Let’s get it out there: After watching a suddenly viral YouTube clip from The View earlier this week (click here), I’m ready to take bets on the number of days till The Hasselbot gets the boot. This isn’t to say the show shouldn’t have a conservative voice on its panel, but it should have a conservative voice who can hold her own against someone as forceful and self-assured as Rosie O’Donnell. Like her or not, Rosie knows how to argue a point, and she deserves a worthy sparring partner, not one who — backed into a corner in a gun-control debate — starts making the case that grade-school teachers be equipped with firearms. (Seriously? You seriously want to go there, chirpy one?) Rosie’s chiding ”let’s talk instead of yell” remark pretty much confirms she views Hasselbot as little more than the show’s petulant child, and I’m inclined to agree. So, PopWatchers, I ask again: How many days till The Hasselbot gets the boot? And for the love of Lisa Ling, who should they get to replace her?
Elisabeth Hasselbeck, you’re goin’ down!

12 buisiness days Michael, yes, bring back Lisa.
How about Shannen Doherty? She’s a Republican and an opinionated b*tch who deserves to be rescued from crap like “Breaking Up With…”
Any other “conservative voice” ABC might bring in would just ape the same talking points that the Hasselbot does, only in an even more annoying and divisive fashion. It’s Baba Wawa’s job as the reporter to play devil’s advocate when Rosie goes off on too fruity a tangent.
I’m all for a nice young pair of tits on the panel – but preferrably one with half a brain, like Ling.
There aren’t any truly TV friendly smart Republican women. Sorry.
Frankly, I think that Babs will be reluctant to make any more changes until summer, for fear that they come off as dictated by Rosie. I still say the whole thing will implode by January. This show is nothing but loud, shrill hotheads spouting off, no matter what their “view” may be. That Rosie told Elisabeth to not yell was a pot/kettle moment if ever there was one! Unfortunately, for the sake of keeping a balance, I think Shannen Doherty would be the only known conservative that Rosie would tolerate & who would be brave enough to give her a go. For the love of God, no Anne Coulter!!
Yes, let’s bring in Shannen Doherty, because she’s the perfect antidote to a situation where people don’t get along.
Besides, once I point out her hideously crooked eyeballs, you’ll never want to look at Shannen Doherty again.
Oops…
I agree with the above statement wholeheartedly: “There aren’t any truly TV friendly smart Republican women. Sorry.”
However, I would love to see Ann Coulter (whom I despise) on The View and would love to see Rosie tear her hateful butt apart.
Elisabeth, even though she isn’t the greatest speaker, is actually correct. I would rather have someone who is correct than one who is incorrect but sounds sincere. The man in the Amish tragedy had no prior convictions that would have prevented him from registering and getting a gun even under stricter gun laws. Only the government and criminals would have guns if they were banned altogether.
Elisabeth is NO replacement for Lisa Ling.
Personally this show lost me when Meredith left, but, still I find myself TiVO’ing it anyways. I like Rosie a LOT more than I thought I would, but, Hasselback is ANNOYING. She is self-righteous, borders on being a bigot/homophobe, and acts like a spoiled brat.
Get rid of her PRONTO!!
Rosie should be the one getting the boot. She is a loud mouthed bully. Why is everyone against Elizabeth just because she isn’t afraid to have an opinion?
Gun control and a ban on guns are two completely different things. And a psych evaluation could probably have pointed out there was something wrong with the man in PA and prevented him from obtaining a gun. There had to have been some sign that there was something wrong with him before he did this. I don’t buy that he was perfectly normal one day and then just snapped. It never happens that way.
Could we care any less about “The View”?
A show where a former stand-up comedian, a former reality show contestant, a former talk-show host, and an ABC reporter sit around a table and see who can one-up each other? If you honestly care about whether Hasselback stays or goes, here’s a tip:
Get a hobby, or volunteer for a charity or something.
Whenever, it won’t be soon enough. Take your rebulican survior 18 mins of fame and don’t let the door hit you in the a%@. They need RuPaul.
If someone wants a gun, he can get a gun no matter what law is in the books. I don’t use illegal drugs, but I bet I could buy some within the day if I wanted to. The problem is our violent culture, not the amount of guns. Canada is very free with guns, and yet many people don’t even lock their doors. Criminals and unstable people will not follow the law like good citizens will.
Remember when the View had to can Debbie Matenopoulos because she was having too many blond moments? Then they hired the adorably out of place Lisa Ling (she wasn’t catty enough to get a word in edgewise). Then they hire a Matenopoulos/Survivor edition in the form of Hasselbeck. Why do producers not learn that young and nubile does not always make for compelling TV? If 30 Rock doesn’t make it, bring in Tina Fey.
