As you’ve probably read, after Barbra Streisand’s mocking duet with a George Bush impersonator drew tepid audience response — and one very persistent heckler — at her Madison Square Garden concert last night, the 64-year-old diva flew into an expletive-laced tirade. What you might not realize (since it hasn’t actually happened) is that Babs has commissioned new lyrics to her signature hit, ”People,” as a response to the imbroglio. As you’ve come to expect, PopWatch has the scoop. (And click here if you need a refresher on the melody.)
People
Please be quiet people
You’re the luckiest people in the world
And hecklers, there should be no hecklers
You’re supposed to be on my side
Not spouting partisan pride
Acting more like children than children
My fans
Are very polite people
And the quietest people in the world
I’m one lady
One very funny lady
You shelled out the big, big bucks
Now sit down, shut the f*** up
No more nasty outbursts
But first
Let me make a challenge, people
Vote for Democratic people
And we’ll hopefully change the world

Nothing scares PEOPLE away from voting Democrat more than Barbra Sreisand opening her mouth.
The important question is…did anyone get footage of her tirade? This moment SOOOO needs to be You-Tubed!
I couldn’t agree w/ you more Mike.
To quote Jon Stewart on celebrity involvement in politics, “Everything [Barbara Streisand] touches turns to s**t.”
I dunno’. I’m no uber-conservative, but I just don’t feel the need to take my political cues from a singer.
Can it be possible that there are any Republicans out
there who don’t know what to expect if they visit the
House of Barbra? She remembers we have “Freedom of
Speech!!”
Rosie mentioned this tirade briefly today on the View, only to tell us to wait for Walters’ return tomorrow b/c she wants to be the one to tell the story…Babs on Babs, I predict a big nauseating pro-Streisand smoochfest. Ick.
that’s incredible! Ba-Ba Walters giving big-mouth Rosie orders to clam up so that she can do her play-by-play on tomorrow’s show. B.W. is always concerned about her relevance and I’ll bet(just like Newbie) that she’ll be lip-locked onto Bab’s posterior so that come November sweeps time she’ll bag at least one interview that won’t put her waning audience to sleep. It’s always necessary for her to ingratiate herself to someone for a future “get” before Sawyer beats her to it.
You go, Babs!!
Nothing annoys me more than celebrities using a concert to talk to me about politics. I am there to hear music and while I like Barbra Streisand a lot, I would not pay to see her with her ticket prices. A woman with forty years of hits doesnt need to stoop to such ridiculous levels, sing more songs. People didnt pay five hundred dollars to see comedy and I use that term loosely. I am glad she was jeered, she deserved it and I am a democrat. I cant believe sixteen thousand people at Madison Square Garden thought the humor was funny
Streisand has the right to believe anything she wants, but she needs to understand that everyone who paid megabucks to see her don’t necessarily agree with her. It’s never a good policy to alienate your fan base by mocking their very different opinions.
How about an end to musicians charging out the butt for a farewell tour MORE THAN ONCE!!! Cher, The Eagles, Streisand, etc. I thought farewell meant goodbye. They should change the tour name to “The Farewell (until someone decides to pay me/us too much money to charge folks too much money to come see me sing/play/dance to the same songs I’ve had for the past 30 years and on several farewell concert DVDs) Tour.”
Why do people continue to induldge this ego maniac? $1000+ ticket prices? Television interviews & film appearances with the “fuzzy” camera lens, ANOTHER farewell tour? Yes, she has a great voice, hardly an exclusive trait.
I went to the concert and found the skit funny but a little too long. Although the hackler has the right to express himself, he did it in a way that was disrespectful to people like me. The whole incident made me nervous. I was a little bit worried for Streisand and the people around the guy (I don’t think MSG has the best security in the world…)
Have to agree with Jane. If I am shelling out money to attend your concert, please just sing. I am not interested in your political views and resent the fact that you consider me a “Captive Audience Member.”
I feel if the world was perfect and we had the perfect non-corrupted governement, a concert would only be about signing. But since this reality will never be possible, celebreties, like the rest of us normal poor unpopular folks, can speak their minds outloud! All I can say to Babs:
You go the f*** on Girl!
If people don’t respect Streisand’s politics, and they disagree, then stay home — no one is forcing anyone to pay to see it. Just as I wouldn’t pay to see a Toby Keith concert, even if I did like his music, because he infuses his concerts with a right-wing b.s. Translation: we all have choices, so like Babs says, shut the f*** up. (Why doesn’t anyone report the cheering that she was met with?! The audience didn’t sit there in horror.)
It never ceases to amaze me that people want to believe Barbara is not political, even though she’s never made a secret about it. I was at a Madonna concert over the summer, and this couple in front of me was literally shocked that “there are so many gay people here,” and then huffed and puffed when she appeared on the mirrored cross and flipped the finger at George Bush. WAKE UP — YOU”RE AT A MADONNA CONCERT! Did they walk across the street from church and expect a bible study?!
As much as I like Barbra as an artist and might even agree with her political views, I do think it highly inappropriate to use whole segment of a concert as a political platform. A humorous quip here and there maybe, but not a whole drawn out skit, after all it’s not Sat. Night Live !
I agree with much that has been said here. People know full well that Streisand is a loud and proud liberal democrat so OF COURSE she’s going to take the opportunity of being on stage at MSG to make her opinions about Bush known. Why does this surprise anyone? And guess what? We live in America, she’s allowed to do it, end of story! I’m sick of people bashing celebrities who voice political views that disgree with the government, yet have absolutely no problem with the plethora of stars, singers, etc. (cough, Toby Keith!) that praise Bush. Free speech means having it both ways, so all those whiners out there need to lighten up. It also annoys me that the media chose to focus on her use of, GASP, the f bomb, and note on the thousands of people who cheered her for it.
Dave, I could not agree with you more. I am an independant simply because Democrats have become Republicrats and Republicans have become Democricans. It is ridiculous. I’d rather voice my own opinion because I am an American and it is my right.
However I do agree with Babs (even though I am not a fan of her music). G.W. has taken this faux war too far to the point where everyone is screwed- including the people who currently reside in Iraq. However, I am not going to boo people who disagree.
How can you go to a Streisand concert and not know liberal veiws will be expressed? She’s made her politics public for years now. I went to see Green Day expecting anti-Bush remarks and loved every one.
Meshuga!
Having been a Barbra fan for 20 years and some, I am disgusted that the price of her forthcoming convert in London, outprice the real fans. It would be my lifes ambition to see barbra live, but I am out-priced, she would do well to remember who put her where she is!!
