Mel Hits the Road Again

95510__mel_lClear the thoroughfares, hide the liquor and the Hebrews. The Mel Gibson Roadshow may be coming to your town — if your town plays host to either a) a slightly off-grid film festival or b) a Native American casino. True to form, the actor-turned-
culture-warrior is taking a working print of his latest opus, the Mayan eschatology seminar Apocalypto, straight to the people — and throwing in a little controversy to spice things up. Because God knows, Mel’s publicity ain’t spicy enough already.

But hold on, it’s not the controversy you’re thinking of. Mel didn’t do a dramatic reading of The Protocols of the Elders of Zion with a spooky flashlight under his chin. He’s got a brand new bag: Opposing the Iraq War. Addressing the audience at Fantastic Fest, in Austin, Texas, regarding the human sacrifice angle of Apocalypto, he said, ”What’s human sacrifice, if not sending guys off to Iraq for no reason?” There’s a powerful message here: Mel Gibson hates war at least as much as he hates Jews.

Even though Mel is clearly peddling Apocalypto to Native Americans by screening it in their casinos, don’t think he’s forgotten about his evangelical base. The thrust of his Fantastic Fest address was that Apocalypto was about End Times and a degenerate society in decline — just like ours, he suggested. The brimstone’s still there, don’t you worry.

Oh, and I almost forgot: The movie got a partial standing ovation. Wouldn’t it be easier if it just sucked outright? Too bad we live in a complicated world, where crazy, even despicable people often make really interesting art. But for the hardened anti-Melites out there, how good would the buzz have to be to make you see this thing?

So I’m guessing Scott Brown is Jewish? And anti-Mel? And anti-Apocolypto?
EW writers have become so hateful lately. Time to lighten up.

Well, as an ancient Mel-avoider (I got tired of the homoerotic, hyperviolent martyr complex at Braveheart – yick), I would actually have to have someone prescreen the film for me and give me a gore-o-meter rating. There’s not a chance in hell that I would go see a Mel Gibson film right off the street.
    Hide the Hebrews – priceless!

  • jon

I think Scott is ‘anti-People Who Scream Their Racist Thoughts About Jews While Drunk,’ as we all should be. Just because he’s Mel Gibson, doesn’t mean he gets a free racism pass.

  • L A Lawson

As far as Mel’s drunken comments go…who hasn’t said something stupid when they are drunk. Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.

  • Stephanie Travitsky

Mel Gibbson is getting freaky with “Powder”? When did this happen?

  • john

“crazy, even despicable,” are two adjectives that do not apply to Mel Gibson. No way, no how. He’s been acting stupid lately, but scott brown’s gotta lighten up on Popwatch, at least.

  • JNB

    You go Mel!!Still love you!

  • mike

Yes, Mel. If you’re going to start an anti-war campaign, starting here in Texas is a great idea.

Woah. First three GOP Senators pull an “in your face” and tell Bush they oppose him on Tribunals, Now Mel Gibson’s going out and speaking out against the war? What’s next? Charlton Heston’s going to start speaking up for the environment?

  • Stephanie Travitsky

Charleton Heston speaking up on the enviroment is making me think about when he was in “Soylent Green”.
Actors should not say one thing and then change their viewpoints. Gibson is a decent actor, but other than that he is just a blubbering ignoramous.

Next time I get pulled over, I’m going to start ranting that American expats raised in Australia who make films in obscure foreign languages are the cause of all the world’s problems. We’ll see what happens then.

  • AL

The only thing more pathetic to Mel trying to capitalize on the big anti-war bandwagon is those of you out there who don’t understand that the man is truly, hatefully Anti-Semetic. Next time you call the EW writers HATERS, you should really look at Mel, and maybe at yourself. (and especially those of you asking if Scott is Jewish – that’s like Mel asked the cop who stopped him if he was Jewish!)

  • Aaron

It’s not THAT hard to separate the art from the artist, is it? I think Apocalypto looks like a fascinating piece of cinema. How DOES a succesfully self-sustaining culture suddenly implode? I’ll be there opening day to find out.

  • Alexei

Hey L A Lawson, I’ve never said anything stupid while drunk so can I still hate on Mel for his ridiculous and despicable rant?

  • helga

Mel acting stupid? well the americans have a president””who has been acting stupid lately and is still at it, relly makes you wanna say stupid things drunk and not. Think about that.