Elizabeth gets lots in her idealistic republican views. She has good intentions, but lacks a bigger perspective on issues.
But really, the question is: what is up with the NRA in your country??? Who decided to put them in charge? It is truly ridiculous that such a group gets any respect at all!
I think Elisabeth Hasselbeck does a fine job. She has to speak fast or else she’ll get interrupted by those around her. As for Rosie O’Donnel, she cannot debate eloquently. Rather, she uses her bravado, bulk and overbearing sense of command to intimidate others rather than providing substance to her DNC-approved talking points. Ann Coulter would wipe the floor with her.
Ann Coulter would slaughter O’Donnell and use the leftover blubber for the oil lamps in Japanese fishing villages. Seriously, Coulter would tear that crappy little panel to bits. Smart, mean and quick always beats stupid, loud, obnoxious, and ill-informed.
Theo — yes! I’ve been distracted by Doherty’s crooked eyes and the sort of half-turn she does on her head to mask it since 90210 days. She’s got a whole Quasimoto thing going on. I thought I was the only one.
She’s not “young” but the only person that came to mind to intelligently provide a republican viewpoint is Mary Matalin. I’m a dem, but I actually could respect her opinion. Elisabeth is a nice girl, I am sure, but it is hard to listen to her cause she gets all screechy and breathless when arguing a point. Even if she has something intelligent to say, she comes off like a petulant teenager.
The woman has a point. You can be against her, but it is a legitimate point, prompted by a tragedy we need to do our best to try to stop in the future. Mr. Slezak is a liberal bigot. He does not analyze a point of view, he just attacks the person holding the view because he or she is from the other side of the political spectrum. They want to drive people like Elizabeth out of national television or, worse, the public sphere. And that it the opposite of democracy and the definition of Fascism. He did the same with Mandisa, don’t you remember.
I think they should get the Calista Flockheart character from the Brothers & Sisters show. It would be meta.
I could care less about this show (or either political side), but anyone propogating the notion that Anne Coulter would decimate Rosie (or any other liberal) has on political blinders. Coulter cites no reliable evidence in any of her arguments, instead choosing to grandstand to convey her views. Surely there must be a reliable conservative to offer up besides the too hot on herself Coulter.
“Mr. Slezak is a liberal bigot. He does not analyze a point of view, he just attacks the person holding the view because he or she is from the other side of the political spectrum.”
^I hope the irony of this statement is not lost on you.
I wish that people would stop blindly defending someone solely based on their political views. Doesn’t the conservative view deserve someone who can argue a legitimate point effectively and not just dissolve into tears or start yelling like a child.
Ann Coulter would go Dresden on the entire cast without even breaking a sweat. But if you’re craving someone else with a conservative viewpoint (someone who invariably backs up her arguments with meticulous facts and research) how about Michelle Malkin? She would also leave Rosie a quivering heap of opinionated-but-tragically-uninformed blubber.
Who cares? It’s the freaking View. Are we really that starved for political debate in this country? There are 8 million channels that contain nothing more than loud conservatives arguing endlessly with loud liberals. Do we really need a conservative counterweight (no pun intended) for Rosie freaking O’Donnell?
(Same logic holds for EW, by the way. Even though I suspect I personally agree with Ken Tucker’s political views 100%, it makes me want to cancel my subscription every time I read one of his crafty little asides in the middle of a TV review).
Let’s face it: Hassellbot is simply a twentysomething whiny idiot with no backbone. Love or hate Ann Coulter, she doesn’t care whether you like her or not; she’ll get her opinions out there one way or another and not get a nervous breakdown if you disagree with her. Hassellbot needs to stop being a Republican crybaby and grow the hell, I mean the heck up. Otherwise step aside and let some other twentsomething take over.
Eh, both Elisabeth and Rosie got their points across. Elisabeth had a statistic and facts to back up her opinion, as did Rosie. Part of the reason Rosie is able to get her point across so well is because she has lots of experience in public speaking. She’s got years on Elisabeth.
Maybe the fifth chair will be filled by a conservative, Fox News anchor.
I love how Rosie makes her blanket statements about gun control. Here is poor Elisabeth trying to make a justified point and she has to squeeze it in between Rosie’s belittling comments. The reason why Rosie is hard to debate with on the View is because she has all ready been handed the position of power, the playing field is off from the beginning. She leads off with the story and just continues to make her agenda part of the issue. School shootings=Gun control. White males=school shooting pervs. In order for the show to have a real debate it cannot be dominated by one side from the get-go. I hate that Rosie gets paid to spread her liberal lies around the land. Frankly, when it comes down to defending my life and my family–even though I live in a tiny, quiet, Midwest town–from an attacker with a gun or other weapon, my words will mean nothing. . . my gun and training will mean everything.
