What do you watch when you're too tired to shut off the TV?

Categories: Music, Television

Over the weekend, I was slightly intoxicated and extremely ready for bed — which obviously meant that instead of falling asleep, I should see what was playing on the ol’ DVR/life partner. It was at this beautiful moment (~4:30 a.m. ET) that I discovered The Vault on VH1 Classic.

My roommate and I began channel surfing, but it was the kind where neither person could actually handle the burden of the remote. We kept passing it off to each other like a relay baton. The exchanges were smooth, but fading fast, were definitely in last place of the race. And then: The Vault. An obscure Laura Branigan video. We sat in rapturous silence for three minutes not knowing what in God’s name we were watching. But there were the credits. "That was Laura Branigan?" we spat out. And it was. We had just salivated over every single frame of extreme bangs, masked dance sequences, and closeups of heeled ankle boots in a Laura Branigan video. We were so cool.

After a similarly life-changing viewing of "Sheriff Fatman" by Carter the Unstoppable Sex Machine, it was settled. I’m recording The Vault whenever it’s on (most mornings, 4-6 a.m.). I no longer have beef with VH1 Classic, which used to play the same videos in the same order at least twice a day. (People may need to see the Traveling Wilburys perform live once a day, but that’s it.)

Who’s with me on The Vault? And what noncommittal programming do you zone out in front of when you have barely an attention span and/or pulse?

At pretty much any hour of any given day, there is usually some Tribune produced sci fi program on (Andromeda, Farscape), so I’ll watch that or Star Trek reruns, which also seem to be on at pretty much any given time of day on some channel or another. My tastes go towards pure gossip garbage and camp addiction in the late night.

“What Not to Wear” or any of the house-flipping shows.

THE VAULT is indeed a great program. Videos I haven’t seen in decades, and some I never even saw then. I have been Tivoing it since it premiered a couple months ago. The Saturday/Sunday episode is a new one, and it gets repeated in the 4-6 am EST time slot a few other nights a week, sometimes with a video or two changed.

Food Network is perfect to have on in the background. At any point, you can leave the room, come back, watch a little, read a magazine (EW, of course), watch some more, get online, watch some more, etc…and never feel like you missed anything.

Adult Swim on Cartoon Network. Love most of the shows and I usually leave it on for background sound, though I often get distracted by Robot Chicken. The only downside to this is waking up to some of the more annoying children’s cartoons.

Since I got my DVR, I don’t have to get non-committal zone out shows.
But, every spare 40 minutes this weekend went into viewing Veronica Mars season 2 on DVD. I had seen the episodes before. Now, with the DVD I can clear the episodes off the DVR. It’s getting crowded this year.

Food Network is definitely the low-brain-wave network of choice. (“Tonight, on Unwrapped…the history of celery! Followed by sixteen back-to-back episodes of Emeril’s Kicked-Up Arbor Day Celebration!”) Ahhhh…sweet sweet inactivity.

I ALWAYS tune into the E Channel, it’s like my homepage when I turn on the t.v. If nothing is on that channel, I surf, if I still find nothing, I go back to E. The Girls Next Door, The Soup, The 10, any of the 101 shows, or THS is worth sitting through. Even though I’ve probably seen every one about 300 times, I’m still lazy to change the channel.

I’m with ya Cranky. In my house it’s the Food Network because you don’t really know a food until Alton Brown has thoroughly explained it’s every minute essence to you in scientific detail.

Ditto me on The Food Network.
It started out being just Iron Chef American, but now I love Throwdown and Challenge and just almost anything on.
The weirdest part is I would NEVER eat any of this stuff. I’m the plainest eater around.

VH1 All Access — There’s no voice like Rachel Perry’s to let me know that it’s Saturday afternoon, and I’m thisclose to naptime.

  • LindaLou

What not to Wear or Trading Spaces. Great stuff to nap to during Saturday afternoon couch-time. Great to wake up, knowing you missed the blah-parts and to find the transformation complete!

  • Veronica

Any “I love….” shows on VH1 are good saturday nap shows.

Oh, thank you Verizon Fios TV, for bringing me the aural and visual wallpaper known as the Crime and Investigation Network. Now I can hear Bill Kurtis’s voice 24/7, instead of just on occasional eps of American Justice and as the narrator of Anchorman. All day long, I can zone out to Cold Case Files repackaged as Investigative Reports, City Confidential masquerading as Notorious, and my favorite, old eps of the History Channel’s Infamous Murders in lieu of commercials. After all, one can’t hear about John George Haigh dissolving Mrs. Durand-Deacon in an acid bath often enough, now can they?

  • Elizabeth

Law & Order is usually my standby tv show. Seems to always be on.

  • Chris McVetta

    The Weather Channel.
Its constant and “reassuring” Orwellian-like chatter and jazz tones in the wee hours of the night soothes this savage beast right to sleep…
The id and I – “We’re bringing sexy back!”

Add another one for The Food Network. I’m also going to agree with Paige– it started with just turning on re-runs of Iron Chef and now I’m obsessed. Is it wrong to say Throwdwn with Bobby Flay is my new favorite show? When I was watching the cake challenge last night at 1am and saw a commercial for Throwdown with Bobby Flay: Cheesesteak this Thursday and actually went, “Ooo, yes!” I knew I had a problem.

  • nova

    CSI.
    It’s ALWAYS on.

  • aa

food network and court tv. all those forensic shows i start watching one drift off and there’s another one when i roll over.

  • A. Nonymous

“The Vault” was the single greatest two hour block of videos ever! Marvelously obscure stuff. I don’t think it’s on anymore, though. Damn them!
The Weather Channel is something I could leave on for hours at a time. Smooth Jazz noodlings … lots of “fly shorties” … information which may or may not be of use to you … perfect background.
