Trailer Blazer: 'Death of a President'

9230__bush_lDeath of a President (Oct. 27) No matter your political stance, it’s likely you’ll feel a tad unsettled after watching the trailer for this documentary-style take on the fictionalized assassination of President Bush, which took home the international critics’ prize at the recent Toronto Film Festival. The way director Gabriel Range melds news clips with footage of actors playing bystanders to the event certainly looks compelling, but unless this one starts looking like an Oscar contender, I might wuss out and spend my fall entertainment dollars on something a little less harrowing. How about you, PopWatchers?

I’m sure that there are some people who would like to see George Bush dead, parents and family members of war victims; but there is something wrong when a movie “plots” the death of a president. Especially when it comes from Canada.

The attention to this movie reminds me of the publicity around much of Steven Bochco’s TV work–lots of hype about the premise and the “shocking first few minutes” but little to offer after that. (I’m not referring to NYPD Blue but to misfires like “Public Morals” and his CBS show that played up a graphic head wound in the pilot.) This movie seems all sizzle, no steak–it’s “Snakes on a Plane” for people who refer to movies as “cinema.”

Ed, the film is English, not Canadian.

Excuse me Ed but this movie did not come from Canada.
It is a British film. It premiered at the Toronto Film Festival. But what can I expect from someone who doesnt know anything outide his own state let alone his own country. Its a movie people. No one wants to see a president assissinated but it is fiction. If you have a problem with Canada thats too bad. This is why the United States has a bad reputation around the world.

I’m with you, Michael. The assassination is crossing a line. I’ll get my anti-Bush jollies by watching the Daily Show.

If the Brits want to make a movie about a faux assassination, how about Paris Hilton? Call it DEATH OF A MEDIA WHORE?

From the reviews I’ve read on this film, I sort of get what the director is trying to do (It doesn’t promote actually killing the president. It’s more about how since 9/11 we in the US tend to overreact to every perceived threat.), but it sounds as if the director’s not exactly successful. If I decide to see it, I’ll probably wait to rent it on dvd.

I’m pretty sure that Karl Rove could talk Dubya into taking a slug or two if it meant getting a few more percentage points in Ohio and Florida.

I think Bush is a great president, of course, I make well over three hundred thousand dollars a year, not including my investments, so it makes sense for me to support him. I have no idea why the middle and lower class support him, but thanks.

  • Dave

I’m not sure how cutting taxes and increasing spending, which has led to a massive deficit and increases in the national debt, makes him a great president. And the only reason people in the middle and lower class support him, because he certainly doesn’t help them economically, is that he shares their so-called “values.” As for this movie, I find the subject matter and timing of it’s release a bit unsettling, but that’s the price we pay for free speech. If people are offended by it, there’s a simple solution: don’t see it.
