her collection may not have been selected as the top winner, but their criticism of her made me think that none of them should be in the fashion business. Let Heidi become the baby Machine she wants to become, let Nina go back to hide in her office and let Mr. Kors concentrate on just designing for a while, which in turn may produce something more innovative than he’s been since he joined this critical cult.

I thought Jeffrey’s line was the most innovative. He was my least favorite contestant but I think he did the best job showing a diverse, innovative line. However, Laura and Uli both could have easily won. Both of their clothes will sell. Poor Michael. His clothes just lack any sophistication. He was much better in the challenges. As usual, the person who wins challenges and is a favorite to win, doesn’t win it all.

Uli AND Laura would be totally robbed if I didn’t know better : fashions shows always are crazy and unwearable, and it’s kinda of the point.
It doens’t matter anyway, because we all know these two very charming ladies will be employed forever now!
Maybe we should have a contest on who’s gonna wear some Laura on the Oscars next year? I can just see Nicole Kidman wearing some black feathered thing…

I thought Uli’s collection was superior to the others. I thought it was interesting, innovative and sexy. I thought Jeffery’s was silly and cartoonish, and if that’s the way the fashion trends are going, I want no part of it. His zipper dress was cool, and that’s it.
Moreover, I would like to say that Jeffrey portrayed himself as a huge creep all season long, and that fact that he was a drug addict does not make him sympathetic to me. Oh wah, you were on drugs by your own choice. It’s not like you were, oh I don’t know, born in a scary Communist country that you had to escape just to be a creative human being.

I agree completely! Uli’s dresses are beautiful and i think that she should have won.

WHAT THE #*&(@#*@( ARE YOU DOING???
Jeebus, your recap writers finally figured out not to put give-away photos or headlines on their columns, but you put the winner in your blogwatch headline??
Seriously – I like EW, but if I can’t trust you people not to screw me then I have to take this site off of my list. Yes, you do a lot of things better than the competition, but KEEPING YOUR “MOUTH” SHUT, at LEAST on your front page, really is enough to keep readers like me from coming.

I was looking forward to Michael’s collection, but he did a tribute to the fashion conscious video ho. Uli’s collection was sexy and her models were hot. Jeffrey’s collection reminded me of Robin Hood for some reason.

    Yes, Uli was sooo robbed!
Not only did she have a superior final collection – she was a superior designer (not to mention better person – although, granted, the show’s not called Project Person) throughout the season.
She took the advice of the judges and stepped out of her comfort zone to deliver a collection that was versatile yet thoroughly her. What did that get her? The No. 2 spot.

Anyone know what song Uli played during her final show???? I loved it!

  • JenJen

I think Uli will find success no matter what. I would have been fine with either Jeffrey or Uli winning.

  • poochie

As I said in the TV Watch section…Michael is currently dating Brandy, so to me he is the true winner in all of this. All of the designers will get work in there genres!!!!

  • EM

If it had to not be Laura, then yes – Uli was robbed. Jeffrey’s point of view is schizophrenic at best. Laura’s line was conhesive and beautifully crafted. Uli’s stuff was a definite step up from her previous work. I was disappointed in Michael who had been my pick until the last few episodes.

  • e

    Yes, she was!

  • Michael H.

Yes, Uli was definitely robbed! I had no problem whatsoever with Jeffrey’s personality – it’s his collection that I just did not like AT ALL! Not to mention the fact that the judges even commented on the one piece of Jeffrey’s (the long dress) they all agreed they hated – AND the fact that he went over budget by $200+. Although I’m sure his collection was actually improved by losing the wigs – which would have made his show even more hideous.
Not only did Uli have the best collection (sorry, Michael!) but my favorite single outfit of any of the final designs – the silver mini-dress!
PROJECT RUNWAY has now consistently placed the BEST designer in the #2 slot:
    Season 1 – Kara Saun
    Season 2 – Daniel Vosovic
    Season 3 – Uli Herzner
