Saget's second coming: Are you ready?

Categories: Television

93113__bob_lI’ve never made a secret of my appreciation for Bob Saget. And apparently, I’m not alone. The producers of Deal or No Deal thought he was the only host for their new five-week quiz show, 1 vs. 100, which premieres tonight on NBC at 9 p.m. (then moves Oct. 20 to Full House’s old 8 p.m. slot). Why Saget? I’m guessing it’s because a) the man can wear a suit b) he’ll actually shake contestants’ hands and c) even though we know he likes to talk dirty — see: appearances in The Aristocrats and on Entourage, the rap video ”Rollin’ with Saget,” the stand-up single ”Danny Tanner Was Not Gay,” and the forthcoming movie Farce of the Penguins — we’re still surprised when Bob works blue. (A preview of tonight‘s TV-PG-rated 1 vs. 100 premiere: A contestant asks, ”Who would turn down $100,000?” Saget answers, ”I know a girl who would.”)

As for the obvious question — will 1 vs. 100 be a Deal-sized hit? –the answer is: quite possibly. Another successful foreign import (it originated in Holland), the show shares DOND’s ability to make you yell at the television but actually tests more than your luck and guts. The top prize is still $1 million, which you win only by outlasting a group of 100 people, known as the Mob, in a game of multiple-choice, one-strike-and-you’re-out trivia. The player earns money each time a member of the Mob is retired. He can end the game after any correct answer and walk away with the current kitty; but if he continues and answers incorrectly, the Mob splits the pot. Tonight’s Mob includes everyone from a few DOND models to Ken Freakin’ Jennings (which would’ve scored Saget a kick square in the nuts if I’d been a contestant). I know I probably shouldn’t reveal this, but SPOILER ALERT: Jennings is not among the eight Mob members who believe that the Hawaiian appetizer often found on an Asian-cuisine menu is a ”Ka-Ka Combo” or ”Du-Du Delight.”

What do you think: Will 1 vs. 100 be a hit? Will Saget finally be identified by a credit that’s not Full House or America’s Funniest Home Videos? Will I ever get out of the $30,000-range in the show’s online game?

Bob Saget’s hilarious. I’ve never seen him live, but a friend of mine has and says he did this ridiculously inappropriate (but funny as hell) bit about the Olsen twins.

Saw him this summer do stand up and out of the 7 or 8 comedians – he was the best one and honestly never expected that. Will this be as big as DOND – not sure – but will attempt to watch it tonight to see.

This has got to be better than DOND, because you have to at least have some intelligence to play this game. My husband and I will be watching.

I caught Saget doing his thing on Chocolate Sundays at the Laugh Factory a few years back. He had us brothers and sisters in stitches!
I hate game shows, but I’ll tivo it for sagets sake.

  • GT

Saget rocks as the narrator on How I Met Your Mother.

I love Bob Saget. Is it wrong to think he’s hot? If not, I KNOW it’s wrong to think he looks very cute couple-y in those pix he takes these days with the Olsen Twins.

I once saw a mob of kids surround Saget at the Metropolitan Museum of art. I got his autograph but at the time he did not seem very happy about the kids. It was 1994. He is a funny guy as a comedian, filithy but funny. But now I see why he was not happy, because at the time he was seen as “The Funniest Home Videos/Full House guy” and not as a comedian.
This show looks like Hollywood Squares meets Jeopardy. The questions need to be a lot harder to make the show interesting. I mean come on! Who’s name did Steve Carell scream when he was waxed in the film “The 40 Year Old Virgin”? If someone does not know that answer( Kelly Clarkson), then they don’t read the newspaper, use an automobile or have electricity in their homes.

I think I’m going to tune into this one. It seems interesting. I don’t watch Deal or No Deal because I honestly just don’t get it. …That game is so confusing! And it takes no skill whatsoever to win. But this game seems a lot better and I do love Bob Saget (from Full House, Entourage, and his appearence on Jamie Kennedy’s recent show on MTV).

Cal, The trick to DOND is to find the lowest sum possible. The lower the number the greater your winning sum will be. However, if you keep on chosing the higher sums on the board, the total offered will be low.

After seeing him in Half Baked and in the Aristocrats, Saget’s “blue” credentials are totally legit with me. I’ve seen his standup when he’s allowed to swear, and the guy is smut-tacular!
However, I could never get into Full House and always found the show to be a little too saccharine for my taste.

the only skill DOND requires is x-ray vision.

  • skbnwinters

    DOND confusing? Takes no skill??
Whoever thinks that has a IQ of a pigeon!
I.E., I just watched a lady turn down $196,000 when the odds were 83% against her….DO THE MATH, LADY!
It takes CHARACTER, LUCK, SKILL, GOD’S BLESSINGS to win DOND. “You can’t be GREEDY” is one of the secrets. (I was one of those people yelling,”Take the money, stupid!” at my TV. She should have listened to me! ;O)

  • Jenny

This show was surprisingly good. I’ll keep watching. Some of the Mob were quite stupid.

  • cali girl

these are the easiest game show questions ever and some of the people…i was astounded at the level of stupidity. and bob saget…good lord – i never knew what a dirty perv he could be until i sat through 13 hours of taping for this show (my mob group never even got to be on tv…we were all called back to be mob members but they just kept telling us all day that we’d be up next – instead we got stuck being audience members all damn day – what a waste of a day that was). they definitely censored most of his commentary during the taping – dirty but hilarious.
